Documented 1899 Production Winchester Model 1897 Solid Frame Slide Action Riot Shotgun

Lot # 781 (Sale Order: 779 of 920)

Documented 1899 Production Winchester Model 1897 Solid Frame Slide Action Riot Shotgun

Single bead sight, with "CYL" marked choke and standard two line address and patents on top of the barrel. No oval "WP" proof stamp is present on the barrel or frame. Ribbed forearm and smooth pistol grip stock with a smooth steel buttplate and a 13 3/4 inch length of pull. With a printout of a Cody Firearms Museum e-mail, indicating a 20 inch barrel, serial application on 17 May 1899, arrival at the warehouse on 20 May and shipping on the same day.

Very fine, with 80% of the original blue finish, showing areas of gray and brown patina along with scattered scratches and handling marks. An impression scratch is present on the left side of the receiver into the finish; if this was a factory machining error, it could explain the absence of the "WP" proof. Stock is fine, with a number of scratches, dents and small chips, and the buttstock showing a semi-fancy grain pattern, particularly noticeable around the toe. Mechanically excellent.

Scarce Roper Revolving Shotgun

Lot # 784 (Sale Order: 782 of 920)

Scarce Roper Revolving Shotgun

This is an example of a earlier production Roper revolving shotgun that was manufactured at Hartford, Connecticut from 1869 to 1876 by the Roper Sporting Arms Company. The serial number is marked on the barrel and frame under the forearm. The muzzle is equipped with a threaded variable choke and there is a large iron bead front sight. This shotgun used special steel cartridges (included). The four shot carriers (consisting of a series of fins) are enclosed within a large round housing with a hinged loading gate on top which is marked "ROPER SPORTING ARMS CO./HARTFORD CONN/PAT. APR. 10, 1866, JULY 14, 1868.". The hammer pulls the sliding breechblock to the rear, removing the fired case from the barrel, then revolving the cloverleaf carrier; when the trigger was pulled, it pushes the next cartridge into the barrel firing it. The barrel was blue with the frame, trigger guard, and housing casehardened. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with pewter forend cap and checkered straight grip stock with a steel shotgun butt. Length of pull is 13 1/2 inches.
