OUTSTANDING CONFEDERATE LEMAT SECOND MODEL

Lot # 3001 (Sale Order: 1 of 609)

GRAPESHOT REVOLVER. Cal. 42/18 Ga. S# 1952. Bbl. 6 3/4" octagon above a 5 7/8" round bbl. beneath. Upper bbl. is used with the 9 shot cylinder to fire 42 cal. ammo. Top f...morelat of bbl. is marked with a panel that reads, “Systeme Le Mat Bte s.g.d.g. Paris”. The right flat of the bbl. is marked "1952” with the star over “LM” proof. There is a small stamp on the left flat of the octagon barrel that reads "W. DUNCAN". This may be the owner of the gun or perhaps a retailer's mark. All numbered parts of this fine pistol match completely. Lower bbl. is used for firing a single charge of buckshot. 9 Shot revolving cylinder, with associated loading lever, on left side of bbl. The hammer is fitted with a pivoting striker to accommodate the 9 cylinder nipples along with a single nipple at the top of the frame to fire the buckshot bbl. 2 Piece, fine checkered walnut grips with lanyard loop at the buttcap. Dr. Jean Alexandre Francois Lemat from New Orleans, LA, patented this type of revolver in 1856. He was originally business partners with P.G.T. Beauregard, who was to become one of the most famous Confederate generals of the war. The LeMat revolver was made from 1856-1865 with a total quantity produced of less than 2,900 examples. At the outbreak of the Civil War, it quickly became the most favored sidearm of many high ranking Confederate officers & officials. Captured examples were coveted & prized by Union officers as well. CONDITION: likely one of the finest known examples of this coveted revolver. This LeMat retains 70-80% of original blued finish. The markings on the top of the bbl. remain crisp, sharp & easily read. The backstrap & hammer retain a pleasing gray brown patina. As frequently seen on many LeMat revolvers, the loading lever was broken during use. The lever was repaired by a very skilled gunsmith and matches exactly the original profile of the lever. The lever was then professionally reblued to closely match the existing finish. Screws show minimal wear & scratches. The nipples retain substantial original finish. Grips show expected wear but retain crisp checkering. Mechanics seem to function quite well. The bore of revolver barrel is outstanding, showing only the slightest wear, even the chambers of the cylinder show insignificant wear. Shotgun bore is equally crisp. This exceptional LeMat was obviously used & carried, but has managed to remain one of the finest examples of this rare & desirable pistol on the collector’s market. (01-20805/BF). $28,000-38,000.

CONFEDERATE BRASS FRAMED SPILLER & BURR REVOLVER.

Lot # 3002 (Sale Order: 2 of 609)

Classic Confederate brass frame copy of a Whitney made in Atlanta, GA. S# 203. Bbl. 7" octagonal marked "SPILLER & BURR". Left side of frame has final government inspecti...moreon "C.S." Cylinder is also serial numbered which is rarely seen and is an indication based on recent research that the cylinder was replaced at the armory after failure. Revolver was part of the 2nd lot of Spiller & Burr's produced about Sept. 1863 in Atlanta, GA. At some point, the gun failed and was reissued in Macon, GA in 1864. There are about 300 revolvers issued from Macon with known serial numbers. The cylinder pin on this revolver is 284 and is one of the known Macon issues. It’s quite common on Macon issued guns to have small parts from other Spiller revolvers. Mixed numbers never occur on Atlanta revolvers that never failed (which are rare). UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: there is my current article on Spiller & Burr manufacturing linked here and printed copy accompanying this lot. CONDITION: good overall, this revolver saw hard service like most Confederate revolvers and likely was returned to armory after field failure more than once based on markings. Revolver is original and complete with exception of loading lever arm and catch, which are replacements. Brass cone sight has been smashed flat, but still present. The frame has medium mustard patina and braised repair to top strap. Even the thumb bolt on this revolver is original with the small stamped “O” for “Open”. Iron overall is mottled dark gray with pitting. Twist in the cylinder unique to Georgia brass framed revolvers is distinct. Grips are original, though heavily worn. The “W” inspection on bottom of right grip is dented but discernable. Revolver is functional, though sloppy and timing is off. Bore is well shot, dark, and pitted but still with discernable rifling. PROVENANCE: John Mattox, stated this gun had been on display in sporting’s good store in Denver since the 1950s; Dr. Fred Novy, 2004. (01-20291/JS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-25,000.

Stagecoach holdup cylinder scenes crisp. Mechanically fine, bright rifled bores. Casing is fine internally, warped lid with crack, double eagle flask, brass 2-cavity mold, and cap tin with label are matching fine condition. FRESH, RARE & “AS FOUND” CONFEDERATE RISING BREECH

Lot # 3005 (Sale Order: 5 of 609)

SADDLE RING CARBINE FROM DIRECT DESCENT OF CAPTAIN THOMAS HALL MCKOY, 7th NC INFANTRY, VETERAN OF GETTYSBURG. S# 80, Cal. 54. This is among the rarest & most desirable of...more Confederate carbines. Only 100 were made by Bilharz & Hall of Pittsylvania Court House, Virginia & delivered to CS government September 16, 1862. Candidus Bilharz was the principal in their manufacture and was naturalized from Baden, Germany not long in the US before war. This is another of the high-grade Confederate arms made by German-Americans who were trained mechanics before immigration. This breech-loading carbine is of unique function not found in any U.S. or C.S. patent, very well made & designed. 21” rnd bbl proofed at breech “P/CS”, unique heavy long iron lever is bowed, acting as trigger guard. Forward portion of lever attaches to hinged plate at rear of frame, which actuates the “rising” breech-block. The tail of lever terminates in semicircle that latches to catch completing circle. To raise the breech for loading, lever must be lowered almost 90 degrees to move breech vertically. Murphy and Madaus in their text “Confederate Carbines & Musketoons” have a detailed chapter on this rarity. Of the roughly 20 survivors, this most recently discovered example is an outstanding survivor from direct family descent of Confederate officer Thomas H. McKoy. He joined the Wilmington Light Infantry in April of 1861 as a lieutenant and quickly rose through the ranks to Captain and Major in what was eventually designated part of the 7th N. C. Infantry (Branch’s, Law’s and Lane’s Brigade) throughout the war. The 7th served during most of the well-known battles of the Army of Northern Virginia to include Seven Days, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spottsylvania and eventually surrendered a detachment of 1 Officer and 18 men at Appomattox from a unit that recorded over 1600 members during its rolls. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Notarized letter identifying this carbine was the property of Thomas Hall McKoy. Also small research file on Capt. McKoy.. CONDITION: NRA Very Good, but Fine to Very Fine for this rare model overall. This gun would appeal to the most astute and discerning collectors of Confederate Arms. Carbine appears to be 100% original, complete, matching and untouched. “As found” dark and smooth iron patina w/ light pitting around breech, markings including proofs "CS/P" all discernible. Pinched front sight & 3-leaf adjustable rear sight complete. Stocks are sound, well fit, hand worn patina, mechanically fine, very fine rifled bore with much of its original shine remaining. (01-20932/JS). ANTIQUE. $40,000-60,000.

FINE CONFEDERATE BILHARZ MUZZLELOADING CARBINE.

Cal. 68. S# 70. This example is of a rare Confederate carbine made in Pittsylvania Courthouse, VA. This gun is a copy of the US Model 1855 carbine.
