RARE AND DESIRABLE WW2 JAPANESE TYPE 5 SEMI-

Lot # 1155 (Sale Order: 158 of 696)

AUTO MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 7.7 Japanese. S# 161. This very rare firearm was an attempt by the Japanese Navy to develop a semi-automatic military rifle. Records are very sc...morearce but according to information in the book Military Rifles of Japan by Honeycutt this was probably solely a Navy development as the rifles are thought to have been produced at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal however definitive records are not available to substantiate this. The Japanese Army and Navy were not noted for inter-service cooperation and independently developed their own equipment. There were efforts before World War II to develop a semi-auto rifle based on the US Pedersen rifle, the Czech ZH-29 and domestic designs. The type 5 seems to be an attempt to adapt the design of the US Garand for Japanese use. Making the Garand clip work with the 7.7 Japanese cartridge was a major stumbling block. The solution was to modify the design for the use of standard 5 round stripper clips which also gave a magazine capacity of 10 rounds. The rear sight is a tangent type graduated to 1,200 meters and is windage adjustable. The aperture on this sight is very small making it difficult to use. The front sight is the standard inverted V with open protective ears. The 23 1/8" barrel carries the S# on the bottom of the chamber. The assembly number 17 is found on the flat underneath the chamber, the bolt, magazine follower and front face of the trigger housing inside the mag. well. The major features of the rifle are similar to the M1 Garand including the gas cylinder assembly, operating rod and trigger group. The magazine well is extended downward to accommodate the extra 2 rounds. Hardwood stock set has the typical Japanese features including a side sling, grasping grooves, detachable tangs and the 2 piece buttstock construction with cup type buttplate. Reproduction brown leather sling with Japanese characters in white. CONDITION: stock set has brown stain finish with glossy appearance and wear, dents and scratches throughout. Right side of buttstock has notable deep dent over magazine well plus notable denting at grasping grooves. Rear hand guard has large abrasion with missing chips on top right. Metal has 60% original black finish with thinning wear and handling marks throughout. Conventionally rifled bore has strong lands with hint of darkness in grooves. PROVANANCE: From the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-4944/RW). CURIO. $25,000-40,000.

EXTREMELY RARE NORTH AMERICAN 1911 SEMI AUTO

Lot # 1165 (Sale Order: 168 of 696)

PISTOL. S# 6. Cal. 45 ACP. North American Arms of Quebec, Canada was awarded a contract with the US Ordnance Department to produce 500,000 model 1911 pistols for the US m...moreilitary during WWI on July 1, 1918. The pistols were to be manufactured in the former Ross Rifle factory that was leased by North American Arms Company for an 18-month period starting September 1, 1918. The US agreed to provide raw materials for the production of the pistols to North American Arms. The expectation set forth by the contract was to deduct the expense for raw materials from the invoices of the completed pistols. The US also contracted with North American to produce spare parts for the pistols. There was concern from the Ordnance Departments engineers regarding the capabilities of the company to produce the quite complicated pistol due to the rather dated methods and machinery utilized by the Canadian manufacturing plant. These complications proved to be a rather difficult hurdle for the company, and the requirement set forth for 100% interchangeability of the pistols’ parts with other manufacturers products, was one that the company was never able to achieve. On Dec. 4, 1918, the contract for North American Arms to produce the pistols was suspended, ending the production of the pistols before any deliveries were made. There were only about 100 pistols that were completed during the time that the company was tooling up for production or, as some believe, from parts that the company competed that the firm assembled after the contract was suspended. When the cancelled contract was settled between the US government and North American Arms, a small amount of partially finished parts was reclaimed by the Ordnance Salvage Board and later destroyed. As Charles Clawson states in his publication, “Colt .45 Service Pistols – Models of 1911 and 1911A1” pg. 204, “The pistols are a bit crude, showing some hand fitting, but are good functioning weapons” There are some distinct differences between a pre-production toolroom North American pistol and a production Colt 1911. The North American pistols, such as this example, have a wide, long spur uncheckered hammer, an ejection port cut out that terminates on the flat facet of the slide, a “rounded” barrel bushing, and a serial/assembly number that is found on the slide, frame, & trigger. North American pistols were also produced with a main spring housing that has no provisions for a lanyard loop; however, this example has a Colt main spring housing that has a provision for a lanyard ring. The barrel is unmarked. Consignor notes that some Colt parts were possibly used by North American to finish pistols. These pistols were never submitted for inspection and carry no proof markings. The pistol is fitted with 13-line, double diamond walnut grips. The slide stop is serrated and the safety lock is checkered. MAGS: (1) unmarked, two tone 7 rd. CONDITION: Metal surfaces exhibit a coarse polish with a “black army” type, blued finish that has wear located in carry and holster rub locations. The bare metal shows little to no signs of oxidation which is rather remarkable given the age of this pistol. As Clawson notated in his book, the fit between the slide and the frame of this example shows a hand fit or cruder tolerance level than one would find on Colt or other 1911 production-run pistol. Grips are very good with some relatively minor handling marks. Very good bore that shows some light frosting. Mechanically fine; however, on occasion, the magazine requires some additional pressure to properly lock in. (23-2627/ZAL). CURIO. $90,000-110,000.

COLT 1905, BRITISH MILITARY MODEL, RETAILER

Lot # 1166 (Sale Order: 169 of 696)

MARKED. Cal. 45 ACP. S# 3454. Bbl 4 7/8". Colt made approximately 6,200 Model 1905 pistols, of those, approximately 400 were shipped to Britain, the majority with a short...moreened left grip panel over a factory installed lanyard loop. This example, a mid-production gun with a round hammer, was manufactured with the usual Colt legend on the left side of the slide suffixed by the encircled Rampant Colt. The right side of the slide is marked with the caliber reference. The full serial number was applied to the left side of the frame along with Colt's inspection marking on the left upper trigger guard web. Upon receipt by Britain, the gun was proofed with a small Crown/V on the left side of the slide and frame in addition to the exposed chamber area. The British retailer "WILKINSON/ PALL MALL, LONDON, S.W." was inscribed on the top of the slide and an inventory number "2265" was hand inscribed to the underside of the trigger guard. At some point the gun must have made its way to the Canadian military as reflected by the partially encircled broad arrow that now appears to the left of the slide release. It is not known when the ownership "R.R. SPARLING" was marked on the left side of the slide. Fitted with original checkered panels, each secured by two screws. No magazine. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: factory letter indicating that this example was 1 of 10 shipped to Colt's Pall Mall London Agency on November 28th of 1908. Factory letter lists "Furnished with a lanyard swivel" under "Special Features:". CONDITION: approximately G-VG as period reworked, a portion of the left side of the slide address is thin, the reapplied blue having overlapped a portion of the hammer case hardening. The retailer markings, Canadian military stamp, and ownership markings are very sharp with proud metal. VG+ original grips with oil darkening and blunted checkering. No discernible cracks. Slightly dull bore with easily discernible rifling. Correct manual mechanics with consideration given to missing magazine. (23-4784/LA). CURIO. $4,000-6,000. w/ letter (featured in The Colt Model 1905 by Potocki pg 102)
