Colt Woodsman Match Target .22 LR

Lot # 128 (Sale Order: 152 of 984)

SN: MT11569. This is the desirable Colt First Series "Match Target" Woodsman pistol as manufactured in 1941. This pistol was the first in the series of the true match pistols that were produced as a more accurate Woodsman pistol. This pistol is fitted with the very desirable "elephant ear" elongated wrap around walnut grips with checkering and Colt silver medallions. These original "elephant ear" grips were fragile as the elongated bottom edges usually cracked and broke off, thus their survival rate is low. These series of pistols have the slab sided, heavy weight barrel that is marked on top "COLT'S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A . / PAT. DES.110. 887" with the adjustable Kelly type blade front sight and adjustable target rear. The left side of the barrel has the large circular target with the words "MATCH" and " TARGET" above and below the target, next to "THE WOODSMAN" on the frame. The left side of the slide is marked "COLT", and "AUTOMATIC / CAL. .22 LONG RIFLE" with the Rampant Colt directly behind the markings. It has the correct blued Colt Match Target magazine that is marked on the bottom "COLT WOODSMAN / CAL. 22 L.R. / MATCH TARGET MOD."The pistol retains at least 97% bright original blue finish with some thinning on the muzzle, some high edge wear and thinning. There are a few very light scratches around the muzzle. The bore is excellent bright, action is crisp/smooth, and the grips are excellent. The pistol comes in the original Colt factory blue cardboard box with instruction manual, period Colt brochure for Woodsman pistols available at the time, and the the rarely seen test target with serial number matched to this pistol. Tested by "J. Molloy". The three main target shooters for Colt in that era were J. Henry Fitzgerald, Jim Malloy, and Ed Kiely. The three of them had been targeting guns together since 1920. By the way, the test target has 5 rounds in the bullseye. The factory box has tears, & separations. NRA Condition-Excellent. C&R Firearm.
