Attractive and Scarce Hand Painted and Framed Advertising Poster for the Lost John Wayne Film "The O

Lot # 64 (Sale Order: 63 of 920)

Attractive and Scarce Hand Painted and Framed Advertising Poster for the Lost John Wayne Film "The Oregon Trail"

Produced in 1936, The Oregon Trail was an early work for both film legend John Wayne and Republic Pictures. Republic, established in 1935 via the forced merger of 6 different film studios by the development lab they all owed money to would grow to be one of the largest independent operators in Hollywood, chiefly on the strength of their Westerns and serials. Wayne, already employed by two of the studios that made up Republic, was still a few years off from his breakthrough in the film Stagecoach, working smaller roles in "A" list productions and starring in "B" films. Like many pre-1950's films, The Oregon Trail is a lost film, with no known surviving prints. In The Oregon Trail, Wayne starred as Captain John Delmont, an Army officer who takes a leave of absence to track down his father's killers, in the process taking charge of a West-bound wagon train to continue his pursuit. The poster is painted in oil on canvas, with the upper section dominated by a close-up of Wayne, with the main body filled with a scene of a covered wagon driven by a man in a red shirt, with a group of armed figures in horseback in pursuit. Text along the top reads "REPUBLIC/PICTURES/presents/John WAYNE" in blue and red, with "The/OREGON TRAIL" in green below the stagecoach, with the black, white and gold Republic Pictures logo in the lower left corner and the credits (director, supervisor, screenplay and original story) in white next to it. The frame is hardwood with a mixed black and gold finish, measuring 29 3/4 inches wide and 45 inches tall, with a plain brown paper covering across the back. No artists signature or other identifying marks are visible.

Excellent. Some light cracking, possibly a result of rolling for storage, is visible, with a few mild handling marks. The color remains bright and vivid, with sharp detail. Mild tearing of the backing paper has occurred, but no damage to the back of the canvas is visible. A chance to own a rare artifact from the film career of John Wayne and the opening years of one of the top Western film studios in America.

A Fine Stetson-Style Hat, Attributed as a Personal Gift From John Wayne to Doctor Henry "Hank" Drexl

Lot # 65 (Sale Order: 64 of 920)

A Fine Stetson-Style Hat, Attributed as a Personal Gift From John Wayne to Doctor Henry "Hank" Drexler, U.S. Navy

According to an included letter from Marlene Drexler, this hat was the property of her husband Henry Drexler. Known as "Hank", Dr. Drexler was a cowboy in his youth, before becoming a doctor of Orthopedics and sports medicine, in the former capacity serving with the United States Navy during the Second World War. After the war, in addition to continuing his medical practice, Drexler owned a sheet metal fabrication firm which was contracted to produce miniature special effects models for the film industry; in this capacity he encountered many Hollywood stars including John Wayne, who reportedly presented this hat to Drexler upon learning that the Doctor had taken up hat collecting as a hobby. John Wayne, legend of the silver screen, should require no further introduction here, save to note that the Duke was a man who appreciated a good Stetson. The hat, which lacks makers marks, is a 20th century-style stetson, light tan felt construction with "cattleman" style creasing, silk brim reinforcement and band. The interior is unmarked save a hand-written tape label, and outfitted with a black leather sweatband. Also included with the letter is a copy of Dr. Drexler's obituary, which mentions his wartime service and settlement in the Las Vegas area around the 1990's.

Fine. A small repair is present on the left side of the crown crease, with some minor staining, concentrated on the silk. An attractive hat attributed to one of the grand figures of 20th century American cinema.
