MASSIVE & LARGEST COLLECTION OF WORLD WAR II

Lot # 1336 (Sale Order: 340 of 693)

LIBERATION FLAGS EVER ASSEMBLED. Possibly the only time in history where non-Americans were motivated to produce flags in celebration of the United States. After the D-Da...morey landings in June 1944, American & Allied troops started their inward movement into France to liberate Paris & the newly liberated French people made American & other allied flags from materials that were available to greet troops who were conquering Nazi occupied territory. These flags no doubt are among the most unusual & unique & aesthetically pleasing of any group of American flags. All of these flags have been purchased over many years, mostly by the late well known flag collector & historian Bruce Smith and Robert Magee. This collection of 71 flags, almost all identified to the town they were made, each tells an individual story of World War II. The materials used in these flags are generally not the silk or wool bunting that flags were usually made, but material from sheeting, draperies, dresses. Fabrics include cotton, wool, silk & different blends. The stars were not the typical polished cotton. Some flags are mounted on dowels or sticks & are parade size. The largest flag in this grouping is 32" x 63"; majority of flags are in the range of 20" x 30" & 30" x 40". The smallest flags are a pair of 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" US & British parade flags, hand painted. Most of the flags are over 11". Stars on flags are sometimes painted, hand sewn, machine sewn, glued, metallic & one of the most unusual is foil stars. The official flag in 1944 is 48 stars & 13 stripes, but some of the makers only knew the style of the American flag & flags range from 20 stars to as many as 64 stars, though most are 48. Stripes range from 7 to 19. Other Allied flags represented are British, Russian, Free French tri color w/ cross of Lorriane, one Australian. Some flags the canton rests on the red "blood stripe". Photos taken in towns & especially those taken in Paris show a variety of these liberation flags with allied troops entering. This is an amazing collection that can never be duplicated. CONDITION: fair to excellent. Perspective bidder should examine as flags vary in condition; though most are very good to fine overall. PROVENANCE: Bruce Smith estate; Robert Magee collection. (02-12989/JS). $25,000-30,000.
