SADDLE RING CIVIL WAR CARBINE. Cal. 54. S# 2181. First models were nicknamed the "grapevine" carbine because of the snake like curves of the trigger guard lever & long ro...moreunded ungainly hammer. These earliest carbines were purchased by the state of Illinois in 1863 and mostly issued to the 5th and 6th Illinois cavalry. Many of these early carbines have a secondary number stamped on barrel and frame, "146" on this one. Standard configuration of lever operated falling block action, 20" barrel. Frame stamped "UNION / RIFLE" and lock "GWYN & CAMPBELL / PATENTED / 1862 / HAMILTON, O". CONDITION: good overall. All matching S#'s, complete & original. Metal overall is cleaned and pitted patina. Markings are all discernable but "UNION RIFLE" and serial worn. Stock is refinished with no visible cartouche. Mechanically fine, good dark rifled bore. (01-27165/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,800.

SCARCE 1ST MODEL 1862 SHARPS & HANKINS ARMY

CARBINE, CONFEDERATE C&R "Q" MARKED. Cal. 54. S# 696. Standard configuration with 24" barrel, sliding breech mechanism, Brass buttplate. Bottom of butt between sling swiv...moreel and leave her plate stamped with capital "Q" which is consistent with other arms cleaned and repaired at the Richmond Armory in 1864 & 1865. First model carbines are scarce to start with firing pin attached to hammer face, this is the only Confederate captured C&R S&H Army carbine documented. CONDITION: good overall, complete other than chip missing at top of butt plate and top butt plate screw, iron has dark patina with pitting, patent and make her marks have been cleaned to bring out on either side of frame. Top plate has toned patina, mechanically fine, good rifled bore. (01-27164/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.

CONDITION: very good overall, though missing leather cover probably since use. Frame is silver/gray patina with crisp markings. Barrel is brown patina. Cal. 52. S# 3031. 5000 of this improved rimfire carbine were made and delivered to army in 1865, most after hostilities but continued in service for occupation forces. Ca...morerbine is mostly identical to 1863 percussion version with 21" barrel, Starr address on top & lock"STARR ARMS CO / YONKERS NY" & patent on rear of breech. Design was modified to incorporate cartridge firing pin, cartridge extractor, & with a redesigned shorter straight hammer. This example is iron-mounted, with all correct sights and markings. CONDITION: good to very good overall. Metal is cleaned & overall a mottled gray scattered staining & pitting, markings all crisp & easily discerned except barrel address with is worn and barely discerned. Stocks refinished with old varnish finish. Mechanics fine, good rifled bore. (01-27239/JS). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.

Carved into left side of butt stock "C C James" which is attributed to Private CC James, 20th Battalion Georgia Cavalry. Georgia had a quantity of Sharps in state armory when war began and most issued to Savannah units. 20th Battalion was stationed in Savannah and was discharged from Savannah. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of CC James service records. CONDITION: good overall. Metal grey toned patina, markings worn, stocks sound, mechanics fine, good rifled bore. (01-27007/JS). CARBINE. Cal 52. S# 15001. Standard brass mounted configuration, 37.75" overall, 21.5" barrel, adjustable long range rear sight, brass blade front sight, "SHARPS /PATENT ...more/ 1852" on lock, "SHARPS / PATENT / 1848" on back of frame and S# on tang, 9" long saddle bar. Famously nicknamed "John Brown" Sharps, as many shipped to Kansas Abolitionists May 1855, one John Brown shipped carbine was close in S# to subject, 15012. Many guns in this serial range (14800-15100) were issued to 1st California cavalry, and 1st & 2nd NY Veteran cavalry regiments. Consecutive S# 15000 was issued to 2nd NYV cavalry in 1864 from National Archives records. CONDITION: good to very good overall, all original and matching, honest well used example. Barrel overall has gray/plum patina, traces of case color on frame, smooth cleaned brass. Mechanics are fine, but Maynard capping device missing cover screws and spring, not functional, crisp rifled bore. (01-27010/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,500-3,500.

IN ATLANTA CAMPAIGN. Musket is 1863 dated William Muir contract 1861 rifled musket. Musket is in good complete and original "as found" condition with dark iron patina. Th...moree three diaries are for 1863, 1864, and 1865. They give details of the daily movements and actions from January 1863 to July 1865. Good details regarding the 12th Army Corps and the 29th Ohio in particular from the battle of Lookout Mountain, Union camps at Bridgeport and Stevenson Alabama, early actions in Georgia at the beginning of the Atlanta campaign, into Atlanta, and the March to the sea, into South Carolina and North Carolina, war's end, and private Benham's muster out and going home to Cleveland. The 1863 diary is all in ink, 1864 and 65 are in pencil, but all easily read and overall good condition considering these were carried throughout the war. Also included is his 1868 diary. CONDITION: good to very good overall, musket has Civil War over the shoulder strap used as loose fitting sling. (01-27276/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.

Forend w/ three split bands. Smooth tulip head ramrod. Stock is marked on left panel w/ faint inspector's cartouche. CONDITION: stock has been cleaned, leaving light wear, slight loss of wood & numerous handling marks. Small crack at rear of lockplate & behind front lock screw on left side. Stock has worn finish showing numerous scratches, marks, and small dents. Right side of stock has a small crack behind the lockplate. Sound lock and trigger. SHORTENED S. NORRIS AND W. T. CLEMENT MASS

CONTRACT MODEL 1861 RIFLED MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 27 1/4". Approx. 3,000 of these rifles were contracted by the state of Massachusetts & used to arm their troops sent...more to the Civil War. This rifle has been shortened to cadet length. Bore has been reamed smooth and rear sight removed. Front sight is tiny inverted "V" at muzzle. Barrel has indistinct "VP" proofs. Bevelled lockplate w/ 1861 hammer is marked "S.N. & W.T.C. FOR MASSACHUSETTS". The lock carries the eagle over "US" & "1863" date. "US" marked buttplate. Marked on left side w/ very faint inspector's mark in oval. Bottom swivels. Replacement ramrod. Flat lower band w/ oval upper band. Both retained by springs. Walnut stock has been shortened & the stock tip relocated rearward. Buttstock is marked on right side w/ the name "W.H. NICHOLS" done with small brass brads. CONDITION: stock was given an early arsenal rework finish w/ slight loss of wood in inletted areas w/ extensive wear & handling marks. There are a number of cracks on both sides in breech area, one of which is on the left side & extends approx. 6" into the grip area. 3" crack behind the lower band at the bottom of the stock. Ramrod channel has notable chipping issues. Metal has turned overall patina w/ oxidation & fine pitting. Cleanout screw is broken flush w/ bolster. Lock has hobbyist gunsmith type repairs w/ Phillip's head screws & incorrect springs. Dark oxidized bore. (01-27019/RW). ANTIQUE. $300-450.

PERCUSSION NAVY REVOLVER. Cal. 36. S# 1226. This is a stunning fancy engraved revolver with gold inlays and fanciful presentation on backstrap. This revolver manufactured...more in 1861 has been totally refinished with custom engraving, gold inlaid relief portrait of Samuel colt on the left barrel lug, fancifully inscribed on grip frame: "To H E Dimick St. Louis, Mo. from Sam Colt". Standard configuration 1861 Navy revolver, 7.5" barrel, "Sam'l Colt" inset in gold script on top, smooth elephant tusk grips. Modern mahogany compartmented casing houses revolver, reproduction navy sized eagle flask, engraved and reblued "COLTS PATENT" 2-cavity mold army mold, and modern cap tin. CONDITION: excellent as customized, retains almost all of the bright blue and case color finish. Backstrap and trigger guard retain virtually all of their custom gold plating. Mechanics are fine, dark rifled bore. (01-26737/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-4,000.

It is among the highest serial numbers noted still with earlier loading lever screw entering from right...more side opposite side of frame & barrel lug screws, small non-beveled "V" notch loading aperture in barrel lug, otherwise standard 3rd model features: 7.5" octagonal barrel, brass pin front sight, 1-line New York address, brass backstrap & triggerguard, small "COLTS PATENT" stamped on left side of frame, varnished walnut grip. CONDITION: very good overall, all original & matching, overall mottled gray patina, crisp markings, grips retain 90% of their original factory varnish. Mechanically fine, crisp rifled bore. Blue finished bbl. and cyl., with case colored frame, h...moreammer, and loading lever. Silver finished brass backstrap and large rnd. trigger guard. 1-piece walnut grip. Mfg. in 1868. CONDITION: bbl. retains 30% fading blue, showing edge wear, with small dents and spots of light pitting. Cyl. has faded to gray, retaining visible scene. Frame, hammer, and loading lever show 30% lightly fading case colors. Brass grip straps have a small amount of silver remaining in protected areas. Grips have spots of peeling original finish, showing scratches and handling marks. Action is tight and sound. Bore is generally bright with sound rifling, showing small spots of light pitting. Custom engraved and plated in New York style after manufacture and ivory grips. Presentation plaque on casing lid is not old as are the initials and "CSA" on grips. CONDITION: very good as refinished and plated, gold on cylinder, hammer, and rammer about 30%, silver is 80% plus. Mechanics need attention, cylinder does not advance when cocked, good rifled bore with scattered areas of pitting. Custom case is very good with brass reproduction flask and reworked 2-cavity mold. Cal. 36. S# 108777. Standard configuration of early 1861 manufactured Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver, 7.5" octagonal barrel, one line New York address, left side of frame ...morestamped "COLTS PATENT". This was the most popular privately purchased sidearm at the beginning of the Civil War by soldiers both North and South. Accompanying holster made in military style apparently from scraps, reminiscent of Confederate necessity accoutrements. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Colt factory letter stating shipped to Schuyler Hartley and Graham, NYC August 2, 1861 as one of 200 revolvers. CONDITION: good to very good overall, all matching serial numbers, wedge is numbered 4727, barrel & cylinder have mottled gray/brown patina with light pitting, crisp one line New York City address, cylinder scene is about half discernible, traces of silver on brass, ivory grips well fit at frame but shrunk away from back edge. Standard configuration made prior to Civil War in 1858, 4" octagonal barrel with 2-line "ADDRESS SAML COLT / NEW YORK CITY" address, small "...moreCOLT'S / PATENT" right side of frame, stagecoach holdup scene rolled 6-shot cylinder. Brass trigger guard and backstrap hold varnished walnut grips. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: hand drawn colored collection card by Roger Ballard. CONDITION: very good overall, all matching and complete, most of "stagecoach holdup" cylinder scene visible, dark plum/gray metal, traces of finish in protected areas.
