U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1903/A1 USMC BOLT ACTION

Lot # 1048 (Sale Order: 51 of 696)

SNIPER RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 1496182. 24" Bbl. Star guaged. Ladder aperture rear sight graduated to 2850 yards with volley notch. Sight face was polished bright and has s...moretandard aperture. Standard issue blade front sight. Barrel is marked behind front sight "SA flaming bomb 12-36". This barrel date would be correct for the rifle serial number. In response to requests for Sniper rifles a number of National Match rifles were rebuilt at the Marine Corp Depot of supplies in Philadelphia by Marine Armorer's utilizing rifles on hand. When the supply of National Match rifles was depleted a number of selected service rifles were also included. The rifles were equipped w/ Unertl target type telescopes. Mounting these telescopes required that the receiver ring of the rifle and the top of the barrel forward of the rear sight be drilled and tapped for the Unertl supplied scope blocks. The receiver rings were ground slightly underneath the blocks to insure a correct fit. The forward base required that the handguard be modified to a lower profile and a rectangular hole cut for block installation. The 7/8" tube telescope has a fine crosshair, external adjustments including adjustable objective and two adjustable stop rings These scopes were not fitted with return springs. The scope is marked on top rear "J.UNERTL USMC-SNIPER" and is serial number "2701". Focus ring is marked "8" indicating the magnification. Scope mounts are Dural with black finish. Adjusting drums on rear mount do not have white enhancement. Screw in scope caps are present. The receiver has polished rails and a punch type proof mark in the right rail. Receiver ring has "hatcher hole". Bolt with swept handle has electro-pencil matching S#. Bolt handle marked "NS" on top. Trigger guard and floorplate have polished blue finish. Grooved trigger. Unmarked brown leather Model 1907 type sling with brass hooks. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: plastic oiler in butt. CONDITION: stock is likely a replacement. Receiver is parkerized with light wear and slightly visible grind mark on top of ring. Barrel and sight base have polished blue/black appearance. Scope blocks are blue not case colored. Trigger guard does not have stake marks at screw heads. Scope retains a large degree of original blue finish with light wear and scattered handling marks. Scope appears slightly cloudy but serviceable. Very good shiny bore. PROVANANCE: from the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1216/RW). CURIO. $4,000-6,000.

WW1 USMC 1903 SPRINGFIELD BOLT ACTION SNIPER RIFLE

Lot # 1057 (Sale Order: 60 of 696)

. Cal. 30-06. S# 651179. Bbl. 24" w/ SA, "flaming bomb" & 4-17 markings. Blade front sight. Ladder rear sight graduated to 2850yds. w/ volley notch. Rifle is equipped w/ ...morea Winchester A5 scope that has an added "USMC" marking, a fine crosshair reticle & poor optics. The mounts & rings appear to be of the correct type but the rear ring lacks the external spring. The rifle falls in the correct serial range for Marine 1903 A5 Sniper rifles but the spacing of the mount is different than known examples. On early examples of this sniper rifle the rear base was mounted on the rear sight base giving a distance of about 6". On later examples that retained the rear sight the distance was about 7 1/5". The distance from the front of the rear base to the rear of the front base is about 6" & this example retains the rear sight. It is possible this rifle is a post service assembled piece. The base rifle appears to be a correct WW2 era USMC rebuild w/ an added gas escape hole on left side of receiver & an electro pencil numbered matching straight handled blued bolt. It is known that the Marine Corps kept a small number of the A5 sniper rifles on hand for training well into WW2 & a smaller number may have been used in combat during that war. Two-bolt walnut stock w/ bottom mounted sling swivels & worn M1907 sling. Top of butt stock has rack number that reads "3 678". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: leather scope cover. CONDITION: stock set has arsenal rework oil finish w/ scattered dings & handling wear. Metal retains 70% arsenal rework parkerized & blue finishes w/ some light dings on receiver, scattered edge wear, thinning & some oxidation on bottom metal. Good bore w/ some frosting but strong rifling. PROVENANCE: From the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1210/MJC). CURIO. $1500-2500.

RARE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1903 HOFFER THOMPSON BOLT

Lot # 1068 (Sale Order: 71 of 696)

ACTION 22 CALIBER GALLERY PRACTICE RIFLE. Cal. 22 Short. S# 452937. Bbl. 24" marked behind front sight "SA" flaming bomb "7-10". Ladder rear sight graduated to 2400 yards...more w/ volley notch. Dished windage elevation knobs. Blade front sight w/ unmarked protective sheet metal sight cover. Receiver bridge is marked "22". Bolt hold open plunger is not present in left rear of receiver. These interesting rifles were produced from 1907-1919 to allow for training troops on short outdoor or indoor firing ranges. The earlier attempts to convert military rifles to use the inexpensive & low powered 22 RF cartridges while somewhat successful did not provide the same experience as loading & firing w/ service type ammunition. The solution offered by Major Jay E. Hoffer was to use a steel adapter resembling a standard cartridge which could be fed from stripper clips & would utilize the same bolt and firing mechanism as a service rifle. Some modifications were suggested by Major John T. Thompson & the result was the Hoffer Thompson Springfield. The rifles were marked w/ 22 on various parts although this example is only marked on the receiver bridge. The steel cartridge holders have a spring loaded plunger which allowed the loading of a 22 short cartridge in a side port using a special ramrod tool. The rifles were not popular because the long jump of the bullet to the rifling did not give good accuracy & the cartridge holders were difficult to keep clean & rust free. The design was ultimately superceded by the Model 1922 rifles. Bolt has straight down handle & is marked underneath safety lug "S35". Rifle is equipped w/ smooth trigger & fine checkered buttplate w/ trap. Walnut S Type stock w/ single recoil bolt. Stock is marked on left side w/ boxed "CN 1910" indicating that this high wood stock is a Rock Island Arsenal mfg. replacement. The stock also has a faint encircled script "P" proof under grip. Stock marked at tip w/ "S". Handguard appears to be original & is mfg. w/ sighting groove & 2 reinforcing clips. Brown leather Model 1907 military sling w/ brass hooks. Heavily worn sling has indistinct markings, wear & flexing. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 5 unmarked blued steel cartridge holders w/ spring loaded plungers & 1 brass stripper clip. CONDITION: replacement buttstock has arsenal rework finish w/ slight loss of wood in inletted areas. Has wear, staining & moderate handling marks including a check in the right heel area plus a sm. gouge on the right side behind grip. Sm. missing chips on left side below receiver tang. Handguard appears to have worn original finish. Metal finish is well worn but original including the model appearance of the receiver. Windage adj. does not function correctly on rear sight. Retaining screw does not seat fully in upper band. Good bore w/ lightly worn lands. PROVANANCE: from the Estate Collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1236/RW). CURIO. $1,000-1,500.
