Signed, Engraved, and Gold Inlaid J. Roberts & Son Double Barrel Shotgun with Case

This is a beautiful example of an engraved and gold inlaid J. Roberts & Son shotgun engraved by Master Engraver Ken Hunt. Hunt, who apprenticed under Harry Kell in the 1950s, was known by some as the "Godfather" of gun engraving. During his career, he engraved 2,666 guns for high quality makers such as Purdey, Holland & Holland and J. Roberts & Son. Hunt was very influential on many other engravers in the early years. Hunt retired in 2011. Blue barrels, break lever, forearm knuckle and trigger guard and casehardened remaining metal surfaces. Single brass bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib with a one inch wedge of fine English scroll engraving on the breech end. The trop of the right barrel near the breech is gold inlaid "J. ROBERTS & SON" and gold inlaid "5, KING ST., LONDON, W.C.2." on the left. 2 3/4 inch chambers, choked improved modified/improved modified with ejectors. The frame, break lever, side plates, trigger guard/lower tang and forearm hardware are engraved with fine English scroll designs. In addition, the left side plate has three gold inlaid quail in a field scene which also has gold inlaid highlights, the right side plate has three gold inlaid ducks in a marsh scene, also with gold inlaid highlights and the underside of the frame has a gold inlaid grouse in a wooded scene. Each side is gold inlaid "J. ROBERTS & SON", and each side plate is signed "K.C. HUNT". The serial number is gold inlaid on the lower tang, and the matching number is marked on the water table and inside of the forearm hardware. The barrel flats are marked with a Nitro proof mark, ".550"", "28" in a diamond, "2 3/4", "3 1/4 TONS". The water table is marked with a "crown/GP" proof mark and "J.R&S". Double triggers, tang mounted manual safety with gold "SAFE", and mounted with a nicely figured multi-point checkered walnut forearm and straight grip stock with teardrop flats, checkered bare butt and "RA" inscribed gold initial oval. Bore diameter is .550/.550, and the wall thickness is .045/.045. Drop at the heel is 1 7/8 inches, drop at the comb is 1 1/2 inches, and the length of pull is 14 3/4 inches. Weight is 5 lbs.. 14 oz. Comes with a hard leather takedown case with leather corner protectors, straps, and handle and wine colored velvet interior with J. Roberts & Son label affixed to the inside of the lid. Class: Modern Long Gun

Excellent overall with 99% original blue finish and 100% case colors remaining. There is a small scuff on the underside of the right barrel and a few small minor scratches on the underside of the barrel rib under the forearm. All of the gold inlay remains. The wood shows a few minor dents and handling marks and very crisp checkering. The engraving is sharp. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good with a few light handling marks on the exterior, some tears/wear form the barrel lugs and some overall minor contact wear on the lining.
