EXCEEDINGLY RARE WWII GERMAN 1944 ZIELGERAT 1229

Lot # 1007 (Sale Order: 2 of 927)

NIGHT VISION SCOPE CODE NAMED VAMPIR. It is hard to imagine a modern battlefield without the capabilities of night vision, but during WWII the technology was in its infan...morecy. As early as 1935, Allgemeine Elektricitats-Gesellschaft developed night vision equipment for use by armor as well as infantry units. Unfortunately, the equipment was exceptionally large, heavy and expensive. In 1942, German researchers developed prototype night vision sights for use on anti-tank guns but not hand held weapons. The Zielgerat 1229 was first produced in 1944 and code named, "Vampir". It was an active infrared system in which an infrared spotlight illuminates the target area with infrared light that is converted to the visible spectrum in an electronic scope/camera. It represented a giant leap forward in the production and use of night vision equipment. The Zielgerat 1229 could be fitted to the StG44 assault rifle or the MG42 and MG34 machine guns. The ZG1229 was fitted with lugs to the StG44 at C.G. Haenel at Suhl, the famous German weapons production facility. A total of 310 were made and delivered to the Wehrmacht in 1945. Snipers who were lucky enough to receive the Vampir device were designated "Nachtjagers" which translates to "Night Hunters". The ZG1229 Vampir was by no means light in weight. It weighed approximately 5 pounds but needed a battery pack weighing 30 pounds mounted to a Tragegestell 39 pack frame. Add to this 11 pounds for the StG44 assault rifle, and the "Nachtjager" carried a total of nearly 50 pounds into the field in addition to his normal pack. The vast majority of the Vampirs were used on the Eastern Front to stem the advance of Russian forces pushing to Berlin. This example includes the Zielgerat infrared scope itself, and the modified gas mask canister that contains a transformer and other electrical components required to power the scope. The original battery pack and infrared illuminator are missing, but an American illuminator of similar age is included. The scope would have been mounted to the top of the rifle and the illuminator would have been mounted to the top of the scope. The late owner was stationed in England with the US Navy in the 1950s. He obtained the scope from a colleague in the British Army. The scope was known to be operational as late as 1960. Since then it has been stored in a heated basement and no attempts have been made to power it up. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letters from Roger Shoemaker's widow, Lois and a friend, Carl Zipper. A large loose leaf binder titled, "(WWII German) Night Vision Technical Information from www.cdvant.com website". CONDITION: scope and illuminator show some oxidation and wear to the paint acquired over many years of storage. The gas mask canister also shows areas of oxidation mixed with original paint. All cables and cords show wear and some fraying but appear substantially complete. A singular opportunity to acquire one of the world's first practical night vision scopes and a rare survivor of late war German technology. PROVENANCE: Estate of Roger Shoemaker. (02-17306/BF). $25,000-35,000.

DENNY'S GUNS NEW MODEL AUTO & BURGLER SBS.

Lot # 1038 (Sale Order: 12 of 927)

Cal. 20ga. S# B7636. Bbl.9.25". From 1921 to 1925 Ithaca manufactured a very short version of their standard 20ga. double barreled shotgun that would become known as the...more "Auto & Burgler". They made around 2500 of their "Model A" which chambered 2.5" shells in that time frame. In 1925 they upgraded it to the "New Improved Double" (NID) shotgun, which could chamber 2.75" shells, which became known as their "Model B". While the Model A had 10" barrels, the Model B utilized 12.2" barrels. They also redesigned the pistol grip and boasted approximately 1500 in this new configuration. Eventually, due to the very low number of these, they became very expensive, and with that, more desirable. In the late 1990's Denny's Guns started manufacturing them again, this time using the Italian Tristar Model 411 as the base gun. These were also manufactured in very limited numbers and remain rare and desirable today. The example here was built on a beautiful case-colored receiver and boasts barrels just over 9" in length. It is also chambered in 20ga., utilizing a vent rib w/ a gold bead sight. The barrels are bright blued and it has warm brown hardwood furniture & double gold triggers. While many were registered as AOW's (Any Other Weapon) this particular example is classified as a SBS (Short Barreled Shotgun). CONDITION: As typical with these, there is very little evidence of use. Both sides of the receiver are engraved "NEW MODEL AUTO & BURGLER GUN". There is a light amount of scuffing on the right side of the receiver over the engraving visible under close inspection. Barrels are shiny. NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT SBS REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. (03-1581/JZ). MODERN CLASS III. $400-600.

GERMAN MG34 LAFETTTE TRIPOD & ACCESSORIES

Lot # 1040 (Sale Order: 13 of 927)

1)An awesome example of the WWII era Lafette tripod that was designed for the MG34. Tripod top, rear of mounting lugs marked w/ German code FSU indicating Brandenburger ...moreFahrrad und Motorradwerk, Excelsior mfg. in 1943. Opposite of trigger marked "BKH 1942". Standard German mfg. procedures being well known for over engineering, this mount will not disappoint. It is a multi-functional tripod designed for low ground firing w/ a wide berth of traverse & elevation as well as the ability to add an anti-aircraft mount. These mounts are not a simple stationary device only designed to lift the firearm off the ground but are complicated pieces of machinery that actually aid & assist in the function of the MG34. Use of this mount allows the MG34 to be fired remotely, partially concealing the position of the operator. There is a provision for mounting optics directly on the tripod when utilizing this system. Most external metal surfaces painted in period correct shade of green. This is an original German MG34 Lafette tripod & not a much more common Yugo import designed around the MG42 / MG3. CONDITION: all moving parts are smooth w/ a full range & appear to function exactly as intended. Remote firing mechanism moves freely & functions correctly. All traverse adjustment related markings are clear. Paint coverage is complete aside from obvious areas of friction during use & mounting w/ some wear as expected from this period. Pads on front remain soft, pliable & very smooth although they look like finish has been roughed up from abrasion. 2) MG42/MG3 Anti Aircraft tripod. Painted green. Appears to still retain originality and not modified like so many others. CONDITION: the vast majority of all components wear green paint. Legs appear straight & mechanism moves effortlessly. Foot spikes are strait and solid. Very clean unit. 3) 3 spare MG34 barrels. While 2 are largely unmarked aside from a few scattered markings1 is clearly marked; "936R / 249 / 936-39 / 4846 / S / 15" w/ numerous waffenamt marks. Blued finish on all. Bores are all bright w/ strong rifling. 4) 3 Gurttrommel (Belt Drums) & 1 Gurttrommeltrager (carrying frame). All painted varying shades of green. Drums are assumably post war given lack of markings while frame has Waffenamt & numbers. Drums & holder all in terrific condition. 5) 40 MG34 belts. 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser) non-disintegrating belt sections, 20 of which are still as issued, in sealed packaging. 6) Anti-aircraft sight. 4.25" diameter "spider web" sight w/ spring loaded base. (02-17636/JZ). $3,000-5,000.

Lot # 1044 (Sale Order: 17 of 927)

The FV102 Striker is a British member of the Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance, Tracked classification “CVR(T)” designed as an Anti-Tank Guided Missile “ATGM” carrier, specif...moreically for the Swingfire Guided Missile System. There were a total of only 48 ordered in this configuration, & we believe this is the only example to be imported into the United States. Each FV102 Striker is originally loaded with 5 missiles, ready for immediate deployment in the launcher, and 5 more on board for reloading. The Striker Swingfire anti-tank guided missile launcher is boxed on the rear of the body. When needed, the launch box is elevated 35-degrees and the missiles are fired over the front of the vehicle. They are wire-guided missiles where the gunner has to keep his sights on the target and and control it with a small joystick. It is fitted with eight smoke grenade dischargers, in two clusters of four, on each side. It is fitted with a turret and mount for a 7.62mm L7 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), the British variant of the Belgian FN MAG. Its ammunition capacity was 3000 rounds. The FV102 carries a crew of 3, with speed and agility being a top priority. The Striker engines were initially a Jaguar 4.2 liter burning gasoline, and producing approximately 190 horsepower. Later in production the engines were replaced with a Cummings 5.9 liter diesel. Armor is aluminum instead of steel, for lighter weight and mobility, allowing a top speed of 50Mph with a range of 300 miles, and still providing protection from small arms fire and fragmentation. The striker first entered service in 1976 with the Royal Artillery Anti-tank Guided Missile Batteries, later being fielded by the British during Operation Iraqi Freedom, following Saddam Hussein’s ordered invasion of Kuwait. EXCEPTIONALLY RARE & SOUGHT AFTER MODEL 1903

Lot # 1046 (Sale Order: 19 of 927)

SPRINGFIELD ROD BAYONET BOLT ACTION MILITARY RIFLE IN ORIGINAL CONDITION. Cal. 30-03. Ser. #3987. Bbl. 24". In 1892 the United States adopted the Norwegian designed Krag-...moreJorgenson rifle. This rifle was a 5 shot repeater using the newly developed smokeless powder which was to replace the earlier single shot “trap door” rifle which used black powder. When the United States went to war with Spain in 1898, some basic deficiencies became apparent in the Krag design compared to the Mauser rifles used by Spain. The Mauser, using a stronger action with 2 front locking lugs, had a flatter-shooting, more powerful cartridge and was loaded by 5 round stripper clips allowing a higher rate of fire due to faster loading. The Krag rifle did not lend itself to further development which would correct these problems. The years immediately following the Spanish-American War saw a great deal of research to develop a replacement for the Krag rifle. The design selected was patterned after the Mauser Model 98 rifle using the earlier small ring receiver. This became the basis for the United States Magazine Rifle, Cal. 30, Model of 1903. This rifle featured the 2 locking lugs with a third safety lug, a 5-round magazine loaded with stripper clips, and firing a new rimless cartridge now referred to as the 30-03. This cartridge utilized the 220 grain bullet of the Krag cartridge but the velocity was increased from 2000 feet per second to 2300 feet per second resulting in a flatter trajectory. A prominent feature on this new rifle was the design of the bayonet. This was made as a rod .287" in diameter and 23-1/2" long carried in the forend underneath the barrel. This bayonet when fixed, extended 10" beyond the muzzle of the rifle. The rod bayonet, similar to that which had been used in the earlier 1884 “trap door” rifle, was not well liked and a change was reputedly made at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt to a knife bayonet. Both the Springfield and Rock Island Armories tooled up to produce this new rifle, however Rock Island produced parts but few completed rifles. Any completed rifles were apparently retained at Rock Island and converted to the later types. These well-made and finished rifles were actually produced in 1904 through early 1906. Records indicate that 76,689 rod bayonet rifles were produced at Springfield with an additional 18,000 rifles (parts only) produced at Rock Island. 72,844 of these rifles were converted to the 1905 type leaving approximately 3,800 rifles which apparently were not converted to the new type. Some authorities have indicated that rod bayonet rifles may have remained in service as late as WWI. This rifle has the later type tangent rear sight with 2 pins visible at the forward end. Sight is graduated to 2000 yards & equipped with the swing-up aperture similar to those used on the Krag Model 1902 rear sight. The blade front sight is mounted on a fixed base which has rear serrations and two distinctive lightning holes. The bayonet described earlier has three relief cuts at the tip which is not knurled. The rear of the bayonet is not threaded. The bolt which was given a bright finish has the numeral “1” underneath the handle. Bolt has gas port on underside. The extractor was finished with a “fire” blue. The safety is the improved type marked “SAFE” and “READY”. Cocking piece has two notches. Rifle was given the modification which does not allow rifle to fire if the trigger is pushed forward. The cutoff is polished bright on the underside. The front band has the correct flat on the stacking swivel. The lower band is the correct solid type. Smooth buttplate with trap; trap diameter is approximately .860. Matching walnut stock set with crisp markings. Boxed “JSA” inspector’s mark with “1904” date over trigger guard. Encircled script “P” proof and tiny numeral “2” under grip. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: one original 30-03 cartridge, head stamped “UMC” and “2 06”. Cartridge case measures 2.555"; overall length is 3.312". Black molded plastic carrying case. CONDITION: original finish stock set with light wear and scattered handling marks throughout commensurate with careful service. Lower band has been moved during past disassembly of rifle leaving an area of abraded finish on the top of the handguard extending forward approximately 1” and the bottom of forend has three scratches the longest of which is approximately 6". Metal retains a degree of original thinning blue finish with areas of oxidation and very fine pitting notable on receiver bridge, rear sight and base, trigger guard bow, and upper and lower bands. Bright bolt turning gray with spots of fine oxidation. Bolt handle is overall gray with very fine pitting. Forward end of extractor shows “fire” blue. Front sight base has worn finish from use of a sight cover. Floorplate and buttplate have turned overall gray. Bore is shiny with lightly worn lands and darkened appearance in the throat area. (22-4211/RW) CURIO. $20,000-30,000.
