Springfield Armory M1 Garand 30-06 #332345

Lot # 49 (Sale Order: 52 of 644)

Semiautomatic US Military rifle manufactured circa 1941. Features 24" barrel, protected blade front & protected peep rear adjustable sights, fixed magazine accepts 8 round en-bloc clips, manual safety, sling swivels, trap door buttplate. Observed parts (including sights, milled triggerguard, square cut op rod, part numbers on various parts) are early variants consistent with early manufacture date. Bore is very good condition. Gas cylinder has good coverage of black paint finish used on early examples. Barrel also appears painted, or to have dark black parkerizing with a slightly scaly appearance, with "8-41" date and other markings difficult to read from thick finish filling the marks. Receiver has dark black color, slightly glossy, with appearance of bluing, which is sometimes seen on early examples. Forward part of receiver appears to have paint or similar, with some small chips from this finish, revealing dark gray color beneath. Left side of receiver top edge has a section of rough pitting and erosion of sharp corner edge, underneath current black finish. Receiver has smaller individual pits in several places on receiver sides. Clip latch shows pitting throughout exposed surface, color matches receiver. Op rod and other parts (including magazine internals) have similar semi-gloss black color. Bottom metal and bolt appear dark parkerized, brushed appearance to metal on magazine cover. Forward visible portion of triggerguard has rough surface finish and some erosion or light strikes of part number. Stock bands are black, appearing blued. Wood is very good condition, many tiny dings from handling, handguards match stock, with some fancy figure on lower portion of butt along toe line. Wood finish appears slightly glossy. No cartouches observed in wood. Includes fair condition leather two hook sling (steel hooks & rivets, parkerized metal). Includes letter from previous owner with story about this rifle's history. Condition is NRA Very Good *** C&R Firearm *** [From the Jim Sigmon Collection]

German G98/K98k Conversion "SS" 8mm SN: 855

Lot # 59 (Sale Order: 64 of 644)

Rifle. Bolt-Action. This is an ultra rare SS conversion of a WW1 Gewehr 98 Infantry rifle to a K98k. This rifle was acquired by Poland after WW1 for use by the Polish military. (Polish Eagle acceptance stamp on the left receiver ring, and "Z" in circle on bolt knob, which is a Polish refurbishment mark). These rifles were acquired from many different sources, but the Poles reparations after the war included Danzig's ordnance facilities. When Germany acquired these rifles back they converted them to the K98k configuration. Especially the SS-Vt, and the Waffen SS, which did not access to Wehrmacht stores at the time. This rifle has two Totenkoff "Deaths head" skulls stamped on the left side of the barrel one with a "Lazy S" over one, (Most of the "Lazy S" skull reports are from the 1938 time frame) with the other having "SS" runes followed by "2". Some sorces say this is The stamp of the SS-Waffenwerkstatt , Dachau in 1941-42 when many reworked G98/K98 rifles were sent back to be reworked further with bent bolts and front spring conversions. Maybe why there are no Waffenamts. Receiver ring has been scrubbed, as the Poles did with Gew.98's. Imperial German proofs on the receiver ring, floorplate, and triggerguard. Gothic "GEW 98." stamped on the left receiver rail. "St.M.G 14.6 gr" stamped on the left receiver ring (Feint) , which means it was test fired with a 14.6 gr Steel-jacketed bullet, when it started out as a Gew.98. Fitted with an Erma Barrel. Barrel stamped "DO 3 29-37 ERMA" in two lines on the barrel behind the rear sight. Behind this is what appears to be a waffenamt style eagle eagle over stamped with an "8". Serial number is matching on the receiver ring, front barrel band, magazine follower, bolt release, triggerguard, floorplate, Rear sight, and the stock . Located on the underside forward of the buttplate. (Feint) The rear sight base is stamped with a "K". "36" is stamped on the front of the bolt sleeve, and on the bolt release after the serial number. The "55" on the serial number has been double stamped on the floorplate, and front "H" style barrel band. The front triggerguard screw is stamped "03", and the rear is stamped "21". There are some markings on the underside of the turned down bolt handle I can't make out. "7.92" stamped rear barrel ring. Left side of bolt knob is flat/serrated. Wood is very good with the usual minor scratches/dings. There is area behind the triggerguard that has been plugged with wood where the Gew.98 sling swivel was. "855" is written in pencil, and stamped in the barrel channel. Correct issue sling. Cleaning rod present. Bore appears dark/dirty but has strong rifling. Action is crisp/tight. Unmarked steel buttplate. Blued finish is about 50%, rear of barrel, and the receiver are in the white. Underside of lower barrel is blued. Imperial German proofs present on underside of barrel. Triggerguard and floorplate have turned a gray patina with minor surface rust. Cleaning rod present. Correct issue sling. Note* There is a lot of further information on the SS Skulls on K98kforum.com under "Lets talk SS Deaths Heads". NRA Condition- Good. C&R Firearm.
