Early Pattern German Gewehr 98 Bolt Action Rifle

Lot # 1625 (Sale Order: 626 of 1003)

Unique Early Pattern German Gewehr 98 Serviceman's Target Bolt Action Rifle

Devoid of maker's marks, this Gewehr 98 Serviceman's Target pattern rifle bears a number of "crown" and "crown/N" proofs, commercial-style "2,75 gr.B.P./Stm.C" marking on the left receiver ring, and "Gew.98" on the sidewall. The sight is the old "ski ramp" style, with no evidence of conversion from the "Patrone 88" round ball cartridge to the later standard "S Patrone" Spitzer-tip round. A recurring number "13" is seen on multiple small components, though not the barrel, receiver or bolt, and others are marked "A" and/or "Z". Smooth pistol grip stock, with a flat steel buttplate.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very good with 50% of the blue finish, showing a mixed gray patina on the rear sight base and receiver, mixed brown on the barrel bands, floor plate and trigger guard, and mild handling marks and spotting overall. The revarnished stock shows a number of light scratches and dents. Mechanically fine.

WWI Mauser T-Gewehr 1918 Anti-Tank Rifle with Bipod

Lot # 1629 (Sale Order: 630 of 1003)

Desirable World War I Mauser Tankgewehr Bolt Action Anti-Tank Rifle with Bipod

Manufactured by the Germans in 1917 and 1918 in response to Allied tank assaults, the Mauser Tankgewehr 18, or "Elefant-Buechse", was the first dedicated man-portable anti-tank weapon. Weighing in at 37 pounds, the T-Gewehr was capable of penetrating the armor of the day and could disable an enemy vehicle in 6-10 shots. A historically important weapon, the T-Gewehr gave birth to the anti-tank rifle and was the grandfather of the modern anti-material rifle. Blade front and tangent rear sights, with matching numbers on the barrel, receiver, bolt components, bolt catch, barrel band and trigger guard, the Mauser banner over "1918" on the receiver ring, and a smooth two-piece replacement buttstock numbered "5062" (rifle is number 5037) with pistol grip stock. With a swiveling steel bipod that mounts to the barrel band.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very good as assembled (see above). The metal shows a mixed gray patina overall, with spotting, a few areas of light pitting, and scattered handling marks. The stock is a good mixed numbered replacement, with some cracking and dents, as well as a replaced recoil bolt with washers. Bipod is repainted. Notes provided by the consignor describe the weapon as "non-firing"; aside from the firing pin being able to slip off the sear with the safety on, no significant mechanical issues were noted.

Colt - Super 38

Lot # 1635 (Sale Order: 636 of 1003)

Desirable Abercrombie & Fitch Shipped Pre-World War II Colt "Super Match" 38 Super Semi-Automatic Pistol with Factory Letter and A&F Marked Leather Holster

This is an excellent example of an original pre-war Colt Model 1911A1 Super Match semi-automatic pistol manufactured in mid 1939. The Colt factory letter that accompanies this pistol is dated April 2001 and verifies it as a 1-piece shipment in June 1939 to Abercrombie & Fitch Company in New York. These .38 Super Match pistols were manufactured concurrently with the standard Colt 38 Supers, except they featured a deluxe, hand honed action, checkered match trigger with a hand polished super smooth trigger pull. Additionally, they received a high polished Colt factory blued finish with all checkered walnut grip panels. Approximately 5,000 of these special higher grade target pistols were produced in total. The right side of the matching serialized slide is marked "SUPER MATCH/COLT SUPER 38/AUTOMATIC" followed by the Rampant Colt motif. The opposite side of the slide has Colt's address markings above their 1897-1913 patent dates. The upper left front of the trigger guard is marked with a capital letter "T" over the Colt "VP" (verified proof) inside a small triangle. The right side is marked "80". It has the wide, high target type factory front sight and the factory installed fixed rear sight. It is fitted with the original Colt blued Super 38 barrel that is marked on the left side: "COLT SUPER 38 AUTO MATCH" with the circled "MB" match barrel markings on the side of the barrel lug. It has the polished chamber, checkered slide lock, thumb safety, and arched mainspring housing, along with the standard Colt wide spur, checkered hammer. It is complete with one all-blued magazine marked "COLT SUPER/38 AUTO" on the base plate. It comes with one extra original Colt marked 38 Super magazine and a very nice open top leather holster manufactured by Abercrombie & Fitch and so stamped on the back side.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent with 98% plus of the original high polish blued finish overall with just a hint of holster edge wear visible on the front end of the slide and the side of the trigger where it has been hand cycled/dry fired. The grips are in excellent condition with a nice matching dark walnut color overall with sharp distinct checkering on both sides with two very small, light pressure dents on the right side. Mechanically excellent. The holster is in very fine condition with a nice medium color with tight, latigo stitching around the edge. A really super high condition Colt .38 Super Match pistol.

Colt - 1905

Lot # 1637 (Sale Order: 638 of 1003)

Colt Model 1905 Military Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is an attractive Colt Military Model 1905 semi-automatic pistol that was manufactured in late 1906. This was Colt's first real entry into the semi-automatic pistol field with a gun that was chambered the new 45 ACP round. This exact model was the true forerunner to the Model 1911 series of pistol, which as we know ushered in 80 years of Colt Model 1911 production. The right side of the slide is marked "AUTOMATIC COLT/CALIBRE 45 RIMLESS SMOKELESS" in front of the ejection port, and the left side is marked in two blocks "PATENTED/APR. 20. 1897. SEPT. 9. 1902. DEC. 19. 1905." and "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." with the circled Rampant Colt behind the serrations. The serial number (266) is located on the left side of the frame above the trigger guard bow and it does not have any of the customary early Colt factory sub-inspector proofs or markings. It does have the early spur hammer with the half-cock notch and casehardened finish. The grips are that early light colored checkered walnut versions with the diamond pattern around the screws. The pistols has the Colt high-polish blue finish overall with the trigger, extractor and magazine release, having the Colt niter blued finish. Includes an unmarked all blue magazine.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very good as professionally refinished with 90% of the bright high polish blue finish overall with a 2 inch section of dark brown patina visible on the lower right side of the slide directly at the slide markings, along with an area on the underside of the frame (see photo). The other smaller parts retain 90% of their bright nitre blue finish with 80% of the vivid case colors remaining on the hammer. The grips are in excellent condition with their original checking on both sides showing only very minor light handling marks with most of the original varnish remaining along the edges. Mechanically excellent.

Colt Model 1905 Pistol

Lot # 1638 (Sale Order: 639 of 1003)

Very Scarce Colt Combination Leather Shoulder Stock/Holster for the Early Colt Model 1905 Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is a solid example of a very scarce original combination leather shoulder stock/holster for the Colt Model 1905 semiautomatic pistol. It is estimated that less than 500 of these rare Colt produced leather combination shoulder stocks/holster were ever produced with only a very few even know to exist today. The primitive leather tanning process back then turned out to be extremely harsh on any leather product, making any example extremely rare today. There were two different lots of Model 1905 pistols that were produced to use this specific holster. They all had their back straps machined (grooved) on the outer rear edges of the frame to allow the brass mounting hardware to be slid into place. This specific piece has the original/unmarked large brass hardware on the front end of the holster with the latching mechanism on the underside. It has a single large flap on the front and a single belt loop on the rear that is held in place via a small metal buckle. The holster itself measure approximately 11 inches long by 6 inches wide and is completely unmarked.

Class: Other

Fair with a nice original brown/black matching color on the face of the leather overall. The stitching on the edge of the holster is complete. However, the leather has deteriorated in two locations: one, on the rear upper rear end of the flap, and the other area is on the lower front edge behind the brass hardware. Both have some type of old glue repair that has come loose, however both probably could be corrected by a true leather conservator. The hardware and latch mechanism are complete and functional. This is truly an extremely scarce and highly desirable early Colt combination leather shoulder stock/holster. There are more Colt 1905 Military Models slotted for stock than there are stocks to fit them!

Colt Model 1911A1 National Match with ACE Kit

Lot # 1639 (Sale Order: 640 of 1003)

Pre-World War II Colt National Match Semi-Automatic Pistol Shipped to Colt President A. Foster Jr. with Colt Factory Documentation and a Colt 22-45 ACE Conversion Kit in a Factory Presentation Case

This is a highly desirable pre-war Colt National Match semi-automatic pistol that was originally shipped to the "loan account" of Albert Foster Jr., President of Colt Firearms Company and has been subsequently assembled with a "U" serial numbered Colt 22-45 Service Model ACE conversion kit. Both are stored/housed in walnut factory case. Both the Colt National Match pistol and the Colt Service Model ACE conversion kit are accompanied with Colt factory letters dated October 1994. The National Match pistol was originally sold in June 1939. It was returned to the factory and reshipped to "L. Babchin" in New Jersey in July 1939. The conversion kit was shipped to A-H Gun Service, Hackensack, NJ, on July 29, 1939, as a 1 gun shipment. These early National Match pistols were manufactured with basic accuracy enhancements of the time which included hand fitting of the slide to the frame for a close tight fit and then hand fitting a specially selected Match barrel and front bushing. The other improvement was the hand honing and fitting of all the critical internal parts to provide a super smooth, glass like action. This National Match pistol is doubly scarce in that it is fitted with the rare early pre-war Schwartz safety device. Colt began production of the National Match Government Model .45 in 1932, and only a very limited number were actually produced before the outbreak of WWII, primarily due to the manufacturing cost. The slide has the standard two-line, two-block markings of the Hartford address with the 1897-1913 patent dates. The obverse is marked in one-line "NATIONAL MATCH COLT" followed by "AUTOMATIC/CALIBER.45" followed by the Rampant Colt trademark. The frame is marked "GOVERNMENT MODEL" above the serial number (C194645). "60" is on the trigger guard bow, and a "P" assembler's mark is over the Colt "VP/Triangle" proofmark. The slide has the matching serial number under the firing pin stop. The left side of the barrel lug is stamped with the encircled letters "M.B." with "COLT 45 AUTO MATCH" directly above that on the barrel. There is a capital "G" Colt provisional inspector stamp on top of the frame by the disconnector hole. The feed ramp is polished bright. The half-tone magazine is marked "COLT/45 AUTO" on the floor plate. The complimentary Colt conversion kit has the same style two-line, address and patent dates on the left side with "COLT SERVICE MODEL CONVERSION/ACE/.22 LONG RIFLE/UNIT 22-45" markings on the right side. As noted, this example has the wartime serial number of "U-1004" on top indicating manufacture in 1941/42. It is fitted with the early Colt fully adjustable rear sight and the pre-war wide, high target front sight. The conversion kit includes the original 22 LR barrel with its floating chamber, the ejector, firing pin and recoil spring, guide and cap, slide stop lever and "COLT 22/ACE L.R./SERVICE MODEL" marked magazine. Both the pistol and conversion kit have their original high polish commercial blue finish with original checkered walnut grips. As noted, everything is housed in a factory presentation case with a French fitted interior with green felt lining.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent with 90% plus of the original blue finish with only minor edge and high spot wear overall, some thinning/scratches and a couple very fine pin-prick erosion spots on the front grip strap, and the usual drag line under the slide stop lever. The grips are also excellent with nice, sharp, distinct checkering on both sides showing only minor handling marks. The conversion kit is also excellent with 98% of the original blue finish overall and only minor edge wear on the front edges of the slide and the outside area of the barrel from cycling and light firing. The factory presentation case is fine with most of the refinished varnish visible on the outside and the hinges and lock complete (no key). A desirable documented cased Colt National Match pistol and 22-45 conversion unit.

Colt Super 38 Pistol Factory Inscribed to T&WA Pilot

Lot # 1640 (Sale Order: 641 of 1003)

Historic Documented Pre-War Colt Super .38 Semi-Automatic Pistol Factory Inscribed to a Transcontinental & Western Air Pilot with Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letters lists this pistol with a 5 inch barrel in .38 Super, blue finish, type of stocks not listed, and factory engraved "T & WA No. 32" on the receiver when shipped to Smith Brothers Hardware Co., Columbus, Ohio, as part of a 42 gun shipment. Factory records suggests shipment occurred on October 31 or November 1, 1930. This is one of only 42 pre-WWII factory Super 38 pistols in an initial shipment having the "T & WA" factory engraving. Two subsequent purchases occurred within the year. The left side of the frame is factory engraved "T & W.A. No. 32" (see factory letter), and the reverse side of the frame has the serial number. "T & W.A," references Transcontinental & Western Air. In 1939, famed aviator and aviation mogul Howard Hughes became the principal shareholder of Transcontinental & Western Air, and the airline was officially rebranded Trans World Airlines in 1950. This pistol was issued to T&WA pilot Otto Ferguson. Pilots were armed when carrying U.S. mail on commercial flights as required by law. On April 7, 1936, Ferguson was piloting a Douglas DC-2 on a flight carrying passengers and mail when the plane crashed in poor weather. Twelve people were fatally injured and 2 were severely injured. Ferguson was among the dead. At the time of the crash this pistol was in Ferguson's possession. The pistol was returned to Ferguson's family following the recovery effort. An accompanying archive attests to the pistol's provenance in a notarized letter from Ferguson's grandson. The archive also includes the Department of Commerce report on the 1936 aircraft accident that killed Ferguson, Ferguson's WWI Air Service discharge paper, Air Service wallet, airline pilot photo, T&WA business card, and consignor research. The pistol was featured on the cover of the Texas Gun Collectors Spring 2007 issue.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very good. The pistol retains 30% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The replacement grips are very good showing some worn checkering. Mechanically excellent. A rare factory inscribed Transcontinental & Western Air documented Super .38 pistol that is missing from the most advanced Colt semi-automatic pistol collections. A rare piece of Colt and aviation history that one will look a long time to find and acquire.

This pistol is accompanied by a Colt factory letter dated Sept 2001 that verifies the original configuration of this pistol and the one-gun shipment to Thurman Randle & Company in November 1938. Mr. Randle was an early rifle and pistol competitor and operated a very successful small arms and shooting equipment mail order business prior to WWII. During WWII, he served as a commissioned officer from 1942-45 and was tasked with organizing and implementing the Navy's small arms training program which was designed to train all incoming Navy personal. It is estimated that through his efforts, along with 600 officers and instructors, trained over two million sailors during WWII. He served as NRA president from 1944-1946 and was a close friend of George Whittington for whom the NRA Whittington Center is named. This lot is accompanied with documents and photos from his catalogs and pictures. This example has the very desirable Schwartz safety device and an adjustable rear sight. The right side of the slide is stamped "NATIONAL MATCH COLT" followed by "AUTOMATIC/CALIBRE .45" followed by a Rampant Colt. The left side has the standard Colt two line address and patent dates. The matching serial number is stamped on the back side of the slide under the firing pin stop. The blued barrel has a bright chamber that is marked "COLT 45 AUTO" with the circled "MB" proof on the left side of the lug, with an "S" proof on the right side. The left side of the trigger guard is stamped "P" over a Colt factory "VP" triangle proof and number "99" on the right side. It has a blued long trigger with a checkered face, checkered wide hammer spur, checkered thumb safety and slide stop release, and an arched/checkered mainspring housing. The pistol is fitted with an early Colt adjustable target type rear sight and a thick target front sight. It has the standard fully checkered walnut grips. It is complete with one half-tone, blued magazine with "COLT/45 AUTO" on the base. It is complete with its original matching Colt factory shipping box. The matching serial number is penciled in on the underside.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Fine with 70% of the original blue finish remaining overall, scratches and high spot wear overall, and significant wear on the front grip strap as well as the grip safety, mainspring housing and rear edges of the frame. The grips are in good condition with visible checkering overall showing significant wear on both side from actual use. The box is in fair condition with a nice pre-war purple color overall showing light tape repairs on all the corners.
