Spectacular 16th Century German Wheel-Lock Sporting Gun

Produced circa 1590, this is a fine example of a German production sporting wheel-lock. Blade front and fixed notch rear sights on the heavy, smoothbore barrel. Bright steel lock plate with brass fittings, showing concentric rings on the wheel cover, spring loaded flashpan cover with floral engraved catch, light engraving on the cock and spring, and a pierced-through decorative plate on the spring. Equipped with double set triggers and finger grooved trigger guard. Full length pin mounted stock, with a bone tipped ramrod, forearm grasping grooves, border carving on the reverse of the lock with a pair of floral carved round bone screw escutcheons, scalloped cheekpiece with a carved oval panel featuring a stag in the center and a rectangular panel of a dog pursuing a hare on the bottom, spring retained patch box on the reverse, a second dog-and-hare carved panel on the comb and a flat iron buttplate. Though subtle in adornment, it is a highly attractive German sporting gun.

Condition: Very fine, showing only scattered traces of pitting on the steel, with sharp barrel edges and minimal handling marks. Stock is very fine, showing well defined carving, minor yellowing on the panels, and some minor chips and dings overall, minimal for a nearly 400 year-old gun. An exceptional example of a rare German 16th Century Wheel-Lock Sporting Gun in fine original condition, which would make an excellent representative piece for a collection.

Extraordinary Spanish Miquelet with Elaborate Inlaid Stock

Extraordinary Spanish Miquelet with Elaborate Inlaid Stock
Estimate: $7500 - $15000
Possibly Spanish in origin, and made in the late Seventeenth Century, this extraordinary Miquelet features a 30" part octagon barrel with a flared muzzle measuring 1 1/8" diameter. The forward 3 7/8" of the muzzle are also fluted. The barrel features gold inlays covering much of the octagon portion and at the ends of the round portion. The top barrel flat is marked with a recessed relief marking in gold, which has three characters (possibly Arabic). The battery is very similar to the 17th Century Miquelet lock which has a removable face (dove tailed to the base) which has 6 channels at the point of contact with the flint. The hammer and flash pan base have gold inlays of simple designs. The trigger guard is iron, extends about 3 1/2" back of the trigger and is decorated with simple gold inlaid designs. The stock is heavily adorned with scrimshawed and carved ivory insets consisting of geometric and floral designs, and rope border. There is also a hunter on the right buttstock, the bust of an Arabian man on the underside of the forearm area and a serpent and lion on the left flat. The butt is uniquely rounded and it is flat on the top and bottom. The forend cap is carved ivory. Complete with an iron ramrod with flared tip.

The pistol has a smoothbore, half-round/half-octagon barrel dated "1575" on the top flat, with 10 asterix arranged on the top flats and a "HZ/ (block) maker's mark on the breech, with the identical makers mark on the lock. The pistol has a large, bright-finished lock, with the barrel stamp repeated below the wheel cover, scroll engraving on the cock and cockspring, and a spring loaded flashpan with engraved line accents. Full length ball pommel stock with intricate bone or ivory inlays, with almost the entire surface covered in intricate scrollwork, as little as .02 inches thick, with a large number of burst and line pattern decorated dots, and a number of larger panels, arranged as follows; the left side shows two feathered serpents on an oval, a larger serpent with a fruit arrangement, 2 man-headed beasts in an oval with a fruit bowl, a grouping of fruit, a leaf burst on a circle, a knight's helm backed by crossed swords, a scroll burst pattern on a circle, another grouping of fruit, and a floral and fruit engraved panel just ahead of the bone collar that connects the wrist to the pommel, the right side is similar, with the lock starting at the man-headed serpent panel and running to the floral panel, the underside has a lined and checkerboard tip, a 3.9" long panel leading to a man-headed winged serpents, a figure in Greco-Roman armor with polearm and shield, a leafy panel around the trigger and at the collar, and the top shows the head of a man in a fancy headdress on either side of the tang and a warrior with sword and shield, armored as the man on the underside. The pommel has a scroll decorated round cap, with 24 scroll, floral, leaf and fruit decorated circle panels arranged around the sides.

Possibly French in origin, this very straight profile wheellock weapon is of the highest quality (for the period) in workmanship. Produced with an octagonal smoothbore barrel, and fitted with a 7 1/2 inch long lock, featuring a exposed wheel, spring loaded pan cover, file work on the cockspring and engraved cock with a beast's head visible on the jaws and a man's head on the arm. Attractive dark varnished hardwood full length stock, with a brass forearm tip, brass shod ramrod head , and a burst-engraved brass collar between the octagonal wrist and the 2 1/2" long, 1 3/5" wide ball pommel. All sides of the stock show brass wire scroll inlay, with several of the lengths terminating in inlaid mother of pearl floral blooms, along with a pair of brass burst engraved screw escutcheons for the lock plate, a wrap-around brass band on the forearm and a large number of round and oval mother of pearl panels, decorated with game scenes, floral designs and men's faces, present on both the main body and the pommel. The number "20" is stamped under the stock, rear of the trigger guard (origin unknown).

The inlays are very fine, with a minimal amount of wire loss and a few cracked or chipped panels.

A) Produced without sights, with a silver wire wrap near the muzzle and raised relief chiseled engraved designs of men, both standing and on horseback, and assorted animals covering the top. Similar designs are present on the lock, hammer and frizzen, with a serrated frizzen face and engraved trigger guard. Full length stock, with a simulated ramrod, raised carved designs on the underside of the forearm and around the tang, silver wire scrollwork on the wrist, a pierced-through figural engraved shield, and a silver pommel cap with raised scrollwork and grotesque faces. Overall length 18 1/2 inches.

Full length stock, with engraved silver diamond panels running down the sides, a cut-through scroll reverse plate, buttcap with raised designs and extended tangs, 6 round pieces of silver mounted orange coral and several cut-through scroll and floral silver panels on top of the wrist.

This is an example of an 18th Century flintlock Italian Pistol of fine quality of research. Produced without sights, with punch-dot backed scroll engraving near the rear surrounding a faint bust. Further scroll and punch engraving on the lock plate, frizzen and hammer, with "LVCA ZVGNO" along the bottom of the lock. Research places Luca Zugno as a gunsmith operating out of Brescia in the 1700s. Reverse plate shows scroll and punch engraving, with pierced-through scrollwork and a bust in the center. Full length stock, with carved scroll patterns, engraved furniture, and scroll, punch and bust patterns on the trigger guard, wrist plate and buttcap.

The lock is also relief chiseled, with a pair of figures on the lock plate, a face on the front of the frizzen, and two faces on the hammer. Full length stock constructed from brass, with a 3" long brass plate wrapping around the top of the muzzle, scroll designs on the underside of the trigger guard, ribbed wrist and a flared butt with a spiked cap, all covered with raised engraving.

Of unknown origin, possibly Russian or Caucasian. Barrel produced with a sighing rib, with a small gold filled "M" proof on the rib and a set of three cruciform stamps, two of which are also gold filled. The thick, raised lock plate is free of makers marks, with engraved decoration on the hammer screw, a curled design on the frizzen tip and a feather at the end of the frizzen spring. Smooth full length straight wrist stock, with a simulated ramrod with brass pipes, scalloped carved borders around the barrel, lock and side plate, raised carvings on the underside and on the wrist, brass trigger guard and reverse plate, with floral designs on the trigger guard and raised scrollwork on the reverse, a silver decorative plate on the wrist with a floral pattern silver square in the center, surrounded by beadwork with a pair of silver fitted unidentified, possible precious stones and a silver wire twist around the border, and a brass buttcap with raised floral designs, an elevated base and a silver cylinder on top with raised floral decoration.

A) At first glance one would think this was purely a decorative arm, but closer examination reveals it to be of much better quality and of Mediterranean style. Produced without sights, with a flared muzzle decorated with a 3 1/4" long wedge of inlaid leafy vine designs, with similar decoration in oval panels at the midsection and breech. Further vine and geometric inlays are present on the lock and hammer, with a serrated frizzen. Full length straight wrist stock, with raised carved decorations, silver wire scroll inlay, weave pattern at the wrist, carved cheekpieces and a flat buttplate.

B) Engraved Flintlock Mediterranean Pistol
Cannon muzzle, with the rear 3 1/5" of the barrel decorated with a raised engraved panel, which includes an array of arms and flags, as well as a radiant crescent moon. An engraved animal is visible on the hammer, with a faint signature and scroll designs on the lock plate. Smooth pistol grip stock, with brass trigger guard, copper reverse plate and brass buttcap with raised arrays of arms and flags.

A) The barrel is fitted with a pair of wide silver barrel bands with raised scroll and floral engraving, a raised sighting groove on the tang, and is marked "S S m 568" on the left side, with "30" and a small proof in an oval closer to the breech. (This barrel most likely was from a musket that was modified for this pistol.) Light border engraving is present on the hammer, frizzen and lock plate, with a set of three silver panels with raised engraving set into the hammer and the front and rear of the lock. Full length stock, with a ramrod channel, smooth wrist with 7 inlaid diamond shaped bone panels, border engraved brass trigger guard and a brass buttcap with lanyard ring.

Originally developed in the Caucasus and Georgia, and later adopted by the Cossacks. The blade is nearly 12 inches long and 1 1/10 inches wide, with a set of triple fullers in the central section, double edges, and a long tapered spear point. One piece silver hilt, with flaring at the front and rear to form the pommel and guard, a beaded border around the front edge and extensive decoration on one side, including twisted silver wire patterns, black enamel fill, silver balls at the front and rear, and an oval silver bar in the center. OAL: 17 1/4". Silver sheath, with similar wire and enamel decoration on one side, a ball tip followed by a wire wrap, and a pair of stamped gilt brass panels with leafy vine decorations.

Both knives are fitted with curved blades, flared grip pommels and the Arabian-style sheaths with sharply curved tips. 1) Gold and silver fitted jambiya, with a 7" unmarked blade. The hilt is silver, with zig-zag engraving, darker accents, silver and gold accent bands around the center and near the sheath, and a pair of 3-D gold flowers on one side. OAL: 10 1/2". Sheath has a leather panel on the rear, with zig-zag backed floral engraving with darkened accents on the gold and silver plates on the front. 2) Gold accented jambiya, with a 6 1/4" triple fuller blade and a horn grip with wire accented decorative bands. OAL: 10". Two patches of red leather are present on the rear of the sheath, with the front covered in engraved and wire accented nearly pure gold panels, with floral and zig-zag patterns.

Two Gold Inlaid Damascus Knives

1) Knife, 8" single edged Damascus blade with a 3 inch false edge, a slight widening before the top, and a triangular gold inlaid floral scroll panel, 2" long, on either side, wrapping around the spine and just below the edge. Matching style inlay on the grip collar, with a bag shaped ivory grip carved with leaf designs and a raised shield. OAL: 12 1/4". 2) Knife, 8 3/4" single edged blade with a downward canted spine, deep single fuller on the right side leading to a set of short double fullers, and a 1 1/4" long gold inlaid floral panel on the sides and along the spine. Similar floral work is visible on the hilt, and smooth bone grips. OAL: 13 1/4".

Condition: 1) Good. Some light sharpening marks are visible on the blade, along with a few dents. Grip shows some age cracking and a deep color. Gold is very good, with a tiny amount of glue visible on the right side of the finger guard. 2) Fair as repaired, with a mended crack in the blade just ahead of the etched section, a dull gray patina overall, mild handling marks and chipping of the grip panels.

OAL: 13 1/4". With a silver fitted leather sheath, showing tooled scrollwork on the leather and raised floral designs on the silver. 2) Knife, similar in layout to 1, with 10 3/4" blade, triangular gold inserts in the hilt and matching silver sheath. OAL: 13". 3) Silver hilted knife, 6 1/2" blade marked "ACERO/ FRANCES/ GARANTIDO" on the side, with a gold accented floral decorated silver hilt and leather sheath. OAL: 11". 4) Knife, as 3, 6 3/4" blade, faint maker's marks, silver hilt and scalloped designs on the sheath. OAL: 11 3/4". 5) Large Argentine knife, 11 1/2" blade with filed spine and "SIMBRA" maker's mark, floral decorated silver hilt with gold accents, and matching silver and gold sheath. OAL: 17 1/2". 6) Silver accented Indian sword, 23 3/4" straight Damascus blade with raised and silver accented animal designs in etched panels down the sides and silver leaf inlay on the ricassos. Bras hilt, with floral decorations, short quillions, pointed languets, thin knuckleguard and lion head pommel. OAL: 28 1/4". With a black cloth lined and gold and silver wire accented sheath.

Kard Dagger with Damascus Blade, Silver Inlay, Unique Animal Head Ivory Grip and Velvet Sheath

Blade is 9" long, with a slight forward cant to the spine, a 1 1/2" triangular panel of silver wire floral inlay on either side, and an untranslated inlaid symbol on the right. Grip is smooth ivory, with dual ball quillions and a ram-head pommel with carved-through horns and fine detail. OAL: 14 1/2" The sheath is covered in red velvet, with copper wire on the seam and in a pair of decorative bands near the throat.

Large Katar Punching Dagger

Two piece construction, with the hilt section produced separately from the blade, which could be European in origin. Blade is 16" long and 1 3/5" wide, with a spear tip, secured with rivets to a Fleur-de-Lis style projection from the hilt. The hilt shows a scalloped pattern along the front edge, with 9 1/4" long concave support bars and 3" long grip bars, with round flared centers.

Two Katar Daggers

1) Katar, 7 1/4" long blade, 2/5" thick near the tip, with a set of 3 reinforced ribs on each side. Twist pattern grip, with 7 long support bars and 2 3/4" wide grip bars with flared centers. 2) Katar, 9 1/2" blade, 1/3" thick, reinforced similar to 1, with floral engraving at the bottom. Zig-zag etched grip, with 6 3/4" concave support arms and 2 7/8" wide grip bars. Both appear to be very old and European origin.
