RARE IMPERIAL DAMASCUS ARTILLERY SWORD.

Lot # 1780 (Sale Order: 812 of 904)

This is sometimes referred to a "Grosser" type sword because of the size of the hilt. This is a Lion's head sword with red glass eyes, a massive Lion's head & the back strap along with the "P" guard are heavily ornate. The obverse of the languet has crossed cannons, identifying this as being worn by an artillery Officer. The reverse languet has a coat of arms, which we have not identified & also has a distinctive bend in towards the blade. The hilt has a shark skin handle, which is sound & intact with a triple brass grip wire. This is a select offering as the blade is a true damascus with a combination of gilted panels & a maiden head damascus pattern. The blade itself has some darkening but overall is in very sound condition. The paneling is very detailed with a quote, which we have roughly translated to mean "For honor and duty until the heart and sword break". The gilting is better than 50% intact. The reverse of the blade is also heavily engraved with separate panels & marked "Eisenhauer Damast-Sthal". This indicates that the blade is indeed Damascus steel. The back strap of the blade identifies the distributor as Eduard Kuhne, Erfurt. Missing the scabbard but does have a high grade original Imperial officer's gold knot. CONDITION: overall very good for what is there. (02-6622/BS). $1500-2500....more
