Happy Trails Foundation Silver Screen Legend IV Colt SAA

Lot # 1984 (Sale Order: 985 of 1003)

Documented Happy Trails Foundation Silver Screen Legend IV Inscribed Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Engraved Mexican Style Sterling Silver Grips, Tooled Holster Rig, Carved Case, and Factory Letter

The factory letter confirms this revolver was shipped in the white in the current caliber and barrel length to Jim Lockwood at the Happy Trails Foundation on February 15, 2000. Additional included documentation listing all the parties involved in the revolver, case, and holster rig's subsequent custom work indicates Colt donated the revolver. The Happy Trails Foundation was formed to address child abuse victims and named based on the support of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and their headquarters is on their property. These Silver Screen Legend revolvers are auctioned off by the organization to support their programs, and each is based on a theme relating to Westerns in collaboration with many master craftsmen and women. This revolver was listed as "A Special Tribute to the Golden Era of the Hollywood Western." It has a sterling silver plated finish applied by Jeff Collins and sterling silver grips by Conrad Anderson based on a set owned by Ken Maynard with engraved floral and scroll patterns throughout and a steer head on the right. Anderson also supplied the sterling silver fittings on the holster rig and tuned the action. In addition to the standard markings, "Happy Trails" on the ejector housing and "Silver Screen Legend IV" along the back strap were inscribed and highlighted with black enamel by Master Engraver Rachel Wells. The case lid was carved by Ben Hansen with busts of Eddie Dean, Lash La Rue, Guy Madison, and Clayton Moore along with "Silver Screen Legend IV" and "The Good Guys." The tooled leather holster rig was made by Jim Lockwood Jr. based on classic holsters from "B" Westerns.

Class: Modern Handgun

The whole set is excellent overall other than the fading of most of the gold plating on the steer head and display bullets and light handling and storage marks. The revolver is mechanically excellent.

This revolver is the third of 250 revolvers manufactured by Colt and engraved and plated by the Colt Custom Gun Shop for the Winchester Museum at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. The cases were produced by Arno Werner, Chief Bookbinder for Harvard's Houghton Library until 1982. It has "Buffalo Bill Historical Center/WINCHESTER MUSEUM/1 of 250" on the left side of the barrel along with a man on horseback. The recoil shield has a bison head, and Cody's signature is engraved on the back strap. The rest of the engraving consists primarily of traditional American scrollwork with dot backgrounds. The engraving was done by A.A. White Engravers. The left grip has a rendition of Cody's face and his "TE" cattle brand, and both grips have Custom Shop medallions.
