EXQUISITE JAPANESE GOLD DECORATED KATANA WITH

Lot # 1433 (Sale Order: 392 of 491)

TACHI MOUNTS. This breath-taking katana would more accurately be termed an itomaki no tachi. It appears to be of the Edo period as indicated by the decorative motifs util...moreized. We have been unable to remove the tsuka but suspect that the blade may be much earlier. The overall length is 40" and the blade measures 26 1/2". The blade has a relatively wide irregular hamon with a gold plated habaki. Below the tsuba is a single darkened seppa with a gold plated seppa next to the habaki. Above the tsuba are 3 darkened seppa topped by a single gilded seppa. The tsuba has a darkened ground with gold edges and elaborately embellished corners. There are also several repeating mon around the tsuba. The top and bottom of the tsuba are identical. The fuchi and kashira are similarly decorated with golden edges and repeating mon throughout. The tsuka-ito is a bronze color and wraps over gold encrusted silk cloth. The heavily gilded menuki are made up of 3 mon each showing 8 smaller circles surrounding a central larger circle. The saya is quite breath-taking with a body of bronze colored nashiji and a saya-maki with golden silk cloth beneath, matching the tsuka. The mounts on the saya all have a darkened ground with gold highlighted decorations, primarily consisting of family mon. The same golden mon, consisting of 8 smaller circles around a central circle, repeats throughout the length of the saya. The ashi appears to be buff leather with family mon terminals. The silk suspension cord connected to the ashi is black, purple, white, and green. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: certification paperwork dated May 25, 1984 with a detailed description of the sword. A Japanese document describing the sword and mounts with a photograph of the sword with a red Japanese seal. CONDITION: the blade has a very fine polish and the temper line is very apparent. The entire tsuka shows very light wear. The gold highlights on the darkened metal give an exceptional impression of artistic craftsmanship. The saya shows very light wear overall with some minor losses of gold foil on some of the mon of the scabbard body. Again, the dark and gold contrast on the mounts is quite visually appealing. The saya-maki, ashi, and sageo all show very light wear with the colors remaining crisp and vibrant. Truly an exceptional sword for the advance collector. (02-23630/BF). $5,000-8,000.

JAPANESE BOKUTO KATANA.

Lot # 1435 (Sale Order: 394 of 491)

Please note as of 4/30/25 this item description has been updated. Please revisit this description and contact us with any questions. This katana measures 41” overall with...more a 27 7/8” hardwood blade. An exceptionally finely made example of a bokuto used in training for kenjutsu. These wooden blade katana are first seen during the Muromachi period, and versions of this historic weapon are still used today in martial arts training. This example is exceptionally ornate, featuring an expertly shaped blade with Japanese characters in black ink on both sides. Translation on the blade: The writing on the wood blade, which is called a tsunagi-gaki, attributes the blade that was in these mounts to Dewa Daijo Kunimichi. The longer side reads Dewa Daijo Kunimichi To (katana). The other side is the person who made the attribution--Hon'ami Kozon. Sadly, the blade is broken just above the integral wooden simulated habaki. The break is such that it could likely be repaired by a qualified craftsman. There is a two-piece patinated brass tsuba with gold floral inlays at the tips of chiseled buds. Matching gold-inlaid fuchi and kabuto-gane, along with perfectly matching menuki. Attractive cerulean tsuka-ito over finely patterned brown and tan silk. The saya is a true work of art, with matching gold inlays on all of the mounts, including the ashi. The top of the saya is wrapped with matching cerulean ito together with a black, brown, green, and tan, long, elaborate ito partially covered in fine black-printed white leather forming an elaborate sageo. The saya body is black and gold enamel featuring foliate motifs and crosses within circles. An exceptionally elaborate and visually stunning bokuto katana of absolutely superior craftsmanship. CONDITION: other than the fact the blade is broken above the habaki, the katana shows only the slightest wear throughout. (02-23632/BF). $1,000-2,000.
