MILITARY M901 TRACKED ARMORED VEHICLE.

Lot # 1025 (Sale Order: 26 of 696)

UPDATED DESCRIPTION - This majestic armored vehicle was once on display at the Alabama Center of Military History. After its period of utilization expired it was sold w/ ...morea clean bill of sale & we have copies all related documentation. The M901 came into service in the United States in 1979, seeing significant use in both the Persian Gulf War and Iraq War. It's design is based on the M113 Armored Personal Carrier chassis and designed to carry a dual M220 TOW Missile Launcher, nicknamed "The Hammerhead" due to the aesthetics of the unique turret. Operated with a crew of 4 (squad leader, gunner, loader, driver) this 12 ton machine measures almost 16’ in length & just under 9’ wide with a height of almost 10’ w/ targeting head stowed. It has a range of 300 miles with a top speed of 38 mph. It is armored with 1.5” on the front and 1.75” on the sides. A primary asset of the M901 is its mobility. Its speed, range and power to weight ratio is equivalent to modern tracked vehicles and it is amphibious without special preparation. It can be transported with a full loadout by the C-130 Hercules, or the C-27 Spartan. Due to its upgraded suspension it can also be air-dropped, or rolled off directly into battle. The speed of the firing system, as well as its land speed, is also an asset. When it takes a firing position, it can raise up, acquire the target and engage within 20 seconds. The launcher must be lowered to reload, but can still accomplish that task, and be back to firing in only 40 seconds. It can also carry a 7.62mm GPMG, usually an M60 or M240, as defense against aircraft and personnel. The ammo loadout capacity is 10 TOW Missiles and 2,000 rounds of 7.62 NATO, not including that already loaded and ready. It is powered by a GM Diesel engine producing between 220 & 275 horsepower and able to maneuver on a 60% gradient & 30% side slope. Each side contains 5 road wheels, an idler and drive sprocket. CONDITION: exterior finish painted green, black and brown camoflauge. Tracks utilize rubber pads between lugs to minimize hard surface damage. Overall condition appears to be very good and runs well according to consigner. (02-19442/JZ). $80,000-95,000.

SCARCE VICKERS PEDERSEN SEMI-AUTO MILITARY RIFLE.

Lot # 1026 (Sale Order: 27 of 696)

Cal. 276 Pedersen. S# 45. Bbl. 24". Aperture rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation. Blade front sight. Receiver marked on left side "PEDERSEN SELFLOADER PA VICK...moreERS-ARMSTRONGS. LPD". Receiver ring is marked on top with partial "02" in an oval. Bolt head has what appears to be a partial recumbent lion. This rifle was manufactured in England after Vickers-Armstrong had tooled up with the assistance of John Pedersen. Vickers had been watching the trials of these rifles in the U.S. and felt the U.S. was close to adopting the design. Vickers wanted to be in a position to promote and sell these rifles in Britain and other countries. The design is considered a hesitation blow back and does not rely on gas or recoil to function. It does however utilize a lubricated cartridge which was not looked upon with great favor by ordnance officers as they felt the wax could attract dirt and cause malfunctions. Loading is accomplished by a 10 rd. en-bloc similar to the Garand design. Unmarked walnut stock with pistol grip, grasping grooves and ventilation openings in the bottom of the forend. Stock has standard sling swivels. Upper band mounts a bayonet lug and stacking swivel. Stamped, cup type buttplate w/ impressed checkering. Sheet metal upper handguard with ventilating holes. Tan leather US type 1907 sling marked "B.T. & B. COS". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: includes sealed box of 20 cartridges in tan box with red band markings include "BALL CALIBER 276" and "FRANKFORT ARSENAL 1929". Box is in good condition with light wear and loose staple on one in flap. CONDITION: stock has light wear and scattered handling marks throughout with arsenal rework type finish. Wrist has extensive crack with doweled repair. Buttstock has several fine cracks visible on both sides which show gluing in the lightning holes when buttplate is removed. Notable large dent on left side over magazine well and dents on right side below grasping groove. Metal retains 75% thinning blued finish with wear and scattered handling marks. Magazine has added cold blue. Windage knob has small missing segment. Bore has well worn rifling with hint of darkening in grooves. PROVANANCE: from the Estate Collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-4918/RW). CURIO. $8,000-14,000.

EXTREMELY SCARCE AND DESIRABLE WWI REMINGTON

Lot # 1027 (Sale Order: 28 of 696)

MODEL 1918 MKI PEDERSEN DEVICE WITH 2 BOXES OF ORIGINAL CARTRIDGES. Cal. 30 Pedersen. S# 12892. Bbl. 3 9/16". The device has an overall length of 12 1/2". Slide is marked...more on top right "REMINGTON - BRIDGEPORT / PEDERSEN'S PAT'S. PENDING". Marked on left side, oriented to be read from the right "U.S.A. 1918 - MARK I 12892" (S#). The device has no visible inspectors’ marks. Commonly referred to as the "Pedersen Device" the official nomenclature was "U.S. Automatic Pistol, Cal. .30, Model of 1918". The pistol terminology was adopted in order to maintain secrecy as it was hoped to use a large number of these devices in the planned spring offensive of 1919 which did not take place due to the Armistice in Nov. 1918. The device was designed by John D. Pedersen, a well-known firearms designer affiliated w/ Remington Arms Company. The concept of greater firepower in the hands of the infantry using the standard bolt action service rifle in a fast-firing semi-auto mode was appealing to the ordnance department & also met the approval of General Pershing who commanded the American forces in France. The device which showed much promise and was taken to France and tested. It greatly impressed General Pershing who recommended its adoption and initial purchase of 100,000 of the devices. The hope was the additional firepower would help break the deadlock in trench warfare. There were additional plans to adopt modified devices for the Model 1917 rifle and the Russian Mosin Nagant. The modified 1903 Springfield rifle which accepted the device was called "U.S. Rifle, Cal. .30, Model of 1903 Mark I. In order to provide the increased level of firepower the device used a pistol sized cartridge and allowed for the use of a standard service rifle with the added ability to quickly change back to full powered ammunition when the need arose. This change was easily accomplished by the soldier in the field who simply removed the service bolt and placed it in the issue canvas carrying case. He then took the device from its metal carrying case and inserted it into the rifle, locking it in place by pushing down the magazine cutoff. A 40-rd. mag. was inserted in the device to complete the change. When needed the process was easily reversed. The devices were produced after WWI until 1920 w/ approx. 65,000 completed. Additional 1903 Mark I rifles were made until the late 20s when production ceased. After a number of service tests interest in the devices waned & the majority of them were destroyed by burning in 1931 leaving a few intact examples & some devices assembled from parts salvaged from destruction. MAGS: 1 – 40 rd. marked "TP" and is provided w/ numbered viewing slots facing the firer to account for the number of cartridges remaining. Mag. is in good condition retaining most of its original finish however the feed lip on the left side is bent inward notably more than the right side. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original unmarked steel carrying case w/ hinged lid and belt hook. Case has light wear retaining a large degree of original dark green parkerization. 2 original 40 rd. boxes of .30 auto pistol ball cartridges. The tan boxes are marked on top "40-CAL. 30 AUTO. PISTOL BALL CARTRIDGES / MODEL OF 1918 / THE REMNGTON ARMS UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY, INC. / BRIDGEPORT, CONN.". Cartridges are head stamped "RA H 19" indicating that although the boxes are labeled Bridgeport, Conn. the cartridges were loaded at the Hoboken, N.J. Ammunition Plant. Boxes have wear sm. tears & light staining. One has taped reinforcement. Ammunition has spots of oxidation but generally good appearance. Also included are 2 reproduction combination wrenches. Wrenches are marked "U.S.A. MARK I REMINGTON – BRIDGEPORT". Lightly worn wrenches w/ gray phosphate type finish. Leatherette padded carrying case. CONDITION: device has been restored w/ 80% of its lightly worn arsenal rework type parkerized finish remaining. Slide has black finish. The forward portion of the device resembles an empty cartridge case & has shallow rifling. PROVANANCE: from the Estate Collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-2224/RW). CURIO $7,000-10,000.

VERY NICE EXAMPLE OF AN ORIGINAL U.S. SPRINGFIELD

Lot # 1028 (Sale Order: 29 of 696)

M1 GARAND GAS TRAP SEMI-AUTO MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 23656. Bbl. 24". Correct flush nut rear sight with Battle Range Elevation knob and early non ribbed sight cove...morer with drawing number. Blade front sight with protective ears and marked with "B 8882-0". The M1 Garand rifle had a long and involved development period which included competition with the Pedersen and Johnson rifles. The Ordnance department decided as early as WWI that a semi-automatic infantry rifle would give the soldiers a great advantage in fire power but this could not be at the expense of accuracy and reliability. Many designs were tested from both the U.S. and foreign nations. The design which came closest to meeting this ideal was designed by John C. Garand, a civilian employee at Springfield Armory who was an extremely talented firearms designer. The M1 Garand rifle was standardized in Jan., 1936 and the first production models had a gas system which used an external trap at the muzzle to capture the expanding gases needed to operate the rifle. The number of these rifles which are called the "Gas Trap Garand" by collectors was relatively small as problems developed with this system including the difficulty in keeping them clean. The solution to the problem was a gas port drilled directly into the bore of the rifle. According to author Bruce Canfield approximately 48,100 of these rifles were produced. Many were issued and sent as far afield as the Philippines and many were up graded and converted to "Gas Port Rifles" over time and most of the remainder destroyed in 1947. This makes the Gas Trap Garand a very scarce and desirable collector's piece. This rifle with a correct type vintage replacement stock is otherwise an unaltered specimen and although it retains little of its original metal finish it has a pleasing appearance. The barrel is marked on the right side with a "P" proof. Throat gauges 1.0. Muzzle not gauged due to gas trap. The bolt has the drawing number "D28287" and an additional "J6". The forward right side of the receiver is marked below the stock line "D28281-1". The unmarked operating rod without letter code has the vertical cut. The follower rod has the short fork with the "square" spring and is also fitted with the compensating spring. Gas trap is made without flutes and is numbered "5" at rear and "0" at forward end. Trigger housing is marked on left side "D28290" and has the large pad. Hammer is numbered "C46008-1". Safety marked "C46016-4" and the milled trigger guard has "C46025". Walnut stock set. Buttstock is correct type with the checkered buttplate without trap. Stock appears to be early replacement likely by a unit armorer as it is unmarked. Stock fittings including ferrules and bands are correct early types. Model 1907 tan leather sling is unmarked and has wear plus flexing. CONDITION: stock set has very good appearance with light wear and scattered small handling marks. Metal retains traces of its worn original finish and is turning overall gray with scattered small handling marks. Bore has degree of shine and sharp lands but slight darkening in the grooves. PROVANANCE: from the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-4943/RW). CURIO. $20,000-30,000.

EXPERIMENTAL 22-06 SEMI-AUTO M1 GARAND RIFLE. Cal. 22-06 Single. S# 5342851. Bbl. 24". This unique and high condition rifle was converted at Springfield Armory to test th...moree concept of a high velocity small caliber cartridge as being more lethal than the standard issue 30 caliber cartridges. The rifles were converted from standard service model by fitting them with a newly manufactured barrel. These barrels were marked "SINGLE, DUPLEX AND TRIPLEX" according to the load they were designed for. The single bullet load was supposed to propel a 50 grain bullet at 3500 fps. This rifle for the single bullet load appears to have been unissued at the time it was rebarreled. According to "The M1 Garand Rifle" by Bruce Canfield the serial numbers should be in the 6,000,000 range however this example S342851 manufactured in 1954 is 657149 units previous. The .22 caliber barrel is marked on the right side "SA F38536 8142 4344 9 58 T B " "CAL 22-06 SINGLE 1-12 " & DOD proof. Bolt is marked "6528287-SA A13". Late type aperture rear sight. U.S. 1901 SPRINGFIELD MARKED "LT TOWNSEND WHELEN"

Lot # 1030 (Sale Order: 31 of 696)

BOLT ACTION CARBINE. Cal. 30-03. S# 11. This unique 1903 carbine was assembled from a Model 1901 Springfield receiver. The receiver retains its original S# 11 and the 190...more1 date. The other markings on the receiver ring have been removed by the milling of very shallow transverse grooves and markings in these grooves are " LT. / TOWNSEND WHELEN / 30-03 /". Receiver marked on bottom behind recoil lug "4". Col. Townsend Whelen was a very famous firearms authority, author, hunter and soldier. Col. Whelen started his military career as an enlisted man. He was promoted to 2nd lieutenant of Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Spanish American War. Desiring a military career he obtained help from President Theodore Roosevelt to take the examination in 1902 as a regular Army 2nd Lieutenant and was promoted from there doing duty as both a line and staff officer. He was ordered to duty at Springfield Armory in the Fall of 1929. While there he had a hand in the development of the 22 Hornet cartridge. In the book, "Mr. Rifleman" by Angier and Whelen, Col. Whelen stated, "we took three .22 Springfield's, fitted them with centerfire bolts and proper sized extractors and made a chambering reamer and rechambered them for Wotkyns cartridge which I called the Hornet." At a later point in the book, he states regarding a custom 30-06 rifle built by Griffin & Howe, "I had this rifle built about 1930 for my cousin, William B. Whelen of Philadelphia. I was at that time stationed at Springfield Armory. I first sent the breech action complete, in the bright, before it was heat treated, to Griffin & Howe and had them engrave it, and then return it to me. The high-numbered receiver and bolt are of nickel steel. I then had the receiver and bolt heat treated at Springfield Armory, and fitted with a new star-gauged .30-06 barrel." This seems to establish the fact that a certain amount of private work was completed at Springfield Armory for the officers serving there at their own expense. The possibility exists that this rifle was also assembled at Springfield using surplus parts. Author Bruce Canfield has stated in his book," '03 Springfield Service Rifle", that there are even today a very small number of Model 1901 receivers in existence which would allow the assembly of a custom-made rifle of this type. Rear sight appears to be modified from an 1898 Krag sight. The rear of the sight is modified to remove side notches. Sight is graduated to 2,000 yards. Banded blade front sight. Blade is mounted on a Krag style post. Sight blade and base are secured by pins. Post marked on right side w/ "10T" which indicates the rifling pitch of the 22 3/16" barrel. The barrel has a distinctive step in front of the receiver ring. Marked "P" underneath chamber area. Bright bolt with straight down handle. Bolt handle has punch proof underneath. Safety lug is marked underneath "C". Bolt has single gas hole at forward end. Extractor has gas hole. Safety is unmarked and finished in case colors. Cut off is unmarked and the wing has faint case colors. Smooth narrow trigger. The milled trigger guard marked on left rear of bow with inverted "4" and "flaming bomb". Floorplate is notably more polished than balance of trigger guard. Walnut stock and handguard. The buttstock is marked with "B" behind trigger guard and tiny initials "GDM" behind sling swivel at toe. The straight grip stock has grasping grooves, small pin type reinforcing bolts and rounded cutoff recess. Forend has a very nicely done walnut filler to close the lightning cut. Smooth trap buttplate with curved toe. Forend has solid Krag type band. Handguard appears to be from Krag rifle and is notably darker than buttstock. Krag type brown leather military sling w/ single brass hook. Sling is marked "Rock Island Arsenal WTG". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: nickel plated oiler in butt. Krag type brass muzzle cover and sight protector. CONDITION: stock set has a very good attractive finish with a small number of scattered scratches and handling marks. The hand guard has a fine 2" crack on the top left rear. The receiver retains a large degree of a mottled blue gray case hardening. The marking surfaces on the receiver ring were originally bright but are now turning gray. The markings are hand stamped, and the "W" in Whelen is a different font. Bright bolt is turning gray w/ spots of peppery oxidation. Barrel and front sight retain a large degree of original blue with very light wear. Bore has darkening in grooves and lightly worn lands. PROVANANCE STATEMENT: From the Estate Collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1254/RW). CURIO. $10,000-20,000.

RARE HIGH CONDITION U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1903

Lot # 1032 (Sale Order: 33 of 696)

BUSHMASTER RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 78748. Bbl. 18" with ladder rear sight graduated to 2850 yards. Blade front sight. Sight has issue protective hood marked on the left sid...moree with a circle "P". Bbl. is unmarked. Receiver has Rock Island Arsenal markings and the S# indicates a manufacture date of 1907. Replacement bolt with swept handle marked "BF" and "4". These rifles were modified by the ordnance shop in the Panama Canal Zone for use by the 158th infantry of the Oklahoma National Guard who needed a shorter handier rifle to cope with the jungles in Panama. Approximately 4,700 Model 1903 rifles were shortened 6" for use by the jungle security platoon while training in the heavy jungle foliage. Major General Robert H. Lewis, commanding the Panama Mobile Force command, obtained permission to make this alteration from Army Chief of Ordnance with the work being done at the ordnance shops at Couozal Canal Zone. The rifles were nicknamed Bushmaster for the deadly tropical pit vipers found in that area. When the 158th infantry was re deployed to the Pacific most, if not all, of these rifles were sent to Raritan Arsenal in N.J. and were destroyed. This specimen has seemingly escaped that fate. As with any arsenal reworking of a large number of rifles, parts are frequently interchanged or replaced. The bbls. were shortened to 18" & the front sight re mounted. The stocks were modified by removing the forend & handguard approx. 2 3/8" ahead of the lower band leaving the band retaining spring in place. The buttstock is an "S" type straight grip stock with grasping grooves. These stocks were given an arsenal rework finish at the time of conversion partially obscuring some of the markings. There is a partial boxed "SP" on the left side over the trigger guard. Encircled "P" proof under grip. The left side of the buttstock has a horizontally oriented "FT CLAYTON". Oriented vertically near the butt is the "JSP" marking of the Jungle Security Platoon and the encircled "Hell Gate" marking of the Panama Mobile Force. There is a rack #17 at the toe. The stock is equipped w/ a fine checkered stamped buttplate. Brown leather Model 1907 sling. Sling has heavy wear, scuffing and arsenal markings are not visible. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: there is a hand written note in the butt which states "R.I. A. "Bushmaster" #78748, purchased from K-Mart, San Antonio in 1968 for $69.95, from a crate sent from Panama, used by Jungle Security Platoon, out of Ft. Clayton. C.Z. made in 1907, converted in 1942. Rack #17, inspector S. Priestly, 1906-07. Panama Mobile Force insignia "HellGate"". Included are photocopies of the sale of this rifle in May 14, 2022 and information on these rifles are mentioned in the reference works "03 Springfield Service Rifle by Canfield and The Springfield 1903 Rifles by Brophy". CONDITION: stock set has a very professional appearing arsenal rework finish with light wear and scattered handling marks. The metal was given a blue refinish as the Ordnance shops in Panama were not equipped to do parkerizing. The metal has light wear, thinning and scattered handling marks with a number of small pits. There are a number of small pits in the area of the wood line and on both sides of the forward end of the barrel. Surface of barrel behind front sight has transverse scratches under the finish, likely from the use of a lathe steady rest. Good shiny bore w/ sharp lands and slightly gray appearance in throat area. PROVANANCE: from the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1194/RW). CURIO. $.

MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 0053. 21 3/4" replacement bbl. Fully adj. aperture rear sight graduated to 1,000 meters. Blade front sight w/ protective ears. The Johnson ...morerifle was developed by Melvin M. Johnson, a Marine Corp Reserve officer. The rifle was entered into competition with the now famous M1 Garand rifle but not adopted by the United States Military. The Dutch government ordered a large quantity of these rifles to be sent to the Dutch East Indies. Due to the start of WWII relatively few guns were shipped & a number of these undelivered Johnson rifles were used by the U.S. Marine Corps along with the Johnson light machine gun. Receiver is marked on top "CAL. 30-06 SEMI-AUTO" / "JOHNSON AUTOMATICS" / "MODEL OF 1941" / "MADE IN PROVIDENCE, R.I. U.S.A." plus patent information. Marked on right rear of receiver in inverted triangle "CRANSTON ARMS CO." 5-pointed Dutch acceptance star. Bbl. is marked on right rear over chamber "1944"; marked on top over chamber "30 06"; marked on right side over chamber "JA". RARE AND UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO OBTAIN MARLIN

Lot # 1035 (Sale Order: 36 of 696)

MC58 SERIAL #1 PROTOTYPE USMC SEMI-AUTO TRAINING RIFLE. Cal. 22LR. S# 1. Bbl. 24". This rifle S#1 from a group of only 5 prototype training rifles submitted to the U.S. M...morearine Corps in response to an invitation to submit 5 - 22 caliber semi-auto rifles to be evaluated as training rifles which would simulate the M1 Garand and be used for early marksmanship training. These 5 rifles used the commercial Model 89 barrel, action and magazine. The sights, stock, handguard and other features were designed to replicate the appearance and handling characteristics of the then issued M1 rifles. All of the 5 rifles were hand made and parts were not interchangeable. They were serial numbered 1-5. After trials between May, 1956 and May, 1957 the rifles were returned to Marlin and an attempt made to remedy a number of deficiencies which became apparent during the trials. Most of the problems were with small parts and failures to feed and eject. The lack of a bolt hold open device was remedied by an addition of a spring loaded pin mounted in the rear sight base. According to Marlin firearms by Brophy the rifles were ultimately given to the Marine Corps after the completion of the trials. The round grooved receiver is fitted with a swing safety at the right rear and is serial numbered 1 on top of the band at the forward end of the receiver. An aperture rear sight is fitted which gives the same types of adjustment and sight picture as the M1 rifles. Blade front sight with protective ears which are profiled similar to the M1 sights. This sight assembly is mounted in a dovetail sporting type ramp. The barrel band which retains the dummy gas cylinder appears to be from a sporting rifle. Unmarked walnut stock and handguard. Stock has "Marlin Bullseye" at belly. Flat steel buttplate with horizontal grooves. 1 1/4" swing swivels. Green web sling marked "MRT JAN. 1953". MAGS: 1 detachable 7 rd. blued steel magazine. CONDITION: despite its use as a trial rifle, the rifle retains a nice appearance with a large percentage of original finish. Stock set has only light wear & scattered handling marks. Dull finished metal has light wear thinning and scattered scratches. Bore has micro groove rifling and is shiny but lands show moderate wear. PROVANANCE: from the Estate Collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-4914/RW). CURIO. $8,000-12,000.

Colonel William Br...moreophy stated in his book "THE 1903 SPRINGFIELD RIFLES " that there may have been as few as three of these rifles produced. Two styles were made one used a service type stock and one had a custom made sporting style stock. The development of the Model 54 series rifles coupled with the need to purchase the Model 1903 actions from a government arsenal spelled an early end to the Model 1922. This model was advertised only in the September 1922, issue of "Arms and the Man". Captain Guy H. Emerson used a Type No. 2 Winchester Sniper to win the coveted Wimbledon Cup in the same year. The heavy weight barrel, made from Nickel steel tapers from 1 1/8" at the receiver to 7/8" at the muzzle and is marked on the left side, "WINCHESTER" "NICKEL STEEL" and near stock line ".30 GOV'T'06". It has the early small knobs and the flip-up aperture. The front sight is made from a Browning Automatic Rifle front sight base, marked "W" and has the sight blade fitted in a dovetail. Blade is marked ".045". The barrel has scope blocks and has a Winchester A-5 telescopic sight The 5 power scope has external adjustments and a crosshair reticle. VERY SCARCE AND DESIRABLE U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL

Lot # 1039 (Sale Order: 42 of 696)

1898 KRAG 22 LONG RF CAL. GALLERY PRACTICE BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 22 Long RF. S#476438. Bbl. 30". The concept of a service type rifle firing a lower power & less expensi...moreve type of ammunition gained popularity in the last decade of the 19th Century because of the scarcity of rifle ranges due to the increased urban expansion. This was especially true for National Guard Units which had armories located in the cities. The concept has advantages for the regular service in the same way & could even allow marksmanship training to be carried out indoors using gallery type ranges. The adaptation of a service rifle to use a cartridge much smaller than it was designed for creates a multitude of problems to overcome including: the firing pin placement if a rim fire cartridge is used, and a positive means of extraction. This Model 1898 design uses a special barreled receiver which was intended to be issued w/out a stock & would be switched to a stock already in use. This was intended as a cost saving measure but was universally unpopular & the rifles began to be issued w/ their own stock assembly. The receivers used for these rifles were stamped "CAL. .22" on the top left rear in addition to the standard markings The receiver was relieved on the right side of the ring and right rail to allow better access to load the cartridge & a sm. hole was drilled in the left side of the receiver to install a pin which forced the main extractor out of engagement w/ the rim fire extractor. The bbl. which has an eccentric bore is has a chamber which is oriented to the 6 o’clock position to allow the CF firing pin to strike the RF cartridge. The bbl. is fitted w/ a brass ring type extractor at the rear which slides on 2 pins & allows a more positive extraction of the sm. RF case. The stocks used for these rifles are marked w/ a "J.S.A." cartouche & are usually dated 1905 or '06. Some of the barreled receivers were put into refinished service rifle stocks & may have the proof mark & earlier date which is the case w/ this rifle. A total of 841 of these rifles were mfg. Most, if not all, were issued to the National Guard as opposed to the regular army. The rear sight is a standard Model 1902 tangent type w/ sliding peak graduated to 2,000 yards. Blade front sight. This attractive rifle w/ a large degree of original finish & crisp markings retains the features of a standard Krag service rifle including the mag. assembly & smooth trap buttplate. Unmarked period brown leather Krag type sling w/single brass hook. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: brass muzzle cover & sight protector. CONDITION: stock set shows careful use w/ a moderately worn original finish w/ scattered handling marks throughout. Metal retains 50% original blue finish turning gray w/ light wear. Loading gate & sideplate show traces of case colors. Extractor retains a large degree of fire blue. Shiny bore w/ sharp rifling but an area of fine pitting forward of chamber.
