CT./KING'S - IMPROVEMENT - PATENTED - MARCH 29, 1866. OCTOBER 16, 1860.-" ahead of the rear sight and ".50 CAL." at the breech. Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine. The rifle retains 80% plus bright original blue finish with the balance thinning to a smooth plum patina and flaking of blue on the dust cover. 50% of the original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. There are a few areas on the barrel and magazine tube of cleaned dark oxidation. The hammer and lever retain 50% of the original case colors with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The buttplate has a mottled gray patina with a few areas of minor oxidation. The wood is very fine with much of the original oil finish, raised grain and some scattered minor dings and dents. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.

Winchester First Model 1876 "Open Top" Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3003 (Sale Order: 4 of 671)

Winchester First Model 1876 "Open Top" Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

This rifle has the seldom seen open top frame whereas the later Model 1876s had dust covers. Only around 3,000 were produced out of the total of 63,871 manufactured between 1876 and 1897. This example was manufactured in 1878. The non-factory shortened barrel is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and an elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight and is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking ahead of the rear sight. The rifle correctly lacks a caliber designation as early production Model 1876s were offered in only in .45-75 WCF. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1876." Other early features include the large hammer and buttplate with large toe. The action is equipped with a special order single set trigger. The trapdoor buttplate contains a four piece cleaning rod. The accompanying factory letter confirm the 24 inch octagon barrel and set trigger. The rifle was received in the warehouse on June 28, 1878 and shipped the next day.

Class: Antique

Very good, retaining traces of original blue finish in the protected areas, otherwise the rifle has a mottled brown patina. Slight traces of original nitre blue finish remain on the loading gate. The wood is also very good with a hairline stress crack at the upper tang and minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A scarcity in lever action arms collecting, a Winchester First Model 1876 "Open Top" Rifle.

Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 3006 (Sale Order: 7 of 671)

Desirable, Fine and Rare Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letter confirms the carbine configuration in .45-70 caliber and states the carbine was received in the warehouse on March 14, 1907 and shipped on August 19, 1907. According to research conducted by John T. Madl and presented in the summer 2018 issue of The Winchester Collector, Winchester only manufactured 1,911 Model 1886 carbines chambered in .45-70 caliber. The barrel is fitted with a pinned blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. The top of the barrel has the two-line address legend ahead of the rear sight and "45-70" at the breech. Winchester factory oval proofs are present on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the three-line model/trade mark information. The lower tang has the patent dates and serial number. Mounted with a standard carbine forearm and buttstock with carbine buttplate.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine, retaining 85% original blue finish with thinning to a mottled brown. Traces of original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. There is some minor pitting on the buttplate which has faded to a gray. The buttstock is also fine with minor dings and scratches. The forend has a slight repair. A fine representative example of a Winchester Model 1886 .45-70 caliber carbine.

Winchester Model 1866 Carbine with "Half-Nickel" Plated Finish

Lot # 3007 (Sale Order: 8 of 671)

Very Rare Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine with the Rare "Half-Nickel" Plated Finish

This is a fine example of a very desirable Winchester Model 1866 third model saddle ring carbine manufactured in 1869 with the "half-nickel" plated finish. The third model receiver is identified by the moderate curve at the rear, and the serial number is correctly stamped in block numerals on the lower tang behind the trigger. It has the desirable staple mounted "saddle ring" on the left rear side of the receiver. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866 OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two-lines ahead of the rear sight. The barrel has the early style, upper barrel band that is integral with the front sight blade, and the rear of the barrel has been fitted with the second type, two-leaf, non-adjustable rear sight with the apertures marked "3" and "5". There are no markings on the cartridge elevator or the upper receiver tang, and the bolt has been converted from 44 RF to 44 CF which happened quite frequently out West as the center fire cartridge was a much better cartridge. The barrel, magazine tube, barrel bands and loading gate are all blued. The brass receiver, crescent buttplate, hammer, trigger, loading lever and cartridge elevator all have the very rare nickel-plated finish. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut.

Class: Antique

Fine. The carbine retains 80% of the original nickel-plated finish on the receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and cartridge elevator. The buttplate retains 30% of the nickel-plated finish. The finish on the nickel-plated components shows moderate handling wear and has numerous minor nicks and scratches. There are scattered patches of pitting on the lever and trigger. The barrel, magazine and upper barrel band have a mottled silver-brown patina. There is pitting on the upper barrel band, and the lower barrel band has a silver patina. The barrel markings are faint and only partially legible. The stock and forearm are good overall with moderate handling wear and a crack in the wrist. Winchester Model 1866 carbines were usually working guns, and carbines like this example frequently saw hard service on the frontier during the 1870s when the West was still wild. This rare nickel-plated Model 1866 carbine has been used and has the look and feel of a true Old West 1866 SRC!

Volcanic Repeating Arms Company Lever Action Navy Pistol

Lot # 3009 (Sale Order: 10 of 671)

Scarce Volcanic Repeating Arms Company Lever Action Navy Pistol

This Volcanic Repeating Arms Company Lever Action Navy Pistol with eight-inch barrel and rare gold-plated frame was manufactured c. 1856. The pistol has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral nine-shot magazine. The half-rib barrel has a cone front sight, crowned muzzle, rounded magazine T-bar muzzle catch and steel, clam-shell shaped magazine follower. The brass frame has a dovetail mounted rear sight and shallow, semi-circular cut-outs on the front and rear of the ejection port. The bolt has a single hook extractor. The hammer spur is hand-knurled. The loading lever has the distinctive finger hole. The pistol has two-piece, varnished, walnut grips. The barrel/magazine has a blue finish. The bolt, rear sight, loading lever, lever spring and cartridge elevator are niter blue. The hammer and trigger are color casehardened. The brass frame has a rarely encountered gold-plated finish but lacks the simple factory engraving found on most Volcanic Repeating Arms pistols. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the three-line legend: "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14. 1854." The serial number is stamped on the right side of the loading lever, left side of the frame beneath the grips and on the inside of both grips. All the visible serial numbers match. A small cartouche consisting of the block letters "JPE" enclosed in a rectangle is stamped on the bottom of the frame behind the cartridge elevator; the significance of this mark is unknown.

Class: Antique

Fine. The pistol is all original and retains 50% plus of the blue and casehardened finish. The balance of blue on the barrel/magazine has aged to an attractive plum color. The surfaces of the barrel/magazine are smooth and free from handling marks, and the edges are crisp. The barrel legend is sharp. The bolt, rear sight, cartridge elevator, lever and lever spring retain 20% of the niter blue finish. The hammer and trigger have most of the mottled, dove-gray case colors. Traces of delicate gold-plated finish are visible on protected areas of the frame. The walnut grips are very fine with scattered minor handling marks and retain 80% plus of the original lacquer finish. This is an exceptional example of a scarce and historically significant Volcanic Repeating Arms Company Lever Action Navy Pistol with rarely encountered gold-plated frame.

Volcanic Pistol Carbine Stock

Lot # 3010 (Sale Order: 11 of 671)

Desirable Volcanic Pistol Carbine Stock

Offered here is a highly desirable detachable stock for the Volcanic pistol-carbine. The number "478" appears on the tang of the brass buttplate. The last digit to the number "478" (number "8") appears on both buttplate screws, the back of the buttplate and stock under the buttplate. The Volcanic Arms Company manufactured approximately 300 pistol carbines with 16- and 8-inch barrels and attachable stocks c. 1855-1857. Fine. The period revarnished walnut has a number of minor dings and scratches and a repair at the toe. The brass buttplate has a mixed patina. An incredibly scarce accessory missing from even the most advanced American arms collections.

W.C. Dodge Volcanic Pistol-Carbine with Portrait & Holster

Lot # 3011 (Sale Order: 12 of 671)

Virtually Unique, Unbelievably Rare, Historic Volcanic Arms Co. Lever Action Repeating Carbine with "W.C. Dodge" Silver Plaque, Inscribed and Inlayed in the Grip, Matching Detachable Shoulder Stock, Matching Double-Compartment Leather Holster, and an Ambrotype of a Man Armed with a Similar Carbine

Per page 59 of "Volcanic Firearms: Predecessor to the Winchester Rifle" by Lewis and Rutter, this model was listed in the period as a "Detached Breech Rifle Carbine" and only 300 or less were manufactured. This already incredibly scarce Volcanic Arms Co. Pistol-Carbine is made even more desirable by its accompanying original shoulder stock numbered "305" and the original double compartment holster embossed "Volcanic" and "305" on the loop strap. The holster and markings are unquestionably 100% original and together with the inscribed pistol and numbered stock are the only complete set known to exist. Many of these pistols have mismatched shoulder stocks. The holster is similar to the example pictured on page 103 of the same reference and is incredibly rare, especially given it is numbered to the gun. Two other components of this lot add to its already considerably rarity, value, and historical interest: the "W.C./Dodge" inscribed silver inlay on the right grip and the gutta percha framed ambrotype of a man armed with a Volcanic pistol carbine with the stock dismounted. That carbine appears to be loaded in the photo given the location of the follower. The inscription and man pictured are believed to be highly influential 19th century inventor and patent lawyer William Castle Dodge (1827-1914), one of the foremost and least appreciated figures in the development and adoption of repeating and breech loading firearms. The man's facial features are very similar to a known portrait of Dodge much later in life. This set, to include the pistol with inscribed plaque serial #305, stock #305, holster #305 and ambrotype represent one the rarest firearms groupings known to the collecting fraternity.W.C. Dodge came to Washington, D.C., in 1860 after previously being a '49er and frontier farmer and was the doorkeeper of the U.S. House of Representatives. He is listed as one of the assistant marshals at Abraham Lincoln's inauguration. During the Civil War, Dodge was a U.S. Patent Office examiner until he resigned in early 1864 and established his own patent agency. The war is said to have spurred his interest in firearms advancements, particularly breech loading and repeating firearms. He is the author of "Breech-Loaders Versus Muzzle-Loaders; or, How to Strengthen Our Army and Crush the Rebellion with a Saving of Life and Treasure" (1864) which gives the Henry rifle particular praise. Given this, a Volcanic Pistol-Carbine would have certainly been a firearm that would have caught his earlier interest. His book included advertisements for New Haven Arms Co. and his new patent agency, and the latter included Oliver Winchester in his references. He was presented a finely engraved and inscribed Henry rifle by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1865 in relation to his influential publication. He was one of the men responsible for helping Oliver Winchester modify the Henry rifle into the famous Winchester Model 1866 as discussed on pages 117 and 142-143 of "Evolution of the Winchester" by McDowell and also served as Winchester's lawyer for patents. He was recognized within his lifetime for his contribution to firearms and ammunition designs. "Historical and Commercial Sketches of Washington and Environs" (1884) notes that he invented "valuable improvements in firearms and ammunition" including the automatic extractor used by Smith & Wesson and in Europe, "eight or nine improvements upon the celebrated Remington military rifle and double-barreled breech-loading shotgun, and others." It also references his innovative cartridge filling machine that was ordered by the government after the Washington Arsenal explosion in 1864. This machine made loading cartridges faster, more uniform, and safer. He received a gold medal from the King of Italy and an appointment as Knight Commander of the Order of Isabella the Catholic from the King of Spain in relation to his inventions, and his firm is noted as having "had entire charge of the patent business of several large manufacturing firms, among which may be mentioned E. Remington & Sons, the Winchester Repeating Arms Co., Hall's Safe and Lock Co., besides many others." His patents were influential in the genesis of the Smith & Wesson Model No. 3 revolvers. Smith & Wesson bought his patent numbers 45,912 and 45,983 in 1869. Dodge also held U.S. Patent 114,653 for automatic ejection when the revolver was opened. This was one of the standout features of the First Model American. He is known to have presented some of the latter, including a No. 3 American and a Model No. 3 Russian Third Model revolvers pr

Silver Trimmed Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3017 (Sale Order: 18 of 671)

Extraordinary Antique Documented Factory Silver Trimmed Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action .45-90 Rifle with Winchester Gun Museum Letter

The accompanying Winchester Gun Museum letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .45-90 caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, "silver trims," and Lyman front and rear sights when shipped on February 9, 1895 (no mention of inscription, possibly a factory record oversight as writer believes the inscription is factory). The rifle is pictured and identified in George Madis' "The Winchester Book" on page 332. The inscription on the left side of the receiver reads in large bold font, "Fred R. Hoisington/1895 FROM J.M.F." The rifle is equipped with a dovetail beaded blade Lyman front sight, elevation adjustable rear sight, and folding tang peep sight. The barrel is stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "45-90 WCF" at the breech on the top flat. The lower tang has the two-line patent dates marking and the serial number. The rifle has the highly sought after factory two-tone finish (blue and silver). The barrel, magazine tube and bolt are blued. The receiver, forend cap and buttplate are plated in silver. The half silver finish is a very rare Winchester special order feature, rarer than full nickel finish. The highly figured walnut forearm and pistol grip stock are checkered. The buttstock has an ebony grip insert and a solid crescent buttplate. Frederick Reed Hoisington (1868-1951) was born in Ohio and was one of seven children born to a Sri Lankan father and mother from New York. He was the father of five children and later lived in the State of New York where he died at the age of 82 in 1951.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The barrel and magazine tube retain 95% original blue finish. There is a small patch of pitting on the magazine tube towards the muzzle (left side). 95% original blue remains on the bolt. 98% plus attractive age darkened original silver plating remains on the forend cap, receiver, and buttplate. The inscription is crisp. 70% original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. Some original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The wood is also very fine with a repaired sliver at the upper tang, some minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Most of the finish remains. Mechanically excellent. A rare factory silver trim deluxe Model 1886 rifle with interesting period, possibly factory inscription that will add dimension to the most advanced Winchester collections!

The letter states this rifle was shipped from Winchester on January 8, 1902. The rifle has a 22-inch tapered round barrel and half-magazine. Excellent. This rifle is all original and retains nearly 90% of the bright original blue finish overall. Nearly 95% of the blue finish is present on the barrel and half magazine. The barrel markings are crisp. The blue on the sides of the forearm cap is thin. The receiver has 85% of the blue finish; there is some finish loss on the upper left side near the hammer and along the top edge of the receiver on the right side between the hammer and the loading gate. The bolt retains nearly all of the blue finish. The blue finish on the buttplate has faded to a smooth, mottled, blue-brown patina. The hammer, trigger and lever have 85% vivid original case colors that show minimal wear. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are both excellent overall and retain 90% plus of the high polish piano finish; wear is limited to a few scattered, minor, handling marks primarily on the underside of the forearm and sides of the stock wrist. The "Style H" checkering shows very little wear. This is an exceptional example of a scarce, special order, fancy Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 Extra Lightweight Short Rifle.

Jack Crawford & James Barton Adams Presentation Winchester 1873

Lot # 3023 (Sale Order: 24 of 671)

Well-Documented, Historic, Factory Exhibition Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Dual Presentation Plaques Presented by The Winchester Repeating Arms Company to Captain Jack Crawford and then Gifted to Fellow Western Scout, Friend, and Poet James Barton Adams

This rifle started life as a carbine, was factory converted into a rifle, embellished by Winchester in 1897 and used as a deluxe factory display piece. It was displayed at both the New York Exhibition of Industry and Science in 1898 and at the Pan-American International Exposition in Buffalo in 1901 and would have been seen by millions of visitors. In 1902, it was presented by Winchester (a monumentally rare occurrence at the time) to one of the true heroes of the American West: John Crawford, better known as Captain Jack or “The Poet Scout.” Crawford had the rifle fitted with a second presentation plaque by the factory in 1903 and gave it as a Christmas present to his close friend James Barton Adams. Recent research has revealed that this specific rifle was featured in a nearly full-page newspaper article (copy included in accompanying provenance file) in The Atlanta Constitution on January 3, 1904, regarding the reason for its presentation. Adams’ cherished collection of western memorabilia and artifacts had been destroyed when his new home in Denver had burned to the ground. The rifle presentation was Crawford’s attempt to help ease the pain of his friends’ loss, and help him start a new collection. This very rifle, in its original casing, is actually pictured in the newspaper! Crawford’s life was truly full of adventure, violence, daring feats and intrigue, and he was among the most famous frontier scouts. He later became one of the most popular western performers of the late 1800s and early 1900s. He was born John Wallace Crawford in Ireland to Scottish parents in 1847 and his family emigrated to the U.S. in search of better opportunities. He served in the 48th Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War and was wounded at both Spotsylvania and Petersburg. He headed to the West during the Black Hills Gold Rush and joined the Black Hills Rangers protecting the local populace from Indian attacks as their chief scout. He also worked as a journalist in the Gold Camps and then as a war correspondent during the Bighorn and Yellowstone Expeditions as a scout under Brigadier General George Crook. Crawford became friends with William “Buffalo Bill” Cody while serving under Crook and replaced Cody as head of scouts when Cody returned to the East. As a scout, he undertook many dangerous journeys to deliver dispatches and also took part in multiple battles. He rose to national fame after riding 350 miles in just six days in order to deliver news of Crook’s triumph over Chief American Horse after participating in the Battle of Slim Buttes in September 1876 during the Great Sioux War. News of the victory was much needed after Custer’s infamous defeat earlier that June. He then joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in the East until he was shot in the groin during a reenactment of a running horse battle. He later claimed Cody accidentally shot him because he was drunk. He moved his family to New Mexico in 1879 and resumed work as a scout during the Apache War and Victorio’s War and participated in raids against the Apache and into Mexican territory. Crawford also served as a trader at Fort Craig and went into the ranching and mining business. His ranch in New Mexico was established in 1886. James Adams, the final recipient of this outstanding rifle, grew up in Iowa and Ohio, fought in the Civil War for the Union and was also a former scout and one of the few western poets. He lived and worked at Crawford’s ranch in New Mexico from 1890 to 1892 before moving to Colorado where he continued to write poetry, worked in publishing, and remained in close correspondence with Crawford. After the Apache conflict, Crawford resumed his position as a cultural icon in the 1890s and early 20th century by speaking and performing throughout the U.S. and was known to have continued his crusade against the use of alcohol. He had previously been appointed a special investigator and had looked into the illegal trafficking of alcohol in Indian Country. Like other performers, he wore flashy outfits and acted the part, but his charming nature and poetry contrasted with the popular image of unrefined western men and with “The Poet Scout’s” own tales of battles and adventure. He regularly appeared armed with a Winchester rifle and a Colt on his hip while he spoke for hours about life in the West and of his many adventures. His speeches and writings are known to have more closely related the very real dangers of frontier life than many other western icons but also reflected long standing popular beliefs in American exceptionalism, rugged individualism, and t
