SCARCE WWII SPRINGFIELD M1 GARAND BRITISH LEND

Lot # 1127 (Sale Order: 130 of 696)

LEASE SEMI-AUTO MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 323416. Bbl. 24". Bbl. markings are inverted on left side & include "S-A 8-41" plus "5". Bbl. has the Birmingham Nitro pro...moreof export markings on top in front of gas cyl. ring. Throat & muzzle gauges 1.0. On March 27, 1941, Garand rifles were authorized to be shipped to Great Britain under the Lend/Lease Act along w/ a second appropriation on Oct 27th of that year resulting in a total of approx. 38,000 rifles supplied to G. Britain until deliveries were halted in June, 1942 due to the shortage of these rifles needed to arm US troops. The rifles were slightly modified by the addition of a red band around or in the case of this rifle on the left side of the forend w/ the stenciled marking either ".30 or .300" w/ or w/out the periods. This example has the 300 w/ the period. The reason for this was to prevent confusion of ammunition types between the U.S. rimless .30 caliber & the British 303 cal. which used a rimmed case. The rifles apparently saw little or no use during the war except by the Home guard & other security forces. At the end of the war some of these rifles were sold to Am. Arms dealers & in order to leave Great Britain they were given commercial export proofs. This example has the crown over "BNP" indicating the Birmingham proof & is also marked "8 tons per". There are also a crossed swords marking w/ "LB 2". The crown "NP" appears on top of the receiver ring. The operating rod & bolt lugs are unmarked. Locking bar rear sight w/ battle range elevation knob. Blade front sight w/ protective ears. Front sight screw retains its original protective seal. Walnut stock set, buttstock correctly marked on left side w/ boxed "S.A. & GHS" plus crossed cannons. Circle "P" proof under grip. Front handguard has dark red painted rectangle enclosing black stenciled .300. Green web sling dated, "1944". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: buttstock contains plastic oiler & grease container. Two cleaning rod sections, cleaning rod tip & handle. White plastic muzzle & front sight protector. CONDITION: stock set has original finish w/ a good appearance. Stock has scattered handing marks throughout. Handguards have moderate wear & handling marks. Additional marking on handguard has light wear but remains legible. Metal retains 70% original parkerized finish w/ light wear & scatter handling marks. Gas cyl. lock has notable loss of finish. Bore has sharp lands & generally shiny appearance w/ light frosting toward the muzzle & the bbl. PROVANANCE: from the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1209/RW). CURIO. $1,000-1,500.

SCARCE WW1 IMPERIAL GERMAN MODEL 1918 TANKGEWEHR

Lot # 1144 (Sale Order: 147 of 696)

ANTI-TANK RIFLE WITH AN EXTREMELY RARE CLOTH AMMUNITION CARRIER. Cal. 13 x 92 SR. S# 6372, all visible numbers match. Bbl. 39". Tangent rear sight graduated to 500 meters...more. Inverted V front sight. These massive and unique rifles were the first specifically designed anti -tank gun. Nicknamed the “elephant gun” by the German soldiers, it at last gave them a weapon which could supplant the increasingly ineffective “K” ammunition used in rifles and machine guns. The total numbers produced were approximately 16,000. They were developed in record time by Mauser using a cartridge designed by the Polte Ammunition Factory in Magdeburg. This ammunition used a semi-rimmed 92mm long case and a steel cored 13mm bullet. The bullet weighed 795 grains and had a muzzle velocity of 2560 feet/second. This compares to the later U.S. 50 BMG M2 round with a bullet of 720 grains at a muzzle velocity of 2800 feet/second. The round will penetrate approximately 1" of armor at 100 meters. The receiver ring is marked on top with a Mauser “banner” and “1918”. There are “Imperial Proofs” on the right side of the receiver ring and barrel over the chamber. The left side of the receiver and barrel have “eagle” acceptance marks. The barrel is marked “KK” at bottom ahead of the forend. The action is a single shot and uses 4 locking lugs on the bolt. The bolt has 3 gas escape holes (increased from 2 in the original production) in the forward end. The safety is the standard Mauser type. The stocks were primarily Elm with a two piece construction similar to the Japanese Arisaka rifles. A separate pistol grip was added for easier handling. The stock is marked on the right side of the butt with “Imperial monograms and a letter “R”. It also has “2409” in fading white painted numbers. The belly of the stock has two Imperial monograms. The barrel band has flanges to use the bipod from the MG08/15 light machine gun. These sheet metal bipods were too lightly constructed and a stronger tubular leg design was developed, as seen by the unmarked example on this rifle. The rifles saw fairly widespread use during the later part of 1918 by the German Army and were reasonably successful but still could not cope with the increasing numbers of Allied tanks. Production continued after the Armistice for a short time but ultimately Germany was forbidden to build anti-tank weapons. Many examples of the Model 1918 rifles were hidden from the Allied Control Commission by the Reichswehr and used up until the 1930’s. Some were sent to Sweden and used by the Swedish Army. Many nations did test the rifle after WW1 but it was not widely used. Reported combat uses after the war were the Rif war and a limited use in China. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: this gun is accompanied by an extremely rare cloth ammunition carrier made from a heavy green Canvas like material. The unmarked carrier has internal loops for 20 cartridges and is supported by a woven shoulder strap with a roller buckle adjustment. The flap closure has two leather tabs held by steel buttons. The carrier contains 20 original cartridges of which one is a misfire. They all have Polte headstamps, are all marked T67 and dated from July to November of 1918. CONDITION: the rifle is in good overall condition. The stock has moderate wear and handling marks with areas of flaking finish. There are several small cracks behind the pistol grip including a slight separation of the seam of the two piece stock. The metal is turning gray and patina with scattered fine pitting and light wear. The receiver, originally bright is a notably lighter shade than the balance of the metal. Bipod has worn flaking original paint. Cartridge carrier has faded appearance w/ light wear and staining but remains in serviceable condition. Stitching appears tight and original. Cartridges vary from dark patina to a cleaned appearance. Very good shiny bore with sharp lands. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (23-121/RW). CURIO. $9,000-14,000.

SCARCE IMPERIAL GERMAN WW1 MODEL 1918 TANKGEWEHR

Lot # 1145 (Sale Order: 148 of 696)

BOLT ACTION SINGLE SHOT ANTI-TANK RIFLE. Cal. 13X92SR. S# 5067. All visible numbers match. Developed during WW1 by the Imperial German Army to give soldiers a way to cope...more w/ the increasing number of Allied tanks this massive rifle was the first specifically designed anti-tank gun. (The powerful 13mm cartridge was originally designed to be used in a machine gun which never reached production. It used a bullet weighing 795 grains & traveling at a muzzle velocity of 2560 fps giving a penetration of approximately 1" of armor at 100 meters. This allowed penetration of most of the tanks of this era.) Approximately 16,000 of these guns were manufactured before production was halted early in 1919. The massive receiver is fitted with a 39" barrel. The receiver is marked on top of the ring with the Mauser "banner" and "1918". The right side of the receiver and barrel have "Imperial Proofs".The left side of the receiver & barrel have "eagle" acceptance marks. Barrel marked on bottom ahead of forend "KK". The barrel is fitted with a tangent rear sight graduated to 500 meters. Inverted "V" front sight. The massive bolt has four locking lugs, straight bolt handle and Mauser "flag" type safety. The elm stock has a 2 piece construction similar to the Japanese Arisaka rifles. There is a separate wooden pistol grip to allow better control for the firer. Stock markings behind the trigger guard include S# & imperial monograms. Buttplates were not fitted to these rifles. The forend has a barrel band which serves as a mount for a bipod. The bipods used on these rifles were the same as those used on the MG 08-15 light machine guns. This unmarked example is an early model with stamped legs. Later models used tubular legs which were more durable. CONDITION: the stock has the wear to be expected on a rifle which has seen heavy use. There are scratches & handling marks through-out w/ small missing chips around the butt. There is a notable approx. 4 inch crack on the left side of the comb. The dovetail seam on the sides of the buttstock has opened a small amount and has been filled to prevent opening further. The bright receiver has been lightly cleaned. The bolt has a cleaned appearance as well. The balance of the metal has a thinning blue turning gray w/ small handling marks. Notable area of oxidation & light pitting on right side of barrel by forend tip. The bipod has traces of its original green painted finish w/ wear & light oxidation through-out. Bore has a dark oxidized appearance w/ worn lands. PROVENANCE STATEMENT: from the Estate Collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1258/RW). CURIO. $6,000-9,000.
