Civil War New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 80 (Sale Order: 79 of 920)

Civil War New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Henry Lever Action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. c. June 1864. The rifle has the distinctive brass gunmetal receiver and crescent buttplate with blued octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The straight grain, walnut stock is oil finished. The barrel has a nickel silver front sight and dovetail mounted folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight has a 900 yard center notch and elevator bar with rounded ends. The magazine has the late production large brass follower. The rifle has the second pattern buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The butt trap contains the correct four-piece, jointed steel cleaning rod furnished with later production Henry rifles. A sling swivel and screw fastened sling loop are mounted on the left side of the stock and barrel. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped ahead of the rear sight dovetail with the second style legend "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT.16.1860/MANUFACT'D. BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN.CT." with all serif letters. The serial number "5632" is stamped on the top barrel flat, on the left side of the lower receiver tang, in the upper tang inlet or the stock and on the inside of the buttplate at the heel. All of the visible serial numbers match. The late style cap head buttplate and tang screws are correctly not serial numbered. The Henry rifle was the most advanced firearm manufactured during the Civil War. Most of the New Haven Arms Co. rifle production was purchased by individual Federal soldiers who wanted the advantage of a 15-shot repeating rifle. After the Civil War the Henry rifle was extremely popular with frontiersmen and Native Americans.

Good as partially restored. The rifle has a reproduction rear sight, non-factory sling swivel, re-rolled barrel legend and refinished stock. The barrel has a gray-brown patina with smooth surfaces and sharp edges. The receiver and buttplate have an attractive, age patina with tight side plate joints. Wear is limited to a few minor scratches. The hammer and lever have a smooth mottled brown patina. The stock has been refinished. This is still a good representative example a Civil War production Henry rifle.

Factory Engraved Gold Washed Deluxe Marlin Model 1897 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 81 (Sale Order: 80 of 920)

Factory Engraved Gold Washed Deluxe Marlin Model 1897 Lever Action Rifle

This is a unique example of a seldom found factory engraved Marlin Model that was manufactured in 1900. The receiver is finely engraved with scroll patterns with a curly and wavy line border. In addition there is a round panel on the left side with a buck in a wooded scene. A similar type of engraving featured on a Model 1897 is pictured and described as a No. 1 engraving in William Brophy's book MARLIN FIREARMS on pages 531 and 534. The top barrel flat is marked with the two line "THE MARLIN FIREARMS CORPORATION/NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED". The bottom line is flanked by outward pointing arrows. The upper left rear flat is marked "22 S-L- L-R" flanked by outward pointing arrows and the upper right rear flat is marked with "JM" in an oval. The top of the receiver is engraved "MARLIN SAFETY" with a wavy line border on three sides. The serial number appears on the bottom of the receiver. The barrel is equipped with a dovetail ivory beaded front blade sight and an adjustable rear sporting sight. The upper tang is fitted with a short range Lyman #1 peep sight. Full length magazine tube, all gold washed finish except for blue sights and mounted with a deluxe checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a crescent buttplate. Information provided by the consignor states that the rifle was shipped from the warehouse on January 15, 1900 with a 24 inch 22 SLLR octagon barrel, full magazine, rifle buttplate, deluxe pistol grip stock and forearm with factory "A" checkering, factory #1 scroll engraved receiver with a deer on the left side with a full nickel finish. The gun was returned to the factory in 1922 and fitted with the Marlins Firearms Corporation barrel and new Model 39 coil hammer spring, the latter being first available in 1922. The Marlin firearms Corporation was in existence from 1921 to 1924. The gold wash finish was done when the barrel was replaced. An accompanying Cody Firearms Records Office letter verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, 24 inch octagon barrel, pistol grip stock and shipment on January 15, 1900. Corporation Marlins don't show up every day. Of the few Corporation Marlin's produced, between 1921 and 1924, to be engraved and gold washed is extremely rare and unique. Provenance: Len Guldman Collection, Denver, Colorado.

Fine as factory replated/rebarreled (see above). The rifle retains much of the gold wash finish in protected areas with the original nickel finish visible on the balance. There are a few minor dings on the barrel. The wood is also fine with a small area of gouging on the stock near the toe on the left side, a series of small dents on the dings on the right side, some minor dents and dings on the forearm and overall crisp checkering. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.

Scarce Fantastic Nickel Plated Smith & Wesson Model 320 "Buntline Special" Revolving Rifle with Shou

Lot # 98 (Sale Order: 97 of 920)

Scarce Fantastic Nickel Plated Smith & Wesson Model 320 "Buntline Special" Revolving Rifle with Shoulder Stock, Scope and Factory Letter

Manufactured from 1879 to 1887, the Model 320 revolving rifle is one of the rarest Smith & Wesson firearms produced with a total production of 977 and only 85-90 feature nickel finish. These firearms were serial numbered from 1 to 977 and out of the 977 manufactured, 514 had the 18 inch barrel. Only 840 of these were sold in the U.S. and the remaining 137 were exported. This scarce and unusual revolving rifle was sometimes referred to as the Smith & Wesson "Buntline Special" in the combination of a long barreled revolver with attaching shoulder stock. This Model 320 was manufactured using the frame, cylinder and basic action of the New Model No. 3 revolver with some minor differences in the hammer and trigger, and with the barrel being made of two pieces. A slot is cut into the butt and a hole drilled in the back strap to accommodate the shoulder stock. The rifle features an 18 inch barrel with a globe front sight with cross hair aperture and a nickel plated 23 3/4 inch long tube scope with blue finished mounts. The rifle is chambered for the 320 Smith & Wesson cartridge. The top of the rib is marked with the two line address/patent dates. The matching serial number appears on the butt, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. Nickel finish with casehardened hammer and trigger guard. The barrel is fitted with a checkered hard rubber red mottled forearm with the Smith &Wesson monogram on the underside. The grips are matching with Smith & Wesson monograms in a circle at the tops. The shoulder stock features nickel plated attaching iron and a checkered hard rubber buttplate with the Smith &Wesson monogram. A blue finished stock tang peep sight is included. Also with the revolving rifle is a set of reloading tools in a two piece green box with the "Directions for Using Smith & Wesson Revolving Rifle Reloading Tools" label on top of the box. The included Smith &Wesson factory letter states that the firearm was shipped on March 3, 1895 to J.P. Lovell & Son of Boston, MA. The letter confirms the 18 inch barrel and checkered mottled hard rubber grips and forearm. Although the factory records were incomplete as to not list the type of finish, the nickel plating on this example is factory original. Blue was the standard finish for Model 320s, making nickel finished examples even more scarce.

Excellent. The revolving rifle retains 97% original nickel finish with limited flaking. The forearm and grips are excellent showing a few minor handling marks with overall crisp checkering. The scope retains most of the original nickel finish and has clear optics. The hammer and trigger guard retain much of the original case colors. The stock is excellent showing some minor handling marks and the attaching iron retaining 97% original nickel finish. Mechanically excellent. Accessories are excellent. A phenomenal and equally rare nickel plated 18 inch Smith and Wesson 320 rifle and probably the only known specimen with a period scope.

Factory Documented Spectacular and Extremely Rare Gustave Young Factory Engraved Smith & Wesson Mode

Lot # 99 (Sale Order: 98 of 920)

Factory Documented Spectacular and Extremely Rare Gustave Young Factory Engraved Smith & Wesson Model 320 "Buntline Special" Revolving Rifle with Shoulder Stock and Case

It is with great pleasure we at Rock Island Auction Company offer for sale this phenomenal S&W 320 Revolving Rifle. This gun has served as the centerpiece to four world class Smith & Wesson collections: The Mac McCroskie Collection, The Gary Garbrecht Collection (sold 2005), The Kevin Hogan Collection (sold 2007) writer of this description, and The Dr. Don Anderson Collection. Manufactured from 1879 to 1887, the Model 320 Revolving Rifle is one of the rarest Smith & Wesson firearms produced with a total production of 977. These firearms were serial numbered from 1 to 977 and out of the 977 manufactured, 514 had the 18 inch barrel. Only 840 of these were sold in the U.S. and the remaining 137 were exported. These revolving rifles were sometimes referred to as the Smith & Wesson "Buntline Special" in the combination of a long barreled revolver with attaching shoulder stock. This Model 320 was manufactured using the frame, cylinder and basic action of the New Model No. 3 revolver with some minor differences in the hammer and trigger, with the barrel being made of two pieces. A slot is cut into the butt and a hole drilled in the back strap to accommodate the shoulder stock. The rifle features an 18 inch barrel with a globe front sight with cross hair aperture and two leaf folding rear sight on a rib marked with the two line address/patent date marking ahead of the rear sight and a scroll and punch dot engraving behind the rear sight which extends to the breech. As aforementioned this gun was apart of the iconic collection of Gary Garbrecht sold on the east coast in the fall of 2005. At the time this rifle was originally sold it was accompanied by a factory letter which has subsequently been misplaced and no longer accompanies this rifle. The writer has reached out to Mr. Roy Jinks, the respected Smith & Wesson historian and asked that a duplicated letter be researched and written so that the history of this rare and important rifle is not lost to the ages. Quoting the previously letter which "confirms configuration and attributes the engraving to the master Mr. Gustave Young." Further, it states "this rifle was engraved at the time the factory was preparing a group of firearms to be sent to the World Exhibition being held in Melbourne, Australia." Lastly and probably most pertinent Mr. Jinks stated: "Based on my research only one other engraved revolving rifle is known and it has been refinished." Let it be known that upon further examination it is my humble opinion that this revolving rifle has been period factory refinished. Based on the information given on this revolving rifle from the original factory letter one can conclude that this rifle was made for exhibition to be displayed by Smith & Wesson at the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880. Given the serial number this would fit that time frame, it would have been a new product and what better place to show it off than at the World's Fair. Not to mention the quality of Mr. Young's work is certainly exhibition worthy. Similar to the practices of other well known firearms manufactures known for large exhibition displays, in particular Winchester, most rifles and carbines not sold were returned to the factory to be restored, and would often times be a part of the next grand display which is what I surmise is the case with this particular revolving rifle. Either it was shot and not cleaned or even if 5% of the Fair's visitors stopped to drool or picked up this rifle it would have been handled by 50,000 individuals! After the fair the gun was returned to the factory and restored to like new condition as was the practice for other exhibition guns of the period. While it is unknown exactly when S&W began applying markings such as the * (See Jink and Neal "Smith & Wesson 1857-1945 which states the * did not appear in a factory catalog until 1900), this gun would no doubt predate those practices. The rear sides of the barrel and barrel lug also feature the engraved scrollwork. The beautifully executed scroll and punch dot engraved motif covers the sides of the frame to extend to the top and sides of the top strap, the area around and behind the hammer and on the back strap. The cylinder chambers are also engraved with the same scroll pattern. The matching serial number appears on the butt, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. Blue finish with casehardened hammer and trigger guard. The barrel is fitted with a checkered hard rubber red mottled forearm with the S&W monogram on the underside. The grips are matching with S&W monograms in a circle at the tops. The stock is smooth Circassian walnut with blue finished attaching iron and a checkered black hard rubber buttplate with S&W monogram. more...

Very Fine and Documented Colorful Calvary Issued, Scarce U.S. Contract Smith & Wesson Model 3 Americ

Lot # 100 (Sale Order: 99 of 920)

Very Fine and Documented Colorful Calvary Issued, Scarce U.S. Contract Smith & Wesson Model 3 American First Model Revolver

The revolver was part of a shipment of 1,000 units, 800 blue finish and 200 in nickel finish. The American Revolver was the first cartridge revolver adopted by the U.S. military and saw usage throughout the Indian Wars as it was reported to have been issued to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Cavalry. Surviving examples of U.S. martial Model 3 Americans are scarce and highly desirable in any condition and this example would rate in the top 10%. The barrel rib is marked "+ SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS.U.S.A.PAT.JULY 10. 60. JAN. 17. FEB. 17. JULY 11. 65 & AUG. 24. 69 +" followed by a defaced "US". A small "A" ordnance sub-inspection mark is present on the left side of the frame under the cylinder and a cylinder flute (double stamped) with a "P" on a second cylinder flute. The serial number is marked on the butt and right grip panel. The left grip panel has a script letter boxed cartouche. The rear of the cylinder, barrel latch and the barrel are marked "T2." This rare and desirable U.S. martial revolver is listed by its serial number "496" in the STANDARD CATALOG OF SMITH & WESSON by Jim Supica & Richard Nahas as a Model 3 that was purchased by the U.S. government.

Very fine. The revolver retains 50% original blue finish concentrated on the frame showing a smooth brown patina down the length of the barrel typical of holster wear. Some minor pitting. The hammer retains some vivid original case colors. The grips are fine with numerous pressure dents on the bottoms and a couple minor handling marks overall. The cartouche is crisp. Mechanically fine. Overall a very fine and very rare Calvary issued #3 American. This revolver without question saw Western frontier use and was probably so beloved by the trooper it was issued to, he kept the revolver. Fearing he had "stolen" U.S. property he did his best to remove the markings.

Experimental Military Belt Holster for Colt Single Action Army and Smith & Wesson Schofield Revolver

Lot # 101 (Sale Order: 100 of 920)

Experimental Military Belt Holster for Colt Single Action Army and Smith & Wesson Schofield Revolvers

This is an example of a military belt holster for the Colt Single Action Army and Smith & Wesson Schofield revolvers. A similar holster is pictured in Richard Rattenbury's book PACKING IRON on page 30. The holster is an experimental right handed design which has often been credited to Captain James Ropes of the 8th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Ringgold, Texas. These holsters were manufactured at the San Antonio Arsenal, Texas, circa 1885-1895. Constructed of black bridle-weight leather, the holster has an extended belt loop/back shirt, a full flap top with strap closure, 10 cartridge loops sewn at the mouth. The skirt is attached to the holster by two rivets on the back of the holster body. The closure flap is stamped "314" and the flap is stamped "0136".

Fair as restored, showing overall age cracking and old crude replacement stitching on the holster body.
