DWM Model 1902 Luger Semi-Automatic Carbine

Lot # 1551 (Sale Order: 552 of 1003)

Presentation Cased DWM Model 1902 Luger Semi-Automatic Carbine with Buenos Aires Merchant Marks, Matching Stock, and Extra Magazine

Developed in the early 1900s, the Luger Carbine was conceived as a compact and agile lightweight sporting rifle. The heart of the weapon is an enlarged Luger pistol with a steel hanger integrated into the front of the frame to serve as a mount for a spring accelerator equipped forearm, which in turn helps properly cycle the extended barrel and a 1908-style stock lug on the back strap. Fitted with ramped polished bead front sight and 4-position sliding notch rear sight on the barrel, which is marked "J. CANEDO/611 RIVADAVIA. 611/Be AIRES" on top. Juan Canedo was the successor of Don Alfredo Gottling, and his shop, also known as "Casa Canedo" (the House of Canedo) and "La Portena", was a major importer of American and European firearms, the latter known to include presentation-quality Lugers, which then represented the cutting edge of handgun technology. The blank chamber is proofed "crown/B/crown/U" on the left side, with a recessed flat top bolt, "DWM" marked front toggle, and a set of lock-equipped dished toggles. The small parts are finished in straw, with niter blue pins and springs, checkered grips and a nickel finished magazine with an unmarked hardwood base. Matching "601" partial serial numbers are present on the inside of the Schnabel tip forearm and the renumbered to match mounting iron of the straight stock, both featuring sharp checkering and sling swivels, and the later fitted with a serrated horn buttplate. Also included with the gun is an extra alloy/unmarked hardwood magazine, a "crown/gothic letter" proofed loading/takedown tool, a brass barrel rod with integral grease can and an empty DWM-style cartridge box. The pistol, stock and all listed accessories fit into the included case, which is leather covered with a yellow faux-fur French-cut interior, brass hardware, and an inscribed silver plaque on the lid which reads "El Gobernador del la Provincia/Concurso de Setiembre 1907/LA PLATA" (The Governor of the Province/Contest of September 1907). La Plata was the capital of the Provence of Buenos Aires, established as a planned city in the late 1800s in response to the federalization of the actual city of Buenos Aires. The Governor of the Province at that time would be Ignacio Dario Irigoyen. While not explicitly documented, a weapon this fine would have made a fantastic award for a shooting contest or similar sporting competition.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Fine with 70% of the blue finish present, showing some light edge wear, spotting and handling marks. The grip straps have been refinished. The straw and niter blue colors have worn and darkened, with some shallow spotting. The grips are very good, with some light dings and flat spots, and the stock and forearm are both fine with attractive grain. The stock is fine with renumbered mounting iron. The custom case is good, with the lock mechanism occasionally hanging up and some mild scuffs and stains. Mechanically excellent. A fine DWM Model 1902 Luger Carbine with interesting merchant marks and presentation.

Very Early Unmarked DWM Model 1900 Luger

Lot # 1552 (Sale Order: 553 of 1003)

Unusual DWM Model 1900 Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol

Manufactured at an unspecified date, this Model 1900 pattern Luger Pistol is completely unmarked on the exterior; no nation-relevant crests or addresses, not even a DWM monogram or "crown" proof. Internally is serial number 5 stamped in the top sear frame, which lays perpendicular to the bore axis. Notes provided by the consignor attribute the pistol as a commercial prototype; the presence of the serrated safety bar suggests the American Eagle variant. Fixed sights, with the 1900 style flat top bolt and dished toggles, serrated thumb safety lever, and straw finished small components, including the sear bar. A hold-open device is pinned into the frame, with a flat mainspring and niter blue screws and springs. The grips are checkered walnut, with a small stamp (similar to the "flaming bomb" seen on the early American test magazines) on the wood magazine base. An untranslated pencil marking ("zu (illegible)") is present on the inside of the right grip panel.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very fine as assembled, with 75% of the rust blue finish. The grip straps are mostly a brown patina visible under strong light, with bright wear and handling marks overall, as well as some small pitting on the grip safety and around the magazine catch. The grips are very fine, with some minor dings and dark spots, and the straw colors are generally strong. Mechanically excellent. One will have to draw their own conclusion about this pistol!

Extremely Rare DWM 1900 Long Barrel Prototype Luger

Lot # 1555 (Sale Order: 556 of 1003)

Important and Extremely Rare DWM 1900 Long Barrel Prototype Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol and Rig with Rare Matching Push Button Stock

This is an extremely rare, all original, DWM "Prototype" Model 1900 Luger pistol made with a special 6 7/8 inch, rapid taper barrel and matching prototype, "push-button" shoulder stock. All of these early prototype Lugers were made in unique and individual configurations with no two being exactly alike. These pistols were all numbered with a special, five-digit type serial number in the 10000 range with this specific example numbered "10034". The prototype pistol barrel is very unique being 6 7/8 inch long with the fast taper configuration that is stamped with the "Crown/B, U, and G" proofmarks with the full serial number along with "172.28" indicating the bore diameter and the "Crown/B and U" proofs on receiver, breechblock and front toggle link. The other rare/unique aspect of this prototype pistol is that the heel or lower back strap area has been machined for a stock lug (which had not been made before this time) and the pistol has been fitted with an even rarer matching numbered "push button/prototype" attaching stock iron and original flat board style, shoulder stock. This "push-button" prototype stock iron, was the original design, developed by George Luger and was discarded in favor of the simpler locking lever type mechanism. It is estimated that not more than 4-5 of these push-button prototype stocks and attaching irons were ever manufactured, certainly making it as rare as the pistol itself. The pistol itself has the early style dished toggles with toggle lock on the right side, and early flat/recessed breech bolt. The frame has the correct pattern, polished lower safety area with the second type thumb safety that has the short domed checkered pad. The pistol is correctly fitted with the narrow trigger. This beautiful prototype Luger is fitted with matching numbered full checkered wood grips. This outstanding rig is complete with a very early, correct style, black leather holster with shoulder strap and original cleaning rod with oiler along with an original leather double magazine pouch and three original unnumbered tin plate early magazines. It has been noted that this rare prototype Luger rig originally came out of Chile in 1990 and at one time had an original accompanying certificate from the Banco De Pruebas De Chile which bore an intertwined "B/P" proof inside a shield on the certificate. This exceptionally rare Luger also has that same intertwined "BP" inside a shield proof of the Banco De Pruebas.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent with 98% plus original blue finish and 90% plus of the original straw color on the small components. All of the numbers match, (including the attaching iron as noted above) with all three of the wood base magazines, along with the hold open device and firing pin, properly un-numbered. The grips are also excellent with only a couple of chipped diamonds, extremely minor light wear, sharp checkering and an attractive wood grain showing throughout. The magazines are all excellent with light wear. The stock is also excellent with only light handling and storage marks on the sides and 85% of the blue finish on the attaching iron itself. The holster and straps are sound with light flaking and show little wear with a crackled surface. Cleaning rod/oiler are excellent. The mechanics are crisp. This extremely rare DWM prototype Model 1900 Luger pistol/shoulder stock rig are museum quality and suitable for even the most discerning and advanced collector.

Rare Documented German Mauser Factory HSc Cutaway Pistol

Lot # 1556 (Sale Order: 557 of 1003)

Rare Documented German Mauser Factory HSc Cutaway Pistol

This is a very rare example of a Mauser production cutaway HSc pistol. This specific example is actually pictured on page 29 in the book "The Mauser HSc Pistol" by Burnham and Theodore. It has been extensively cut away on both sides of the pistol, probably as an early factory instruction pistol, or as an in-house engineering model. The cutaway areas completely show all the internal workings of the pistol to include the very front frame section, which is very unusual as all it shows is the lower front frame extension area. It did not have a left grip panel as those area are also completely cutaway to show the inter workings, i.e. the magazine catch and slide release area and the hammer spring area inside the rear area of the frame. The right side shows the sear and disconnector area as well as the rotating safety/firing pin block. The top area of the slide shows where the firing pin and extractor/extractor spring are located, as well as the chamber area and down the entire length of the barrel. The complete pistol is devoid of any factory markings, proof marks, or serial number. It clearly was not intended as a field example as there are too many cutaway areas on the pistol. Most of the metal surface are in the white, to include the magazine. A very scarce and probably one of a kind early cutaway Mauser HSc pistol.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent as correct factory "in the white" finish. The right grip is in very fine condition with visible checkering on the side with some light handling marks. A very scarce example of a rare factory cutaway HSc Mauser semi-automatic pistol.

Erma Erfurt - Z Flare

Lot # 1559 (Sale Order: 560 of 1003)

Scarce World War II Erma (ayf) Code Nazi Kampfpistole Flare Pistol

This is an example of a WWII Nazi Kampfpistole as manufactured by the Erma factory. The Leuchtpistole (single barrel, break-open flare pistol) design was originally developed by the Walther company in 1936, with several thousands eventually manufactured by the Walther, Berlin-Lubeker and Erma factories during WWII. This Kampfpistole design was actually based on the original Leuchtpistole (flare pistols) design, only they were intended to be used as both a signaling flare pistol and an "anti-personal" weapon, as they were fitted with a unique rifled barrel that could shoot a 25mm rifle grenade. The same type of round that was used in the K98 service rifle grenade launchers. When used in the "Kampfpistole" role it was fitted with a folding, sheet metal stock assembly, equipped with a beige butt pad and a spring-loaded, barrel mounted, high angle aiming sight. The stock attachment was held in place on the rear of the frame/grip area via a threaded cross-bolt with two additional locking screws. A wide opening allows the user access to the weapon's hammer. The left side of the barrel is engraved with the large letter "Z" which was filled with luminous paint, to identify this model as having the rifled bore. The left side of the frame is marked with a "ayf 42" code indicating it was manufactured in 1942 by the ERMA factory. The right side of the frame and barrel are both stamped with the double "Eagle 280" Waffenamt proofs along with a single "Eagle" firing proof, and the frame and barrel are both stamped with the matching serial number "6676". A curved locking lever opens the spring-assisted barrel that also serves as part of the front of the trigger guard bow. This example has an all black anodized finished with the desirable rifled aluminum barrel and checkered Bakelite grips, while the stock and barrel sight are painted in a light brown, sand/desert color overall. This example does not have the very rare round side mounted aiming sight. This weapon was soon outclassed by the more modern anti-tank rifles, the Panzerfaust and the Panzerschreck.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very fine with 75% of the black anodized exterior finish overall on the pistol, with considerable black finish loss on the edges and high spot as well as the upper areas of the barrel and receiver and the lower rear area of the back strap. The stock assembly and barrel mounted sight retain 85% of its desert tan painted exterior finish overall with paint loss on the edges and high spots overall. A scarce example of a rare Kampfpistole.

Hermann Goering's Surrender PPK, w/Case, Research

Lot # 1563 (Sale Order: 564 of 1003)

Historic Factory Engraved and Gold Plated Walther Model PPK Semi-Automatic Pistol, Hermann Goering's Sidearm at the Time of His Surrender, with Case and Extensive Research

Taken completely aside from it's historical attribution, this is a very nice factory engraved Walther PPK semi-automatic pistol, showing a fine gold finish and over 90% coverage factory engraving. The majority of the engraving is fine Germanic oak leaf patterns, with additional punch dot and zig-zag borders, geometric in-fills, and scroll accents as well as a delicate gold inlay on the traditional Walther legend and logo on the left side of the slide. Matching external numbers are present on the right side of the slide and frame, with Nazi-era "eagle/N" proofs on the chamber, muzzle and slide; an uncommon gray-tone single piece grip with a starburst-engraved gold screw, and a gold-finished magazine with scroll decorated flat floor plate. The pistol comes with a red leather bound case with a white velvet lined French-cut interior, "WALTHER/PPK" in gold inside the lid, three inert cartridges, and a vintage postcard featuring Hermann Goering. Even if one were to completely disregard the history, this would be an extremely nice PPK worthy of a place in an advanced collection. That said, the history makes it into something else entirely. This was the handgun that Field Marshall Hermann Goering surrendered to American forces at the close of World War Two. At war's end, Goering found himself in a supremely dangerous position, having severely alienated Adolf Hitler by attempting to officially assert himself as Hitler's 2nd in command and heir; at that point Hitler was effectively trapped in Berlin, and his capture or death seemed extremely imminent. Convinced that this was a prelude to a coup, Hitler had Goering stripped of rank and put under house arrest by the SS. A few days after Hitler's suicide, Goering was sprung from captivity by Luftwaffe soldiers, and made a beeline towards the Americans; this was pretty much his only remaining play, as falling into unfriendly German or Soviet hands would likely not end well for him. Sending a top aide forward to make arrangements, Goering got stuck on the road before he could make a meeting with elements of the 636th Tank Destroyer Battalion led by General Robert Stack. Stack's unit was positioned well ahead of enemy lines and occupied a castle still populated by armed SS men led by Waldemar Fegelein, brother of Hermann Fegelein, brother in law to Eva Braun. General Stack ordered Lieutenant Jerome Shapiro, a New York raised officer with the 142nd Intelligence & Reconnaissance Platoon, to take a detachment and find Goering. Taking a jeep, four men and Goering's aide, Shapiro set out into unsecured Austrian territory, in real and present danger of getting shot by any pockets of German troops who hadn't gotten word that the war was over, and found Goering's convoy. Approaching the marshall with weapon drawn, Shapiro found him to be very cooperative. He also found him to be in possession of two handguns. One, a Smith & Wesson revolver, he intended to deliver personally to the President of the United States in a ceremonial formal surrender of Nazi Germany; he was allowed to retain this pistol sans ammo, though the honor of formally ending the war in Europe would fall to Admiral Doenitz, and the revolver and his reichsmarshall baton are currently on display at the West Point Museum. The second was this Walther, that Goering handed to Lieutenant Shapiro; eyewitness accounts specify that Goering handed the pistol over in a red case. Returning to the castle at the head of a convoy of Luftwaffe men and ranking Nazi officers, Shapiro among the soldiers responsible for keeping Goering and his family safe and secure, which included making sure that none of the Luftwaffe or SS troopers came into conflict or, in the case of the latter, tried to execute their prisoner, who was technically a fugitive from Nazi "justice". When the lines were crossed and Goering was successfully delivered to the Allies there was good news and bad news for Shapiro; good news, he would be allowed to retain the pistol as a war trophy and was awarded the Bronze Star for the adventure, and bad news, Goering took a liking to him and specifically requested Shapiro for his guard detail, belaying his return to the States until the Nuremberg Trials closed out. During his captivity, he reportedly parceled out several of his possessions to the guards, which in Shapiro's case included his party armband, a wristwatch that was reportedly a gift from Hitler, a typewriter, and other items. On the day before his scheduled hanging, Goering committed suicide via potassium cyanide; which was smuggled to him by another guard. Returning home with the assorted loot, Shapiro became a minor celebrity, speaking of the experience at schools and showing off the

Rare Late World War II Nazi "Last Ditch" VG2 Bolt Action Rifle

Lot # 1564 (Sale Order: 565 of 1003)

Rare Late World War II Nazi "Last Ditch" VG2 Bolt Action Rifle

This is an example of a late WWII VG2 bolt action rifle. This series of rifles was one of the last ditch, war expedient manufacturing concepts used by the Germans in late WWII. Although crude in appearance, they were very functional and usable by the average German solder or civilians in late 1945. It was designed as a traditional bolt action type rifle fitted with a K43 box magazine. The complete rifle however is very different in that the receiver was produced as a flat, sheet metal stamping which was then formed over a round mandrel to give it the appearance of a round receiver, with a separate front and rear receiver ring machined separately and then inserted inside the stamping and spot welded in place. It used a traditional, internally rifled barrel that was inserted into the front receiver ring and secured via a through pin under the barrel. It used a simple round body bolt with traditional front locking lugs that was cast or lathe turned. It was bored out from the rear for the simple firing pin assembly, that was inserted from the rear of the bolt, which was held in place by a simple lathe turned bolt handle, inserted through the side of the bolt body. The complete trigger group with internal components (all of which appear to be sheet metal stampings) that were inserted into the rear/underside of the receiver and also spot welded in place. The forend and buttstock were both then just inserted into the front and rear ends of the stamped receiver and held in place by two lateral cross pins. The rear sight is nothing more than a single sheet metal tube welded to the top of the receiver in which a simple round machined rear sight was insert that functioned as a rear sight notch. The front sight is nothing more than a piece of sheet metal steel that was formed over a fixture and then pinned in place on the front end of the barrel. The barrel is marked with two Luftwaffe type Eagle proofs with a number "15" inside, followed by the manufacturer's code of "bky", identified as the marking of the Bohmische Waffenfabrik factory in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The left side of the receiver is marked "7809". It is complete with one K43 magazine.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Extremely fine with 90% plus of the original blue/black type finish overall with edge and high spot wear overall mixed with some flaking of he finish on the sides of the receiver. The wood components are both in very fine condition overall with a nice dark matching color showing light handling marks and scratches on the sides. Mechanically fine. A nice looking late WWII last ditch bolt action rifle.

Scarce and Desirable World War II Nazi J.P. Sauer & Sohn

Lot # 1566 (Sale Order: 567 of 1003)

Scarce and Desirable World War II Nazi J.P. Sauer & Sohn Luftwaffe M30 Survival Drilling with Metal Storage Case and Accessories

This World War II Luftwaffe M 30 Drilling was manufactured by J.P. Sauer and Sohn. This scarce, high grade Sauer Drilling was issued in limited quantities to Luftwaffe aircrews in North Africa during 1942-43 as a survival weapon. The combination rifle and shotgun featured a Greener cross bolt action with 12 gauge side by side barrels and a 9.3X74R lower rifle barrel. A Greener type safety is located on the left side of the action. The drilling has dual triggers; when the barrel selector on the tang is moved forward a rifle sight on the ribs is elevated and the forward, single-set trigger fires the rifle barrel. The rear trigger fires the left barrel which is regulated to shoot Brenneke slugs to the rifle sight's point of aim. Moving the selector switch to the rear allows the front trigger to fire the right shotgun barrel; all three barrels can be fired without lowering the gun. The blue barrel group has a matted rib, a rifle front sight with silver bead and a sling swivel on the rifle barrel. The receiver, trigger guard and furniture have a casehardened finish with vivid case colors. The European walnut stock and forearm are oil finished with fine checkered panels. The stock has an oval cheekpiece on the left side and is fitted with a casehardened pistol grip cap, a sling swivel and a black plastic, serrated buttplate embossed with the Sauer "SS" monogram. The right side of the stock and right barrel chamber are stamped with large Luftwaffe eagle and swastika insignia. A Luftwaffe "Stick Eagle/2" acceptance mark is stamped on the top of the forward barrel locking lug. The receiver, trigger guard, pistol grip cap, forend latch and receiver screws are highlighted with simple, well-executed scroll engraving. The Sauer "SS" monogram is boldly stamped on the underside of the receiver. Smaller "SS" markings are located on the right receiver rail and on the side of the rifle barrel chamber. An oval panel in the barrel rib is engraved with the rifle caliber "9,3 x 74.R". The legend "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL" is on both sides of the receiver and on the breeches of both shotgun barrels. The top of the shotgun barrel chambers and the left side of the rifle barrel are marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTHAL" with a shell motif at either end of the legend. The full serial number is stamped on the left side of the receiver rail and on the underside of the rifle barrel. The partial serial number "5863" is stamped on the inside of the forearm. All of the serial numbers match. The "Eagle/N" proof mark is stamped on the underside of both shotgun chambers, on the left side of the rifle barrel chamber and on the right receiver rail. The shotgun barrel chambers are stamped with the gauge "12/65", and the rifle chamber is stamped with the caliber "9,3X74R". The drilling is complete with the original aluminum storage case. The case has a leather luggage type handle, two steel latches and exterior painted a dark Luftwaffe gray. The lid is stenciled: "Drilling M.30/mit Munition und Zubehor/ce" in three lines. The case interior has a natural aluminum finish and has wooden, felt covered, partitions to retain the drilling and accessories. A list of the contents is stenciled on the inside of the lid. The case is complete with: (1) reproduction manual entitled "Drilling M.30" (2) scarce, original russet leather sling (3) two sealed, 10-round cartons of FN rifle cartridges (4) and a large carton of Russian 12 gauge shells. Also included with the group is an 8x10-inch photo of Reichmarschall Herman Goering and a copy of a U.S. capture certificate dated February 14, 1946. The certificate lists "1 German Rifle, 2 Bayonets (sic) and 1 sword" with no serial numbers or other details.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. The drilling shows light to moderate handling wear. The barrel retains nearly 95% of the original blue finish with some thinning above the forearm and scattered scratches and scuff marks. The casehardened finish is beginning to thin and fading to silver on contact points. The portions of the receiver with less handling wear retain strong case colors. The stock and forearm are in fine reoiled condition. The checkered surfaces show moderate handling wear and there are several minor dents on the stock and forearm. There is a small chip missing from the right side of stock where the stock meets the frame. The Luftwaffe eagle on the stock shows some handling wear. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The case is in very good overall condition and retains most of the original dark gray paint. The interior is in excellent condition. The leather handle has split through but is still complete. The scarce sling is in fine condition. This is a very fine example of a high grade J.P. Sauer drilling issued to an elite Luftwaffe aircrew.

Scarce German Navy Marked Erma 22LR Luger Conversion Kit

Lot # 1570 (Sale Order: 571 of 1003)

Scarce German Navy Marked Erma 22LR Luger Conversion Kit with Scarce Navy Marked Case

Manufactured by Erma, several parts of this conversion kit bear the very early 1930s pattern "eagle/M" German Navy marking, suggesting manufacture towards the very beginning of Hitler's rule over the country. The barrel sleeve, breech toggle assembly, cleaning rod, rod guide and case are also marked "N183", suggesting issue through a North Sea arsenal, and the breech and sleeve are matching serial numbered "924A" Also included with the lot is a proper style magazine and a spare brass collar for the barrel sleeve, allowing use with both the standard 4 inch barrel Luger and the extended 6 inch Navy Luger. Per notes from author and expert Charles Kenyon (copy of signed letter included), this is an "ultra-rare" Navy Luger accessory, with military issue cases in general being notably hard to find, and Navy-marked examples even more so.

Class: Other

Very fine, with 80% plus factory blue finish, showing some pitting on the magazine and mild handling marks overall. Some small components are absent. The case is very good, with some light stains and wear. A scarce piece of military kit that would make a fine addition to any collection of military Lugers or Kriegsmarine artifacts.

Uniform of General Karl Mauss, Plus Knight's Cross w/Diamonds

Lot # 1574 (Sale Order: 575 of 1003)

Historic Wehrmacht Parade Uniform Set for Generalleutnant Karl Mauss, Wartime Commander of Rommel's 7th Panzer Division, Complete with Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, with Extensive Documentation

Born in 1898 in Ploen, Karl Mauss got his start like many German World War II generals in World War I, having enlisted in the armed forces in 1914. Active with Jaeger Battalion #9 out of Lauenburg, he was noted as the youngest man in his division. Active on the Western, Eastern and Italian Fronts (including action at the Battle of the Somme), he earned the Iron Cross in both 2nd and 1st Class, as well as an officer's commission. While a very talented scout, the young man had aspirations towards flight, eventually securing a posting as a flight cadet. During the final outing for his flight training, Mauss' aircraft went into a near fatal dive from 3,800 meters; as the cause of the crash was determined to be a mechanical issue with the rudder controls (attributed as deliberate tampering by an unknown party), he received his pilot's certificate while laid up with multiple broken bones. After his recovery and the end of the war, he was shifted to the reserves, and spent some time as a paramilitary fighter, active with the Freikorps Oberland (later a core unit of the Brownshirts in Bavaria) and Marinebrigade Ehrhardt (which participated in the Kapp Putsch against the Weimar Republic), seeing action in the suppression of the Silesian Uprisings. After this, he settled down a bit and tried his hand at civilian life, dabbling in the publishing field before committing himself to the study of dentistry, earning his doctorate in the late 1920s and establishing a private practice. In 1934, he left the dental field and returned to the Army, attaining the rank of Major by 1938. Over the course of World War II, he led the 20th Motorized Infantry into Poland, the 10th Panzer Division into France, and also participate in the Invasion of Russia, both the initial charge towards Moscow and at Kursk. In January of 1944, Mauss was placed in command of the 7th Panzer Division, previously Rommel's infamous "ghost division" during the Invasion of France; this period of the unit's history under Mauss' command was mainly spent being driven back towards Germany by the Soviets, with the occasional counter-attack punctuating a number of retreats, rear guard actions, and evacuations, often acting as a "mobile pocket" in areas already overrun by the Red Army. Much like Rommel, Mauss preferred leading from the front as much as physically possible, and earned a reputation with both the Nazis and the Soviets as a skilled operator. On February 2nd of 1945, Mauss was scouting ahead of his unit during a counter-attack when his command car took a direct hit, killing the other occupants and inflicting grave injuries on the General, requiring the amputation of one of his legs. Short a limb and confined to a stretcher, he continued to lead his unit another 4 days before finally being evacuated. Following a personal appeal by Mauss to the head of personnel, the 7th was evacuated via sea and was later able to surrender to the British instead of the Soviets. Reports conflict on his final rank; in post-war private life he was known to use the rank of Generalleutnant in correspondence, but his biography in the book "Knights of the Reich" (included) mentions a final promotion to General der Panzertruppen in April of 1945. Over the course of World War II, he earned the Clasps for the 2nd and 1st Class Iron Cross, the German Cross in Gold, as well as the following ranks of the Knight's Cross: the Knight's cross in November 1941, the Oak Leaves in 1943, the Swords in 1944, and the Diamonds in 1945. Instituted over the course of World War II, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross started as the top combat valor award of Nazi Germany, and steadily escalated as winners continued to perform feats worthy of recognition. Though technically there were two higher decorations, the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds in Gold (given to one Luftwaffe aviator), and the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross (given to Hermann Goering, then retracted before war's end), the Diamonds were functionally the pinnacle of awards, being presented only 27 times. Spending time in British captivity after the war, Mauss was passed over for a position with the Bundeswehr, and returned to his dental practice, living a quiet life before passing on in 1959. The lot hinges around three groupings: 1) A uniform set appointed for and marked to Mauss as a Generalleutnant, 2) an original vintage Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds, paired with one reproduction, and 3) a tool case marked to the commander of the 7th Panzer Division. 1) The uniform set consists of tunic, breeches and belt. The tunic is a typical "feldgrau
