JAMES PURDEY BEST DOUBLE RIFLE IN .300 H&H MAG

Lot # 2185 (Sale Order: 185 of 603)

WITH CASE AND FACTORY LETTER. Cal. 300 H&H. S# 22719. According to Purdey factory letter this rifle was finished in 1925 and shipped to Manton & Son, Calcutta. Its origin...moreal caliber was .246 Purdey. Factory records indicate only 13 double rifles were made in this caliber. During the 1970's & 80's a large number of British double rifles were exported from India. At the time .246 ammunition was very hard to come by so most of these rifles were rebored to available calibers; as is the case with this rifle. It was converted to .300 H&H magnum rimless. Bottoms of the 25 1/2" chopper lump barrels are engraved "Rebored by" J. Roberts & Son, London. Barrel flats stamped with remnants of original London .246 proofs and 1981 London reproofs for .300 magnum 2.85" case at 18.5 tons (.300 H&H). Each ejector is fitted with half moon type rimless extractor blade. Barrels are fitted with wide stippled quarter rib holding one standing, two folding leaf express rear sight and turret type front scope base along with rear dovetail for QD type rings. A small silver bead is in matching stippled ramp. Broad mid rib is engraved "J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House. South Audley Street, London. Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth's Fluid Pressed Steel". Bottoms of barrels stamped with S# and barrel maker's initials "GA" (G. Aston). Tube numbers "2835" & "2836" are on loop. (These are very early numbers and the Victorian era barrel maker, G. Aston is not listed in 1912. It is likely that left over barrel sets were utilized in making the 13 rifles in the "new" .246 proprietary cartridge introduced in 1923). Barrels are fitted with sling loop in soldered on base. Case hardened Beesley patent self opening sidelock action features automatic bolted safety ("SAFE" & "BOLTED" are inlaid in gold). Sliding third fastener, side clips, bushed strikers, reinforcing bolsters, raised rib tumbler end cocking indicators, Wem ejector system and double triggers. A seldom seen feature is the folding ghost ring aperture sight made integral with top lever pivot screw. Action engraved with near full coverage Purdey house style small scroll and rose bouquets. Maker's name is on each lockplate and bottom of action over "London". S# is on blued trigger guard tang which extends to engraved steel grip cap. Pistol grip buttstock of lightly streaked and slightly fiddle figured European walnut measures 14 1/4" over silver type pad. Stock features classic drop points, point pattern grip checkering with sweep to back line; a sling loop and vacant silver oval are on toeline. Matching splinter ejector forend with Anson release has Edwardian era actioner's initials "A.F." (Alf Fullalove) on iron. DAH: approx. 2 3/4". DAC: approx. 1 15/16". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14 1/4". WEIGHT: 9 lb. 7oz. without scope. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: rifle is fitted with Zeiss Divari-Z 1.5-6X 30mm rail scope with 3 post reticle. ERA type swing off QD mounts (Rear with windage) are installed. Rifle and scope are housed in what appears to be their original oak and leather case with brass corners and central medallion. Interior is lined in burgundy cloth and a small paper Purdey label is in lid. Bottom compartment has been refitted to accept scope and contains Purdey marked square oil bottle, ebony handled striker key, carrying strap, brass snap caps, bone striker bottle with one spare striker, and relatively new cleaning kit. Paperwork includes: Purdey factory letter, J. Roberts email & ledger page. CONDITION: fine as refurbished. Barrels retaining nearly all of a good quality reblue; action with about 90% new case hardening color, engraving remains clear; stocks with most of a dull oil refinish with some subsequent scratches most on right side of butt; checkering recut. During the rebore/refitting process the front lump was replaced most likely by J. Roberts who states in a letter that they did not fit the scope mounts. (Original lump is in case). Bores are bright and shiny. Mechanically fine. Ejectors in time but rather weak. Scope is fine with some light marks on exterior, optically clear. Case leather is good with scratches, bumps and tape marks. Interior cloth is renewed and remains in fine condition with some rubs. Label is heavily foxed. Accessories are good. PROVENANCE: From the Estate of Jon Thomas. (23-4915/MGM). CURIO. $20,000-30,000.

COL. TOWNSEND WHELEN'S EARLY GRIFFIN & HOWE

Lot # 2186 (Sale Order: 186 of 603)

SPRINGFIELD RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. (30/25 M1?). S# 467. (CA 1925). Col. Townsend Whelen was listed as an advisor in the initial list of officers of the newly formed Griffin &...more Howe company in 1923. This rifle dates to 1925 and was ordered by Col. Whelen to be built for his cousin William B. Whelen. With his cousin's untimely death, Whelen received the rifle back from the widow. This rifle is described and history given in "Mr. Rifleman", Whelen's autobiography where he says in 1955 he had a crossbolt fitted to the rifle as he thought the stock had begun to split. At that time he also had the Lyman scope mounted by G&H. The rifle has 24" barrel fitted with sleeved on front ramp holding gold bead, top of barrel is engraved "NO 467 GRIFFIN & HOWE INC. NEW YORK". (This early rifle was made at the time that the G&H S#'s were assigned by caliber before sequential numbering starting at 500 in 1926). A 1" triangle of scroll engraving is at breech end along with caliber designation ".30/25 M.1." (Cal. .30 1925 Mark 1?) . Action has had tang slimmed, G&H side mount and Lyman 48 bases installed, and top of receiver ring and bridge stippled. There are sprays of scroll on receiver ring and left side of bridge. Bolt has had front portion polished and engine turned, handle is lowered, knob is checkered in two panels. A Buehler safety is installed. Bottom metal is unaltered from military configuration. It is engraved with about 30% coverage well cut shaded scroll surrounding the Whelen family crest on floorplate. Crest consists of two leopards passant on a shield which is surmounted with a Duke's crown and trumpeting swan. This crest is found on other rifles that once belonged to Whelen. Front of floorplate is engraved with Griffin & Howe name and address. This treatment is only found on early G&H rifles. Tripper guard bow is also scroll engraved and this scroll surrounds the gold inlaid initials "WBW". All engraving on this rifle is the work of the noted Rudolph Kornbrath. Steel capped pistol grip stock of lightly marbled European walnut measures 13 7/8" over checkered and engraved steel buttplate with trap. (Oiler in trap). It features early G&H styling with horn forend tip, early type G&H case hardened and engraved grip cap. Very well cut point pattern checkering at grip and around forend. Sling eyes are fitted to toeline and forend. Rifle is mounted with Lyman All-American 4X scope with crosshair reticle in G&H alloy rings and slide. CONDTION: very fine, barrel and action retaining essentially all G&H applied rust blue with later fitting of side mount. Bolt handle lowered at this time with new channel cut in stock. Bottom metal retains about 90% of what appears to be its original rust blue, silvering on edges. Stock retains nearly all of what appears to be its original hand rubbed oil finish with a scattering of light marks, checkering is lightly worn, as mentioned before a crossbolt was installed and a 1" crack is found in front of bottom metal running toward forend checkering. Scope is very fine with a few marks on exterior, optically clear. Bore is bright, sharp and shiny, mechanically fine, rear sight staff is missing. PROVENANCE: Rifle was sold at April 2016 Amoskeag Auction for almost $15,000. (23-4783/MGM). CURIO. $8,000-12,000.

RUDOLPH KORNBRATH ENGRAVED AND GOLD INLAID

Lot # 2187 (Sale Order: 187 of 603)

EARLY GRIFFIN & HOWE SPRINGFIELD SPORTING RIFLE WITH SCOPE. Cal. 30-06. S# 817. (CA 1928). A major part of Griffin & Howe's early work was the conversion of NRA Springfie...moreld rifles into first class sporters. The work ranged from reshaping and checkering the standard "C Type" stock provided, to a complete reworking with fine embellishment as is the case with this fine rifle. The original 24" star gauge barrel has had sling eye and front sight ramp with gold bead sleeved on. Top of barrel is engraved "No. 817 GRIFFIN & HOWE inc. NEW YORK". Action has had tang reshaped, numbers removed, receiver ring stippled, G&H side mount installed. Original Lyman 48 base has blank slide fitted. Bolt has body polished and damascened, bolt knob is checkered, bottom flattened. Cocking knob is removed giving faster lock time. Military trigger is retained. Bottom metal is unaltered. Barrel, bolt handle, receiver sight base and bottom metal are all engraved by noted master engraver Rudolph Kornbrath; prolific independent engraver who specialized in work on firearms. He emigrated to Hartford, CT in 1910 and worked until he suffered a stroke in 1937. He worked for Colt, Hoffman and private people, as well as doing the preponderance of work for Griffin & Howe in their early years. Barrel has triangle of relief scroll at rear and some scroll decoration around front sight. Top of sling eye band is engraved to match. Receiver itself is not engraved but Lyman base is near fully engraved. Bolt handle is fully relief engraved with some acanthus and rose blossoms which are essentially a Kornbrath signature. Bottom metal is near fully engraved with intricate relief scroll and some ribbons which surround circular vignettes of game animals in relief gold. The center of floorplate depicts a bugling elk on a hilltop, center of trigger guard bow has the portrait of a mountain goat. This scene is flanked by more blossoms. Steel grip cap with trap is engraved to match. Pistol grip stock made of a very fine piece of well figured and marbled European walnut measures 13 1/8" over checkered and engraved steel buttplate with trap (empty). The stock is of the style thought to be the work of Seymour Griffin with its distinctive small cheek piece with shadow line on edge. Stock also features horn forend tip, sling eye, and well cut point pattern checkering around grip and forend. A gold oval engraved with crossed keys is on toeline. Rifle is mounted with what appears to be its original R. Noske 2 1/2 X "Hunter" scope with picket post reticle in steel G&H rings and slide (rear with micrometer adjustment for windage). CONDITION: fine, metal parts retain most of their factory rust blue, thinning overall and with some minor splotches on barrel. Damascening on bolt is bright, stock retains most of an old oil refinish, with a fair number of subsequent marks. Checkering is lightly worn and somewhat clogged with oil. Bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling throughout, mechanically fine. Scope has some rubs and scratches on its exterior blue, optically clear. (22-5797/MGM). CURIO. $5,000-8,000.

EARLY GRIFFIN & HOWE SPRINGFIELD 400 WHELEN RIFLE

Lot # 2188 (Sale Order: 188 of 603)

WITH TOWNSEND WHELEN'S LOADING TOOLS. Cal. 400 Whelen. S# 951470. At first glance this rifle appears to be the one pictured in Mike Petrov's "Custom Gunmakers of the 20th...more Century" Vol. 2 pg. 153. There are, however, several differences including the G&H barrel number which on this rifle is "201". The pictured rifle is "202", the second 400 Whelen made after G&H started assigning numbers by caliber. The rifle for sale here is the first. It has 24" 1/3" round 2/3" octagon ribbed barrel without rear sights or band. Gold bead front sight is in integral ramp. Milled out portion on top of rib is engraved "No. 201 Griffin & Howe, Inc. New York". Model 1903 Springfield action "951470" is unaltered except for installation of Lyman 48 receiver sight and flattening and checkering of bolt knob. Military trigger is retained and bottom metal is unaltered. Stock of lightly streaked and fiddle figured European walnut measures 14 3/8" over checkered steel buttplate with trap (compartment is empty). Stock features early style G&H double shadow line cheekpiece, horn grip cap, schnabled tip, and sling eyes. Distinctive borderless checkering at grip and around forend has rounded pattern and small fleur-de-lis intrusions. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: rifle is accompanied by an armory type walnut box with rectangular plate on top marked ".400 WHELEN RIFLE" "ACCESSORIES" "TOWNSEND WHELEN" "1922". Box contains a custom made cleaning rod, 2 steel drop tubes for powder, copper funnel, marked and dated sizing die, matching case length and seating die and a box of 20 - 1936 National Match .030M1 cartridges. This reloading set appears to be the one Mike Petrov borrowed while working on loads on his G&H 400, (barrel No. "202"). Reloading set is pictured in his book). It is possible that this particular rifle was made for Townsend Whelen although there are no markings on it that indicate this. Further research could be interesting. CONDITION: fine as lightly refinished. Metal parts with nearly all correct rust re-blue, screw and bolt stop are temper blued. Stock retains over 90% of an oil refinish over a few heavy marks and a good scattering of light subsequent marks. Bore is very fine, shiny with sharp rifling throughout, mechanically fine. (22-5790/MGM). CURIO. $3,500-5,500.

ELMER KEITH'S CUSTOM RIFLE BY IVOR HENRICKSEN ON

Lot # 2192 (Sale Order: 192 of 603)

MAGNUM SQUARE BRIDGE MAUSER ACTION SOURCED FROM HALGER RIFLE #85 WITH SCOPE AND BOOK "HELL I WAS THERE" BY KEITH. Cal. 338 Win. Mag. S# 85. Mauser# 93048 (bottom of actio...moren). The 338 Winchester Magnum was developed to duplicate the ballistics of the 333 OKH as designed by Charles O'Neil, Elmer Keith, and Don Hopkins. It was Keith's favorite round for heavy game and he was instrumental in having Winchester introduce the 338 in 1958. This rifle has 24" lightweight sporter barrel marked "HENRICKSEN" around top of breech end (Ivor Henricksen was Elmer Keith's favorite firearms craftsman and he made quite a few rifles for Keith). Magnum Mauser square bridge action with stipled receiver ring is marked "Halger No 85" on sidewall. The Halger firm produced very expensive hyper velocity rifles during the late 20s / early 30s. The 280 Halger HV magnum was essentially the 280 Ross on steroids with velocities of approaching 4,000 ft. per second with 100 gr. bullets. This rifle is marked "Halger 280 HV Magnum" on top of sidewall. With the powders available at the time, chamber pressures for the Halger magnums were around 60,000 PSI and it is said that Mauser made a special action to handle it. Bottom of this action is stamped with Mauser serial number and "65/6887" on area behind recoil lug. Lug itself is stamped with Mauser logo. Case hardened bolt has had handle lowered. A Buehler low scope safety has been fitted. Action retains original Halger single set trigger and bottom metal has hinged straddle floorplate with retaining button in trigger guard bow. Horn capped pistol grip stock made of a dense piece of attractively fiddle figured American walnut measures 13 3/8" over "NOSHOC" pad and features Elmer Keith design Monte Carlo right hand cheekpiece, schnabled forend tip, recoil bolt and well cut swept pattern checkering around grip and on either side of forend. Right side of grip has raised oval area giving a palm swell which is carved with the letter "K". This feature is found on a few rifles known to have been made for Elmer Keith. The initials "IH" are stamped in interior of stock under receiver ring and boltstop. Action is fitted with an unmarked what appears to be Weaver 4x scope with dual range crosshair reticle. As a gun writer, Keith may have been given this prototype scope to assess. Scope is in Buehler rings and bases. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: signed first edition book "Hell I Was There" with letter from Elmer Keith to consignor. CONDITION: very fine as custom finished. Barrel retaining essentially all rust blue. Action and bottom metal retain most of their original French gray. Bright temper blue remains on boltstop and floorplate release button. Stock retains nearly all of its original rubbed oil finish with a few minor marks and scratches. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically fine. Scope is also fine, optically clear. Book is good showing some wrinkles and foxing. Dust jacket with some rubs and tatters. Previous owner has stated that her "uncle hunted with Elmer Keith in Alaska and bought this rifle from him. And that it is pictured in some of Keith’s books." There are many photos in "Hell I Was There" that depict a dead ringer for this rifle; Keith's 333 OKH Mauser. The best photo is on page 205. Elmer Keith's personal Smith & Wesson revolver sold for over $20,000 in 2015. PROVENANCE: From the Estate of Jon Thomas. (23-1645/MGM). CURIO. $8,000-16,000.
