New Haven Arms Co. First Model Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1025 (Sale Order: 26 of 719)

Highly Desirable Civil War New Haven Arms Co. First Model Henry Lever Action Rifle Attributed to the 93rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry

Offered here is a desirable First Model Henry rifle that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1863 and attributed to a Civil War Ohio infantry regiment. Early features include the sight dovetail on the brass receiver and brass trapdoor buttplate with rounded heel. The barrel is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards (elevation bar absent) and is stamped "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO. NEWHAVEN.CT." ahead of the rear sight and the serial number “1593” at the breech. Matching serial numbers appear on the barrel, left side of the lower tang, stock inlet, both buttplate screws and buttplate. The rifle is fitted with a sling hook loop and a sling swivel on the left side of the buttstock. A highly desirable original four piece hickory cleaning rod is included n the butt. Experts believe that most of the 7,500 Henry rifles manufactured between April 1862 and January 1865 were purchased for use in the Civil War and saw some military service. Aside from 900 rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department in 1863-1864 to arm the 1st D.C. Cavalry Regiment, nearly all Henry Rifles used in the Civil War were privately purchased by soldiers who wanted to have the most advanced firearm available and take advantage of the sustained firepower of a 15-shot magazine rifle. As a result, the great majority of the Henry rifles under serial number 7,500 show moderate to heavy wear. This Henry, however, is in well above average condition. Henry Rifles manufactured during the Civil War with any original finish are very rare. According to the consignor, this Henry Rifle was acquired by an antique dealer in central Ohio from the descendants of Union solider George S. Hamilton, Company G, 93rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The family story was that this Henry was sent to their home in Preble County after George Hamilton’s death at a Nashville, Tennessee, hospital on 19 August 1863. The online National Park Service Civil War soldiers and sailors database does confirm Private George S. Hamilton as serving with Company G, 93rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The 3 June 1864 issue of The Fremont Weekly Journal listed George Hamilton as a casualty with a wound to the thigh. He was not listed as killed in action. Civil War casualty newspaper reports were notoriously filled with outdated information as a death record for George Hamilton lists his death date as August 19, 1863 and his gravesite located in Preble County, Ohio. George S. Hamilton is without a doubt a confirmed Union private with the 93rd Ohio Infantry. The Henry rifle was especially popular with soldiers from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky who purchased many of the rifles from New Haven Arms Co. dealers located in Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio. It would therefore seem very probable that Hamilton got his hands on a Henry. The 93rd Ohio Infantry was organized at Dayton, Ohio, mustered in service in August 1862 under the command of Colonel Charles Anderson, and mustered out of service at Nashville, Tennessee, in June 1865. The 93rd Ohio participated in the Battle of Stones River, Tullahoma Campaign, Battle of Chickamauga, Siege of Chattanooga, Battle of Missionary Ridge, Atlanta Campaign, Battle of Resaca, Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Battle of Peachtree Creek, Siege of Atlanta, Battle of Jonesboro, Second Battle of Franklin, and Battle of Nashville. The regiment lost a total of 217 men during service. Interestingly, the Henry Rifle serialized one digit before this rifle, no. 1592, is reported as being issued to the 3rd Regiment U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry (see W. Sword's "The Historic Henry Rifle," page 75).

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel and magazine retain 40% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. The very fine brass has a highly attractive untouched dark aged appearance. The receiver side plates are tight fitting. The stock is also fine with minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A highly desirable, well above average condition Civil War New Haven Arms Co. First Model Henry Rifle with the added bonus of being attributed to a member of the 93rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. A must have for the serious Civil War or lever action collector!

Inscribed Deluxe Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Rifle with Factory Letter

The included factory letter lists this rifle as being 38 caliber with a 26 inch octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock (does not mention shotgun butt, though the lower tang marking does), and case hardened receiver when it was received in the warehouse on December 8, 1882 before being shipped the next day in order 1320. This is a nice special order deluxe Winchester Second Model 1873 rifle that was manufactured in 1882. The butt of the stock is marked "8", which is repeated on the inside of the buttplate. The barrel is equipped with dovetailed blade front and adjustable rear sporting sights. Blue barrel and magazine tube and casehardened remaining parts. There is an iron forend cap on the forearm and a flat iron shotgun buttplate. The buttplate is inscribed "J.C. Barber/from/Sedalia Gun Club/1883". J.C. Barber was one of the founding members of the Sedalia Gun Club established in September of 1880. The club was established after the Sedalia Sporting Club, established in 1875, grew too big and members broke off to form the new club. The club continued to work with the other club in the preservation of game and the prosecution of law violators.

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel and magazine has 40% plus original blue with the balance a smooth mottled brown patina with minor spotting on the magazine tube. The receiver retains 20% of the original faded case colors, bright in the area around the trigger on the lower tang, with smooth silver gray on the balance. The lever has a smooth dark patina. The hammer retains 40% original dark case colors. The wood is also fine with overall scattered minor dings and scratches, a hairline crack in the right of the wrist, and crisp checkering. Crisp and clear markings. Mechanically excellent. Looks like it just came out of an attic, untouched!

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1027 (Sale Order: 28 of 719)

Desirable Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

The Model 1866 or "improved Henry" was one of the earliest and most widely used repeating rifles in the American West and saw use in conflicts over land, gold, and other resources on the frontier in the second half of the 19th century in the hands of settlers, Native Americans, outlaws, lawmen, and hunters. It is the direct descendant of the Henry rifle and traces its lineage back to earlier repeaters like the Volcanic. This rifle was manufactured in 1889. The barrel has the two-line Winchester address/King's improvement patent marking, a replacement front dovetail blade sight and an elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight. The serial number is stamped behind the lever latch. The buttstock is fitted with a trapdoor iron buttplate (cleaning rod not included).

Class: Antique

Very good overall as radiating a classic "been there, done that" appearance consistent with use on the frontier. The barrel and magazine have a mixture of gray and dark patinas. The receiver has an attractive mellow aged patina. The aged darkened buttplate is pitted. The wood proudly wears authentic wear and scaring from authentic use. Mechanically excellent. A Winchester Model 1866 with appealing "working gun" character.

Arturo Rojas Relief Engraved Winchester Model 1894 Carbine

Manufactured in 1912. This carbine has been subsequently ornately engraved by Arturo Rojas of Dallas, Texas. The bottom of the frame is signed "PRIMITIVO ROJAS H. GRABADOR." The carbine features game scenes on both sides of the receiver. The left side features two elk surrounded by a floral pattern while the right side depicts a hunter aiming a fleeing deer. The top of the bolt and receiver, as well as the lever and floorplate have also been embellished with a floral scrollwork pattern. A hound game scene is depicted on the buttplate. The foregrip and stock set have also been hand carved by Rojas. The foregrip and wrist have been given a floral scrollwork. The carving on the left side of the stock is a depiction of the Mexican eagle. The stock's pistol grip has been carved into the shape of a roaring lion that stares back at the shooter. Many of Rojas' rifles feature an animal head carved into them. The ornate designs on the rifle follow Rojas' design philosophy which comes out of respect for the firearm. In an interview he stated, " The gun, thanks to it, we have certain freedoms. But it lacks, lets call it, good taste. A custom gun looks pretty. It removes the ugliness."

Montana Cattle Baron's Smith & Wesson 32 Single Action Revolver

Lot # 1048 (Sale Order: 49 of 719)

Documented Montana Cattle Baron Owned Smith & Wesson .32 Single Action Revolver with Box and Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letter states the revolver was shipped on May 26, 1878 and delivered to M.W. Robinson of New York City. Comes with a correct period box. The included statement of provenance certifies that the revolver was once part of the Conrad Warren estate and was "owned by Johnny Bielenberg, the half brother and business partner of Conrad Kohrs in his cattle business based on Cotton Wood Creek at Deer Lodge, Montana." The Kohrs-Warren family was associated with the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site at Deer Lodge, Montana. As perfectly explained on the National Park Service website, "Wide open spaces, the hard-working cowboy, his spirited cow pony, and vast herds of cattle are among the strongest symbols of the American West. Once the headquarters of a 10 million acre cattle empire, Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site preserves these symbols and commemorates the role of cattlemen in American history." Kohrs and Bielenberg were among the first cattle ranchers to recover from the disastrous winter of 1886-1887 that left tens of thousands of head of cattle dead. The recovery included the adaptation of modern ranching methods such as purchasing purebred breeding stock, raising and storing feed and fencing. Kohrs earned the nickname "Montana's Cattle King". The ranch was authorized as a National Park in 1972.

Class: Antique

Excellent, retaining 98% plus original nickel finish with slight muzzle wear and some minor handling marks. 97% original case colors remain on the hammer. Mechanically excellent. The box is fine showing some fading and wear. The grips are fine with a scrape on the left panel and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. As the personal property of a noted Montana cattle baron who aided in the modernization of cattle ranching, this .32 Single Action Revolver will add dimension to any S&W or American frontier collection.
