SCARCE DOCUMENTED WINCHESTER 1876 EXPRESS "TIGER

Lot # 4050 (Sale Order: 50 of 532)

RIFLE". Cal. 50-95 Express. S# 37758. Bbl. 22" round with blade front sight & sporting rear. According to Herbert Houze in THE WINCHESTER MODEL 1876 CENTENNIAL RIFLE", ou...moret of the 3,284 Model 1876 rifles manufactured in this caliber, a scant 1,196 were made with 22" round bbls. This configuration was popular amongst Tiger hunters as the shorter overall length and weight was easier to wield, making target acquisition much quicker, which is important in the event that an angry 600 lb feline comes charging out of the bushes! Another benefit the model 1876 had over traditional large bore double rifles was that the user had five shots instead of two. These rifles which were were shipped to great Britain for export to India, this gun features British crown proofs on left side of bbl. along with "38". Single British proof is viewed at front left of receiver. Dust cover sits atop integral rail & is marked "WINCHESTER EXPRESS / .50 CAL 95 GRS." Bottom of carrier block marked "50-95". Top of bbl. marked "50/ CAL". Smooth walnut forend and straight grip stock with steel shotgun buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Portion of Winchester factory record's check confirming the following: "SERIAL NUMBER 37758 / Type: Rifle / Caliber: Express / Barrel Type: Round / Barrel Length: 22 inches / Trigger: Plain / 1/2 Magazine / Shotgun butt / Received in warehouse December 05, 1883 / Shipped from warehouse on December 05, 1883. CONDITION: good overall. Receiver & bbl. retain some original blue in protected areas. Balance has faded to brown & patina with scattered areas of cleaned pitting. Forend cap, hammer & lever retain faint traces of original case colors. Loading gate retains approx. 10% original nitre blue. Action screws show slight damage from improper screwdriver use. Stock set is solid and appears to have been lightly cleaned with added coat of varnish over numerous light to moderate dents & scratches. Very good bore, appearing mostly bright shiny with sharp rifling, having scattered spots of oxidation. A fine honest example of a hunting rifle that was used but not abused displaying wear consistent with what one would expect to see in a more humid locale. (01-26875/BH). ANTIQUE. $6,000-9,000.
