The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "40-82 WCF" at the breech. The lower tang is stamped with the two-line patent dates marking and the serial number. The "H" style checkered forearm and pistol grip stock are XX deluxe walnut. The pistol grip has a Winchester hard rubber cap, and the Winchester shotgun buttplate is hard rubber. The left side of the lower tang is marked "949 XX RB." The assembly number "949" is repeated on the stock inlet. Includes a letter of authenticity signed by Tom Selleck confirming it is from his personal collection.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 70% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. 95% original blue remains on the bolt. 40% of original niter blue remains on the loading gate. The remaining surfaces retain 90% original case colors. The wood is fine showing an overcoat of varnish, a couple small chips at the tangs, a few minor handling marks and crisp recut checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. A highly attractive, sought after example of a casehardened deluxe Model 1886 rifle that will be a welcome addition to any Winchester collection. Provenance: The Tom Selleck Collection

Cased and Engraved, Smith & Wesson No. 1 Lever Action Pistol

Lot # 3026 (Sale Order: 27 of 626)

Exceptional, Factory Cased and Engraved, Smith & Wesson No. 1 Lever Action Repeating Pistol

Rare factory cased, small frame Smith & Wesson No. 1 Lever Action Repeating Pistol. The pistol has the distinctive part round/part octagon barrel with integral magazine, loading lever with finger loop and two-piece, bag-shaped, rosewood grips. The barrel/magazine has a crowned muzzle, rounded T-bar spring, pinch-back front sight blade and steel, clam-shell magazine follower. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "SMITH & WESSON/NORWICH CT." in two lines and the lower left barrel flat is roll-stamped: "PATENT/FEB. 14. 1854" in two lines. The receiver has a loading lever without finger spur, flattened cylinder rear sight, small notch at the front of the ejection port and internal retaining spring with no visible screws. The serial number "D73" is stamped on the left side of the frame beneath the grip and on the bottom of the toggle mechanism. "73" is stamped on the inside of both grips. The top and sides of the receiver and back strap, side plates and back of the hammer are decorated with the standard S&W floral factory engraving. The barrel and magazine are browned, the frame and lever have a high polish blue finish and the hammer is color casehardened. The rosewood grips have a high polish piano finish. The pistol has a walnut, American style, case with a brass plate inlaid in the lid. The case is lined with Navy blue velvet and has three compartments including an ammunition compartment with lid. The case is identical to the Smith & Wesson factory cases pictured on page 86 of "VOLCANIC FIREARMS" by Lewis and Rutter. The ammunition compartment contains twenty-eight, .31 caliber Volcanic cartridges.

Class: Antique

Very fine. This pistol is in exceptional condition and retains much of the original brown and bright blue finish on the barrel/magazine and receiver. The original brown finish on the barrel/magazine is 85% intact with some wear at the muzzle and some thinning along the magazine spring slot. The barrel markings are sharp. The receiver has 60% of the bright original high polish blue finish with loss on the edges and contact points. Significant amounts of nitre blue finish are present on protected areas of the lever, bolt and cartridge elevator. The hammer retains most of the original muted case colors. The simple but well executed factory engraving is crisp and sharp. The grips are very fine with 85% of the original piano finish and a few insignificant handling marks. The factory case remains in very fine condition. The exterior shows minimal handling wear. The blue velvet lining is bright and clean. There is no fading and wear is limited to some compression marks and one small tear from contact with the pistol high points. Smith & Wesson Volcanic pistols are rarely found with any of the delicate blue finish present of the receiver. The brown finish on the barrel and magazine has usually aged to a dark patina. This pistol retains an exceptional amount of the original brown and blue finish and is one of the very few known examples with an original factory case. This is one of the finest factory cased Smith & Wesson No. 1 Lever Action Repeating Pistols extant. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.

The sides and top of the frame and back strap and the back of the hammer are decorated with the standard S&W open scroll engraving. The barrel is browned, the frame is blued and the hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The two-piece, rosewood, grips have a high polish piano finish. Smith & Wesson manufactured approximately 700 No. 1 Repeating Pistols. An additional 500 No. 1 Repeating pistols were assembled by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in 1855-57 using parts acquired from Smith & Wesson.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine. This scarce, early production No.1 Repeating Pistol is all original and retains 60% of the blue and casehardened finish. The crisp original brown finish on the barrel is 85% intact and has faded slightly to an attractive plum color. The barrel edges are sharp, metal surfaces are smooth and the barrel markings are crisp. The frame retains 20% of the delicate blue finish in protected areas; the balance is a smooth silver-gray patina. The simple but well-executed factory scroll engraving is crisp and deep. The barrel spring, bolt and rear sight retain traces of the original fire blue finish. The hammer has 80% of the original case colors. The case colors on the lever and trigger have faded to a mottled silver-gray. The grips are in very fine condition and retain 85% of the original piano finish with a few insignificant handling marks. Silver Trim Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Rifle

Lot # 3028 (Sale Order: 29 of 626)

Extraordinary Documented Factory Silver Trim Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action .45-90 Rifle with Winchester Gun Museum Letter

The accompanying Winchester Gun Museum letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .45-90 caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, "silver trims," and Lyman front and rear sights when shipped on February 9, 1895 (no mention of inscription, possibly a factory record oversight as writer believes the inscription is factory). The rifle is pictured and identified in George Madis' "The Winchester Book" on page 332. The inscription on the left side of the receiver reads in large bold font, "Fred R. Hoisington/1895 FROM J.M.F." The rifle is equipped with a dovetail beaded blade Lyman front sight, elevation adjustable rear sight, and folding tang peep sight. The barrel is stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "45-90 WCF" at the breech on the top flat. The lower tang has the two-line patent dates marking and the serial number. The rifle has the highly sought after factory two-tone finish (blue and silver). The barrel, magazine tube and bolt are blued. The receiver, forend cap and buttplate are plated in silver. The half silver finish is a very rare Winchester special order feature, rarer than full nickel finish. The highly figured walnut forearm and pistol grip stock are checkered. The buttstock has an ebony grip insert and a solid crescent buttplate. Frederick Reed Hoisington (1868-1951) was born in Ohio and was one of seven children born to a Sri Lankan father and mother from New York. He was the father of five children and later lived in the State of New York where he died at the age of 82 in 1951.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The barrel and magazine tube retain 95% original blue finish. There is a small patch of pitting on the magazine tube towards the muzzle (left side). 95% original blue remains on the bolt. 98% plus attractive age darkened original silver plating remains on the forend cap, receiver, and buttplate. The inscription is crisp. 70% original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. Some original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The wood is also very fine with a repaired sliver at the upper tang, some minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Most of the finish remains. Mechanically excellent. A rare factory silver trim deluxe Model 1886 rifle with interesting period, possibly factory inscription that will add dimension to the most advanced Winchester collections!

Civil War U.S. Contract, Martially Inspected Henry Rifle

Lot # 3029 (Sale Order: 30 of 626)

Desirable Civil War U.S. Contract, Martially Inspected Henry Lever Action Rifle

This Henry lever action rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in November 1863 as part of an 800 rifle order by the Ordnance Department. The Ordnance Department purchased 800 Henry rifles from the New Haven Arms Co., to arm the 1st D.C. Cavalry regiment on December 30, 1863. The Henry rifles in this 800-gun order were in the 3000-4000 serial number range, inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector Charles G. Chapman and stamped with his "C.G.C" inspection mark. The 800 C.G.C. inspected rifles were the only Henry rifles stamped with Ordnance inspection marks and the 1st D.C. Cavalry was the only Federal unit completely equipped with Henry rifles during the Civil War. This rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver and octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. The barrel has a nickel-silver, square-back front sight blade, folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch and elevation bar stop screw and thick brass magazine follower. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the first style, two-line legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT" ahead of the rear sight. This first style legend, utilized until around serial number 4000, is slightly smaller than the second style legend and uses block letters for "NEWHAVEN" in the address. The second style brass receiver lacks the rear sight dove-tail found on earlier Henry receivers. The bottom of the receiver has the beveled magazine follower cut-out typical of Henry receivers in this serial number range. The hammer has coarse, hand-cut, knurling on the spur. The straight grain walnut stock has a varnished semi-gloss finish and is fitted with the first style buttplate with rounded heel. The buttplate has a hinged trap door. The left side of the stock and barrel are not fitted with the sling swivel and screw-fastened loop for a sling hook which were extra cost items for Henry rifles in this serial number range. The Ordnance "C.G.C." inspection mark is visible on the right barrel flat at the junction with the receiver. The "H" factory sub-inspection mark of B. Tyler Henry is stamped on the barrel flat immediately below the "C.G.C." stamp and on the edge of the receiver adjacent to the barrel inspection marks. A "C" Ordnance sub-inspection mark is stamped on the right corner of the buttplate heel. The encircled, script, "CGC" final inspection mark usually stamped on the right stock wrist of U.S. contract Henry rifles is not visible. The serial number "3422" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver and on the lower left barrel tang beneath the stock. The serial number "3424" is stamped on the inside of the buttplate below the lower screw hole, in the upper tang inlet of the stock and on the shanks of the hand-fitted buttplate screws. The cap screws on the receiver tang are, correctly, not serial-numbered. The two-digit variation in the barrel and receiver serial numbers and stock, buttplate and buttplate screw serial numbers probably indicates that the stock was switched at the factory during the Ordnance inspection and re-assembly process. The top of the receiver is neatly hand-stamped: "W.F.GILBERT. 1870." in block letters. The bolt has been period converted to a center-fire firing pin and the magazine follower is a period replacement. The 1st D.C. Cavalry originally served as the provost force for the District of Columbia responsible directly to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. The regiment was subsequently ordered to suppress Confederate partisan rangers operating in Northern Virginia commanded by Lieutenant Colonel John S. Mosby. In the spring of 1864 ,the 1st D.C. Cavalry was assigned to the Army of the Potomac and participated in the Overland Campaign and Siege of Petersburg. Significant numbers of 1st D.C. Cavalry Henry rifles were captured and re-issued by Confederate forces during the final months of the Civil War. Experts believe that most of the Henry rifles manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company between April and 1862 and April 1865 were privately purchased by individual Federal soldiers who appreciated the advanced design and superior firepower of the Henry rifle. However, the Ordnance Department purchased only 1,731 Henry rifles during the war. Of these rifles, only the 800 Henry rifles purchased to arm the 1st D.C. Cavalry in December 1863 were fully inspected and marked with the Ordnance "C.G.C." inspection mark. At least 127 of the Henry rifles issued to the 1st D.C. Cavalry were purchased by discharged veterans when they mustered out of Federal service at the end of the Civil War.

Class: Antique

Good. This rifle shows wear typical of a military firearm that saw combat service with subsequent post Civil War modifications. The barrel and magazine have a d

Winchester Deluxe Model 1887 Shotgun Serial No. 3

Lot # 3032 (Sale Order: 33 of 626)

Rare Single Digit Serial Number 3 Winchester Deluxe Model 1887 Lever Action Shotgun

Offered here is serial number 3 of Winchester's first highly successful repeating shotgun, the Model 1887. This first day production Model 1887 is made even more desirable by being in highly sought after deluxe configuration. 64,855 were manufactured in 1887-1901. Most prior shotguns were single or double barrel break actions. The Model 1887 held six shots and could be fired rapidly. It is no surprise that this fine arm was based on designs by John M. Browning given his long and productive relationship with Winchester. Production of this model began just two years after Browning sold his single shot design to Winchester. The Model 1887 built upon the solid reputation of Winchester’s lever action rifles and carbines that were already in widespread use throughout the country. Many Model 1887s replaced double barrel coach guns used by "shotgun messengers" employed by express companies and lawmen throughout the country. Cochise County Sheriff John Horton Slaughter is known to have been fond of these six shot repeaters. The Damascus barrel is fitted with a single bead front sight. The left side of the frame has the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. monogram, and the lower tang bears the Winchester address/patent dates marking. The shotgun correctly lacks a gauge marking as the gauge was not marked on the barrel until after the 3000 serial number range. The deluxe walnut forearm and round knob pistol grip stock features checkering. The buttstock is fitted with a checkered steel buttplate. The sides of the tangs are unmarked. The stock inlet is stamped with the number "6" or "9." Serial number 3 sets the record as the earliest Model 1887 we have sold. This title was previously held by no. 13 (lot 3052 in our December 2019 Premier Firearms Auction). Serial no. 1 was engraved by John Ulrich, presented by automobile tycoon Henry Ford to automobile tire giant Harvey Firestone and today is part of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West collection. The whereabouts of serial no. 2 are unknown to us.

Class: Antique

Very good. Overall the shotgun has a pleasant smooth brown appearance with the receiver retaining traces of age darkened original blue in the protected areas and much of the strong Damascus pattern remaining on the barrel. The wood is also very good with a hairline crack at the buttplate, smooth checkering and minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Do not miss your chance to acquire, quite possibly, the earliest known Model 1887 available to the public. A true survivor of the lasting legacy of Winchester's lever action shotguns!
