Push Dagger with Sheath

Lot # 1125 (Sale Order: 126 of 1003)

Unmarked Push Dagger with Sheath

Few knives are as intuitive for thrusts as the push dagger. All the user has to do is grab the handle so that the blade protrudes between their fingers and punch to deliver a devastating attack. Due to this, they are also known as "punch daggers," and in Germany were known as "faustmesser" meaning "fist knives." This ease of use combined with their relative ease of concealment made these knives popular with people of various walks of life in the 19th century including most famously gamblers on river boats and at western saloons. Updated variations saw use in the brutal hand to hand combat of in trenches during World War I and by commandos in World War II. This antique example has a 3 1/4 inch blade, 5 3/4 inch overall length, contoured rosewood handle, and leather sheath with German silver interior and brass belt loop.

Class: Other

Good with a mix of gray and brown patina and mild pitting/oxidation on the blade and shank, some faint cracks in the handle, and holes, cracking, and flaking in the sheath.

Push Dagger with Sheath

Lot # 1127 (Sale Order: 128 of 1003)

Fine Numbered Handle Push Dagger with Sheath

These knives became popular in the U.S. in the mid-19th century. They are readily concealable, effective, and intuitive. All a user needs to do is clench the handle in their hand with the blade protruding through their fingers and punch their adversary, so anyone who can throw a decent punch could deliver a debilitating blow with one of these knives. This one has a 3 1/2 inch blade, 5 3/4 inch overall length, and dark rosewood handle with a "6" or "9" on the back. (Writer notes others numbered like this, possible New Orleans in origin, but not documented). The brown leather sheath is fitted with a German silver tip and mouth piece with a stud.

Scarce Engraved Mass. Arms Co. Maynard Primed Belt Revolver

Lot # 1130 (Sale Order: 131 of 1003)

Scarce Engraved Mass. Arms Co. Maynard Primed Belt Revolver with Hand Revolved Cylinder

When the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Massachusetts granted Samuel Colt an injunction against Mass. Arms Co. in 1851 that prevented them from making their Wesson & Leavitt revolvers, they started making hand turned revolvers, but they were never very popular and production was rather limited. This example was manufactured in the early to mid-1850s and has a small button on the bottom of the action just ahead of the trigger that releases the cylinder so that it can be manually rotated. At least 200 of these pistols were shipped to abolitionist John Brown in Kansas in 1857. Other mechanisms were also tried. One method, for example, used a trigger pull to rotate the cylinder and then the hammer was manually cocked. To make these more primitive firearms more palatable to the public, Mass Arms Co. equipped it with Maynard's tape priming system. This example has attractive scrollwork engraving on the hammer, lock, and frame; a shield with "MAYNARD'S PATENT/[patriotic eagle and shield motif]/SEP. 22. 1845" on the primer door; etched floral designs on the cylinder; "MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS" on the top strap; "257" on the barrel lug; "626" on the recoil shield and back strap; German silver blade front sight; notch rear sight; and smooth grip.

Class: Antique

Fine. 75% of the original, bright high polish blue finish remains on the barrel and barrel catch. The grip straps retain most of the original silver plating and have a dark, aged patina. The remaining components have traces of original finish, including some bright patches of case color, and primarily display gray-brown patina. There are some small patches of mild pitting and oxidation. The grip is very fine and has only mild handling marks. The markings and engraving patterns are crisp. Mechanically fine.

Lot # 1136 (Sale Order: 137 of 1003)

Measuring 14 inches overall, with a 9 inch single edged drop point blade, which is installed in a 5/16ths inch thick rectangular cross-section ricasso and tang, with inlaid silver accent bands and star designs, with some of the bands showing a subtle zig-zag edge pattern. The hilt is carved horn, with enamel in-fill accents, "33" lightly cut into the right side, and a silver collar. When the spike is out, the handle encloses the lower section of the knife blade to protect the fingers during use. The original maker and user of this knife are unrecorded, though the thick squared-off ricasso puts one in the mind of a South American field knife like the "facon" of gaucho fame.

Lot # 1144 (Sale Order: 145 of 1003)

Slotter & Company "J. Deringer" Infringement Evasion Percussion Pocket Pistol in "Peanut" Size

Produced by the Schlotterbeck brothers following Henry Deringer's 1863 lawsuit against A.J. Plate, which started over confusion as to whether or not Deringer had given Charles Schlotterbeck approval to use his name. After the decision, the brothers brought one John Deringer, a tailor with absolutely zero gun sales or production experience, in as a partner, and promptly began producing 100% legal "J. Deringer" pistols, such as this example in the ultra-compact "peanut" configuration, measuring in at only 4 3/4 inches in total length. Brass blade front and notch rear sights, with the distinctive "J. DERINGER/ PHILADELA" address on top of the breech, a pair of arched zig-zag lines on the left side, and "WART/ STEEL" on the upper right side of the barrel. The J. Deringer address is repeated on the lock plate which is decorated with finely executed scrollwork. The scrollwork is also shown on the hammer side, accent and reverse plates, the front half of the tang, shield escutcheon and the trigger guard. There is a floral blossom pattern on the escutcheons, with burst patterns on the bolster, tang screw and rear half of the tang. Both the guard and the shield have an unengraved stripe running from upper right to lower left.

Jacob Ramser of Rock Island, Illinois Pocket Watch

Lot # 1149 (Sale Order: 150 of 1003)

Jacob Ramser of Rock Island, Illinois Pocket Watch with Organized Crime Connections

This is an 11 jewel, grade 99, model 6 pocket watch which was manufactured circa 1899 and has connections to organized crime in Rock Island, Illinois. The pocket watch is an open face style with no front lid. The face is simple in style with Arabic numbers, both minute and second, a single chronograph, and is marked "Jacob Ramser/Rock Island, Ill." The movement is numbered "1485463" and is marked "SAFETY PINION/Illinois Watch Co./Springfield." The inside of the movement lid is marked with the Philadelphia Watch Co. logo and "SILVERODE/217341". The case was manufactured circa 1868-1886. An article from September 21, 1911, in "The Daily Times" of Davenport, Rock Island, and Moline details an encounter between Jacob Ramser and famous Rock Island gangster John Patrick Looney, who is portrayed in the Hollywood film "Road to Perdition". It appears that Ramser was unhappy with an article about himself that was printed in Looney's newspaper, "Rock Island News", and confronted him in the Waddell Barber Shop. An altercation broke out during the course of which Ramser was shot in the hand but managed to disarm Looney and club him over the head with the pistol.

Class: Other

Very fine overall, with some scattered handling marks and light scratches on the case. The front glass is loose. Appears to function correctly.
