Special Order Winchester Deluxe First Model 1873 Rifle

Lot # 1004 (Sale Order: 5 of 695)

Special Order Winchester Deluxe First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letter states the rifle had an octagon barrel, set trigger, casehardened receiver and XX checkered stock when it was received in the warehouse on October 13, 1875 and shipped the same day. This rifle has the First Model receiver with dust cover with checkered oval finger grip. The dust cover is secured by grooved guides on either side of the receiver rather than the central rail used on later Model 1873 rifles and carbines. This rifle has several special order features that include deluxe, fancy grade walnut stock and forearm, checkered panels on the forearm and stock wrist, color casehardened receiver and single set trigger. The 24-inch full octagon barrel has the standard sporting style front sight with nickel silver blade and sporting style buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a rear sight. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866.OCTOBER 16. 1860" ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "MODEl 1873." in fancy letters. The serial number is marked in script numerals between the lever latch and rear stand screw. The barrel and cartridge elevator lack the caliber markings found on later production Model 1873 rifles. The barrel, full-length magazine and loading gate cover are blued, and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are nicely figured, fancy grade American walnut with a piano finish. The stock and forearm have the early style checkering with straight lines parallel to the receiver.

Class: Antique

Fine. 50% of the original blue finish is present on the barrel with some edge wear and minor dents and scratches. The barrel legend is crisp. The blue finish on the magazine is thin with some silvering on contact points. The case colors on the forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, hammer, trigger, and lever have faded to a silver gray patina. The top and forward portion of both sides of the receiver have a number of scattered, shallow dents. The crescent buttplate has patches of dark age discoloration with shallow pitting on the heel and toe. The brass cartridge elevator and buttplate trapdoor have a good-looking, untouched patina. The lever latch is missing. The stock and forearm are both in fine condition, with minor scratches and handling marks. The checkered panels show moderate handling wear. This is a nice example of a early production, deluxe, special order Winchester First Model 1873 lever action rifle.

The musket has the distinctive 30-inch round barrel with full length forearm secured by three barrel bands, steel block front sight that serves as a mount for a socket bayonet, sling swivels on the middle barrel band and stock and military style folding leaf rear sight. This musket is one of a 700 gun lot of Model 1873 Muskets in the 569,000-57,1000 serial number range that were shipped to Central America in September 1903. In the late 1950s, some of these muskets were discovered in storage in Nicaragua and imported to the U.S. These muskets were generally unissued and unfired and remained in nearly new condition. Provenance: Gillespie collection.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent. This musket is all original and retains 97% of the original blue and color casehardened finish with very minor storage wear. The blue components have nearly all of the blue finish intact with a few scattered light scratches and handling marks on the barrel bands, receiver and side plates. The hammer, lever and trigger have nearly all of the muted case colors intact. The buttplate has some finish loss on the heel and toe. The loading gate retains nearly 100% of the fire blue finish. The oil-finished walnut stock and forearm are in excellent plus condition and retain 98% of the original oil finish. Wear is limited to a few storage bruises located primarily on the left side of the forearm. This is an excellent example of a scarce Winchester Model 1873 Musket in near new condition.

Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1866 Rifle

Lot # 1008 (Sale Order: 9 of 695)

Factory Panel Scene Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

Manufactured in 1871. This deluxe Model 1866 is factory engraved with six panel scenes on the receiver. The right side plate features a dangerous game scene that has gone horribly wrong for a frontiersman who is being mauled by a grizzly bear. The rifle’s mate, serial number 79868, which is only one number away from this rifle, bears a strikingly similar macabre dangerous game panel scene (see R.L. Wilson’s “Winchester Engraving” on page 111). Number 79868 features a left side plate scene depicting a native being devoured by a crocodile while two other natives watch helplessly. As R.L. Wilson put it, “Lacking a trusty Winchester, the natives on the left side plate are apparently resigned to watching their friend vanish into the gullet of the voracious crocodile.” On 79869 the crocodile has been replaced with a grizzly bear but while the onlookers on 79868 are helpless, there are certainly no helpless onlookers in the attacking grizzly bear scene. A hunter in the background takes aim at the grizzly with his “trusty Winchester” in a desperate attempt to save the pinned down man. 79868 bears (no pun intended) the signature of Master Engraver Conrad F. Ulrich. While this rifle lacks a signature, the analogous “morbidly humorous” scene on 79868, coupled with the single digit difference in serial numbers, gives rise to the strong possibility that Conrad Ulrich also engraved this Model 1866. C. Ulrich was no stranger to engraving macabre scenes on Model 1866s and additional examples attributed to him include numbers 46022 (attacking African lion), 46035 (gunfight between a frontiersman and Native Americans), 79860 (decapitated moose with a hunter walking away with the head), and 80492 (attacking tigers). Rock Island Auction Co. previously sold 79868 in the November 2012 Premier Auction as lot 1012. The other vignettes on this rifle depict a rooster on both sides at the rear, a dog on the right side and an eagle/shield motif on the left side. The left side plate has a pair of deer. In addition to the panel scenes the receiver features floral scrollwork on a punch dot background and various stylized borders. The forend cap and buttplate tang are engraved to match. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking ahead of the rear sight. The dovetail blade and flip up rear sights are replacements. A sling eyelet is mounted on the forend cap, and a sling swivel is mounted on the underside of the buttstock. The forearm and straight grip stock are deluxe “XX” checkered walnut. The left side of the lower tang is hand marked "XX" followed by a stamped “OXX.” The stock inlet and trapdoor buttplate are numbered to the gun (“79869”). The left side of the upper tang is period hand marked “Wed 10th $20.00,” perhaps an indication to the engraving date and cost. Includes a four piece cleaning rod.

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel and magazine tube exhibit a mottled brown-gray patina. Slight traces of original gold remain in the lines of the crisp engraving, otherwise the brass has a highly attractive even honey colored appearance. The non-factory replacement wood is fine with some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A fine work of Winchester’s “morbidly humorous” art done in the last half of the 19th century sure to find a special place in your lever action or firearms art collection.

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 1010 (Sale Order: 11 of 695)

Retailer Engraved Half Nickel Plated Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

This carbine was manufactured in 1870 and subsequently retailer period engraved and nickel plated on all parts except for the barrel and magazine tube. The engraving patterns are similar to "Unique Trio of Winchester 1866 Carbines" (47830, 48505, and 49157) on pages 315-320 in "Armsand Armor Annual Volume One" by Robert Held. Those carbines were also manufactured in 1870 and were purchased in Santiago, Chile, nearly a century later in 1968 and were originally in two-tier case with a St. Lousi retailer label. Held notes that all three were done by different hands but around the same time. This carbine was also clearly from a different hand. The sides of the receiver featured floral scroll and floral patterns with scallop bordering, there are simple scroll and line designs on top of the receiver and wedges of floral scroll on the upper and lower tang, underside of the receiver, on the bottom of the cartridge elevator, buttplate tang and on each side of the barrel bands. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two line address/patent dates and the serial number is on the lower tang. Class: Antique

Very fine as period retailer engraved and nickel plated with 90% of the nickel finish remaining showing some scattered minor flaking and pin point blistering. The barrel and magazine tube retain 30% original thin blue finish mixed with a dark patina. There is a small amount of minor oxidation on the magazine tube. The wood is good overall, the forearm has been lightly sanded and revarnished, showing three small gouges on the underside, and numerous scattered minor dents, dings and scratches on the buttstock. The markings are clear, the engraving is crisp and the action is fine. Mechanically fine.

It is rare to find a Winchester 1886 rifle with "two" special order features, as the majority of the time if the previous owner ordered any special features, they usually choose several.

Class: Antique

Fine with 50% of the blued finish remaining overall with the round portion of the barrel having taken on an aged purplish/blue tint with minor light nicks and dings overall on the exposed part of the barrel. Panel Scene Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Carbine

Lot # 1016 (Sale Order: 17 of 695)

Attractive Panel Scene Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Carbine

This attractive '66 was manufactured in 1887 and was subsequently elaborately engraved with four highly detailed game scenes as well as fine scroll and border engraving with punched backgrounds. The letter confirms it was a carbine received in the warehouse on April 19, 1887, and shipped out on November 11, 1887, with 29 other Winchesters in order number 1642. The barrel and barrel bands have scroll engraving. The frame has a running elk in a wooded scene on the right along with a fleeing buck in another detailed wooded scene, a pair of running big horn rams in a mountain scene on the left, and a pronghorn buck in another mountainous scene near the front. The rest of the frame has intricate classic scroll engraving along with ornate border designs. Coordinating scroll patterns are also on the heel of the buttplate. The barrel has a block blade front sight fitted just behind the front barrel band, an 1873 pattern notch and ladder rear sight, "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CT." in italics over an apparently hand marked "KING'S IMPROVEMENT - PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." and "44 CAL RF" in a panel amongst the engraving at the breech. The magazine tube is slightly longer than the barrel. The frame has been fitted with a centerfire bolt and a saddle ring. The elevator is marked "44 CAL." The lower tang has the serial number between the lever screw and rear screw and "44" on the left under the stock. "44" is also on the inside of the buttplate at the toe. The stock has "30303" in the upper tang mortise. The consignor's collection tag notes "PAGET CAVALRY." Unfortunately no additional documentation is available detailing this reference. There was a cavalry brigade under General Sir Arthur Henry Fitzroy Paget known as the Paget Cavalry during the Second Boer War. However, there are no visible English proofs on the carbine suggesting it has never been to England.

Class: Antique

Fine as professionally custom embellished with very crisp and attractive engraving throughout, some blue finish on the top of the barrel and otherwise a mix of brown patina and artificial brown on the barrel and magazine tube, attractive aged patina on the brass, dark brown patina on the lever, patches of minor pitting, and general mild wear. The replacement wood is also fine and has mild scratches and dings and edge wear. Elevator needs work, otherwise mechanically fine. This is a very attractive Winchester Model 1866 with highly detailed engraving from an unidentified very talented engraver complete with a variety of game animals from the American West.

The barrel is stamped with the two-line address/patent date marking ahead of the rear sight on the top flat and "25-20 W.C.F." on the upper left flat at the breech. Winchester expert and author George Madis calculated, "Only 1 of each 700 model 92's had pistol grips; only one of each 800 hand checkering or carving. When you consider the comparative rarity of many Winchesters, it is not surprising that all Winchesters are so eagerly collected." This Model 1892 is pictured and identified in Madis' "The Winchester Book" on page 376 where "the stock [of] two inches longer than standard" is noted. Madis states, "Special stocks, available longer, shorter or offset, were offered for all Winchester models and were made in limited numbers."

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very good, retaining 40% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. 75% original niter blue remains on the loading gate. Traces of original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. There are some scattered patches of pitting which have been touched up with artificial brown. The wood is very good with a series of chips on the forearm (left side), number of minor dings and scratches and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. A seldom encountered deluxe Model 1892 with extra length stock and double set triggers missing from even the most advanced Winchester collections.

This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that lists the original date of manufacture for this Model 1876 as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: Express, Barrel Type: Round", and "Trigger: Plain". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on November 26, 1889. The rifle has the Third Model receiver with integral dust cover guide rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges. The top of the dust cover is marked: "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/.50 CAL. 95 GRS." in two lines. The loading gate has 70% of the nitre blue finish. The hammer and lever retain 70% of the muted case colors. The barrel and receiver markings are clear. The stock and forearm are both in very fine condition with nearly all the original finish. Exhibition Quality Maximilian Winchester Model 1866 Carbine

Lot # 1022 (Sale Order: 23 of 695)

Extremely Well-Documented, Historically Significant, Museum Quality L.D. Nimschke Exhibition Engraved and Relief Carved 19th Century Masterpiece Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Impeccable Provenance Including the Collection of Mexican President Porfirio Diaz

Certainly one of the finest Winchester firearms ever produced, this Model 1866 carbine has been an icon in the field of fine arms collecting for over half a century and has been widely photographed and discussed during those many decades. Simply known as the Maximilian Carbine, it is a crown jewel of Winchester collecting; a beautiful work of art that gun collectors usually can only fantasize about owning. We are here to tell you that you can stop dreaming. The crème de la crème has arrived! Over the decades this renowned Winchester classic has been documented in numerous publications. According to firearms author R.L. Wilson, “No. 21921 holds the present record for being published the most of any 19th century Winchester.” One look at this extraordinary work of art and it is easy to understand why so many writers wanted to document the arm in their works. These publications range from seminal reference books to inspiring hobbyist magazines, and those publications known to us include John Parsons’ “The First Winchester” (page 139), Howard Blackmore’s “Guns and Rifles of the World” (plate 693), R.L. Wilson’s “The Book of Winchester Engraving” page 79), “Winchester an American Legend” (pages 28-29), “Steel Canvas” (page 159), “American Arms Collectors Percussion Colts and Their Rivals” (page xxii), "Fine Antique Arms Annual" (page 97) and “The History and Art of the American Gun” (page 159), Frank Sellers’ “The William M. Locke Collection” (page 505), the No. 69 September 1960 issue of “Texas Gun Collectors Magazine,” front cover to the July 1963 issue of “The Gun Report,” and the November/December 1979 and January/February 1981 issues of “Man at Arms.” This is only a short list as there are many other publications featuring this carbine and there will certainly be many more in the future. One of the most famous photographs in print is Fern Solley, wife of John Solley, sitting outdoors on a Queen Anne settee surrounded by arms from her husband’s famous collection. The Emperor Maximilian Model 1866 carbine sits at her feet. The carbine was loaned to Winchester for a display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1946 and was displayed at the Centennial Exhibition at PepsiCo Company in New York City in 1966. The carbine was awarded the coveted NRA Silver Medal No. 5 as issued in 1960, the first year for this NRA competition. The accompanying 20 page letter by R.L. Wilson details much of the history. In the words of Wilson, this carbine is “traditionally attributed as having been created for the Emperor Maximilian and documented from the arms collection of Mexican President Porfirio Diaz.” According to the serial number ranges established by George Madis, this carbine no. 21921 was manufactured in 1869, or 2 years after Maximilian was executed by a firing squad on June 19, 1867. As we and I’m sure many of you have discovered, Madis’ dates are speculative and have been proven incorrect when other source material and documentation are considered. There are no factory records for early Model 1866s to confirm shipment dates, leaving us to speculate if the gun was made to order by Maximilian and delivered prior or after his death. The theory that this carbine was owned by Maximilian is supported by the fact that another Model 1866 no. 46002 with Mexican eagle carved stock in the Museo Nacional de Historia (National Museum of History) in Chapultepec, Mexico, is identified as belonging to General Miguel Miramon, who was a key associate of Maximilian. The general and the Emperor were both executed on June 19, 1867. As Wilson puts it, “With General Miramon having a presentation and relief carved Mexican eagle stocked Winchester Model 1866 begs the question: Why wouldn’t the Emperor Maximilian have been presented a similar Winchester[?] The likelihood is that serial no, 21921 is the Winchester Model 1866 of the Emperor Maximilian as has been the tradition associated with this extraordinary Winchester for decades.” Nevertheless, the carbine is firmly traced to Mexican President Porfirio Diaz. Diaz became president of Mexico in 1877 and for over 30 years he was basically a dictator. He resigned in 1911 and moved to Paris where he died in 1915. He was also a prolific firearms collector and some of his most stunning pieces are documented in “The Book of Winchester Engraving” and “The Colt Heritage.” The carbine could have reasonably been built for Diaz as he was already a powerful figure in Mexico. The Porfirio Diaz collection was acquired by Walter Douglas, who donated most of the collection to the Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario
