Lithograph by Joe De Yong

Lot # 338a (Sale Order: 454 of 900)

"Crow Woman" 21/50 signed lower right. Image measures 6 1/8"x 4 7/8" with a single mat in a gold and natural wood frame. A painter and sculptor of Indian and western subjects, Joe De Yong was born in Webster Grove, Missouri, and was raised in Indian territory. As a teenager he learned fancy roping from Will Rogers and earned his living as a cowboy including working with Tom Mix in making westerns. De Yong had deafness due to childhood spinal meningitis and became an expert at Indian sign language. As an artist, he was primarily self taught, and his greatest influence was Charles Russell during the time he worked in Russell's studio from 1916 to 1926 in Montana. Russell and his wife became very close to De Yong and treated him like a member of the family, and after Russell's death in 1926, De Yong became his "artistic heir and guardian of his creative legacy". (Hassrick, 146). Through the Russells, De Yong became friends with Howard Eaton, whose family had ranches in Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, and because of this connection De Yong spent much time painting in these locations, going first to Yellowstone in 1920. He later moved to California where he worked as a technical advisor in the movie industry and lived in Pasadena and Santa Barbara.

Original Oil on Paper by Cathy A. Smith

Lot # 343a (Sale Order: 463 of 900)

Indian Chief portrait in small gold wood frame. Signed on lower right of frame and on back of painting. Image measures 2 3/4" x 2 1/4". Cathy Smith grew up on a ranch in western South Dakota, bordering two Sioux reservations, led to her relentless pursuit of authentic, traditional Native American art forms, design, and techniques – which have become a much sought after commodity for everyone from museum curators to international collectors to Hollywood producers. Cathy has spent her lifetime participating in the ceremonies and cultural life-ways of relatives on the Cheyenne River Reservation and refining her skills in the sacred art of porcupine quillwork “Maintaining these traditional arts is imperative as they are a part of our American heritage in danger of being lost. Not only are they beautiful and useable, but when made with integrity, they are imbued with power & spiritual meaning.” Cathy lectures on the art & culture of the Western Plains at museums and events, from the Smithsonian to Christy’s in NYC. She has consulted on a majority of the Western genre films (Dances with Wolves) of the past 20 years and exhibited at the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame and the Charlie Russell Show, among others. She restores original artifacts for museums & collectors and creates custom clothing and accoutrements not only for film and museums, but for clients worldwide.
