Exceptionally Scarce Special Order/Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Lever Action Rifle with Fac

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 920)

Exceptionally Scarce Special Order/Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Lever Action Rifle with Factory Documentation

This is an excellent example of a rare Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 takedown lever action rifle chambered in the, then, hot new 33 WCF cartridge. This rifle was manufactured in late 1904, received in the Winchester factory warehouse in Feb 1904. It was shipped out under order 219666 on 18, Feb 1904. This cartridge was first produced in late 1902 making this rifle an early chambering for this new high velocity cartridge. As noted this rifle exhibits several deluxe features, such as the pistol grip stock, deluxe/fancy walnut stock and forend, with the highly desirable takedown feature, full magazine, shotgun style butt. The Winchester factory letter validates all these features except that it states it has a rubber buttplate, with this rifle clearly having a standard steel checkered buttplate (a.k.a. M70 style buttplate). The top of the barrel is roll stamped in two lines with "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A-" ahead of the rear sight, with, "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" on the left rear side of the barrel in front of the takedown collar. The caliber designation "33 W.C.F." is stamped on the top of the barrel at the breech. As noted the buttstock and forend are made from a beautiful set of extra fancy burl walnut stock, with matching figure on both sides. The pistol grip has the standard black hard rubber, embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" grip cap with both having been factory checkered. It is fitted with a special order Lyman hunting front sight with ivory insert and a low profile, adjustable sporting rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll stamped "-MODEL 1886-". The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates and the serial number "130031" in script numerals.

Very fine with 98% of an old professionally applied blue finish, now just starting to show some age with only very light edges and high spot wear. The edges are sharp and square and have not been buffed or rounded over with clear sharp factory markings. The stock and forend have an oil finish and both are in excellent condition with sharp distinct checkering, showing only a couple of minor handling marks. There is a small crack just starting on the left center side of the buttstock. An excellent example of a really nice and very desirable deluxe special order Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle.

The takedown latch has the 1893 patent marking. The forearm and straight grip stock are walnut with a highly attractive grain pattern. The included Winchester Gun Museum letter confirms the caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, takedown, lyman fron and rear sights and "fancy" stock and it was shipped on August 31, 1905.

Very good. The rifle retains 30% original blue finish with a smooth brown-gray patina on the balance. Some mild pitting is present on the bolt. The wood is excellent with a few very scattered very minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
