Cased Factory Engraved Gold and Silver Plated Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver with Magnificent Raised

Lot # 1056 (Sale Order: 57 of 952)

Cased Factory Engraved Gold and Silver Plated Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver with Magnificent Raised Relief Carved U.S. Grant Ivory Grip

Manufactured in 1863. This Fourth Model Navy revolver has a rounded trigger guard, thin loading lever catch and channel in the recoil shield capping cut-out. The revolver is factory engraved with Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The sides of the hammer are engraved with a wolf's head motif. A small "E" is stamped next to the serial number on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap which indicates that the components were designated by Colt for engraving and special finishing. The barrel, loading lever, frame, trigger guard and back strap are silver plated and the cylinder and hammer are gold plated. The revolver is fitted with a one piece ivory grip; the left side of the grip is raised relief carved with the bust of General Grant. The left side of the barrel is inscribed "M-G-HODNETTE" using zig zag engraving. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the legend "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" in an engraved panel with scalloped borders and a flourish on the muzzle end. "COLTS/PATENT" is roll stamped on the left side of the frame in an engraved panel. "36 CAL" is roll stamped on the left front trigger guard bow and "1" is stamped on the left rear bow. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT NO". The full serial number "147681" is stamped on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "7681" is stamped on the loading lever and cylinder. The revolver is complete with an American style mahogany case with four compartments lined with purple velvet. The case contains numerous lead .36 caliber round balls and conical bullets, blue steel double cavity bullet mold stamped "COLTS/PATENT" on the spruce cutter and "36P" on the right block, unmarked flat sided brass capper with chain and a steel cleaning rod with threaded end.

Condition: Very fine overall. The silver plated finish on the barrel, frame and lever is tarnished and remains 85%. The Colt silver plated finish on the trigger guard and back strap is 30% intact. Most of the gold plated finish is present on the cylinder and hammer with some flaking on the edges of the cylinder. The factory engraving is crisp. The inscription on barrel is a later addition. The slightly undersized ivory grip is very fine with sharp details on the relief carved bust. The case is fair. The inside of the case bottom has a break under the pistol butt and a crude period repaired patch in the lining under the cylinder. The lining is dirty, faded and torn in several places. The bullet mold is the only Colt accessory; it retains about 80% of the blue finish but has numerous dents and scratches on the sides. The capper is very good. This is a very fine example of a factory engraved Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver with a spectacular grip!

Scarce Early Production Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver with Fluted Cylinder and Four Screw Frame

Lot # 1057 (Sale Order: 58 of 952)

Scarce Early Production Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver with Fluted Cylinder and Four Screw Frame

Colt Model 1860 Army revolver that was manufactured in 1860. This revolver is one of approximately 4,000 Model 1860 Army revolvers manufactured with the distinctive fluted cylinder. The revolver has a four screw frame and the recoil shields are cut for an attachable shoulder stock. The 7 1/2 inch barrel has the Hartford address. The revolver has a high polish commercial blue barrel and cylinder. The loading lever, frame, and hammer are casehardened. The brass trigger guard and iron back strap are silver plated. The one piece walnut Army size grip is varnished with a high polish piano finish. The top of the barrel is roll stamped "-ADDRESS COLT SAML COLT HARTFORD CT.-". "COLTS/PATENT" is roll stamped on the left side of the frame. "PATENTED SEPT. 10 the 1850" is stamped on one cylinder flute. The serial number, "860" is stamped on the wedge, the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap, in one cylinder flute and on the bottom of the cylinder arbor pin. All of the visible serial numbers match. Many early production Colt Model 1860 revolvers with fluted cylinders were sold to southern dealers before the outbreak of hostilities in April 1861 and were used by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.

Condition: Very fine overall. The barrel and cylinder retain 40% of the original blue finish in protected areas. The balance has aged to a dark blue-brown patina. The right side of the barrel lug has numerous shallow disassembly marks surrounding the wedge slot with scattered light scratches and dents on the remainder of the barrel and right side of the lug. The side of the cylinder has numerous shallow dents and the rear face of the cylinder between the percussion nipples has been crudely milled back. The loading lever, hammer and frame retain 60% of the muted case colors. The brass trigger guard and steel back strap retain about 75% of the nickel plated finish; the nickel plating is heavily tarnished with some flaking at the junction with the top of the frame. The grip is also fine overall; most of the high gloss varnish finish remains intact and there are a number of shallow dents and handling marks on both sides of the grip. The pistol was apparently used as a hammer and has numerous minor dents on the butt. There are two prominent notches carved in the left side of the grip near the junction with the frame. The wedge screw and lower trigger guard screws are replacements. This is a very fine example of a scarce fluted cylinder Model 1860 Army revolver that almost certainly saw service in the Civil War.

Rare Two Digit Serial Number Early Production Colt Model 1 1855 Sidehammer Pocket Revolver with Gust

Lot # 1058 (Sale Order: 59 of 952)

Rare Two Digit Serial Number Early Production Colt Model 1 1855 Sidehammer Pocket Revolver with Gustave Young Hand Engraved Cylinder, Hammer and Barrel Address

This rare revolver is one of only 175 Model 1 Colt sidehammer revolvers manufactured in 1855. The revolver has an octagon barrel and octagon loading lever, cylinder pin latch that inserts from the left side of the barrel lug and 1/2 inch wide recoil shield capping cut out. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the two line address " X COLTS/PATENT X ADDRESS SAML COLT/HARTFORD CT.U.S.A. X ". This address is found only on early 1855 sidehammer revolvers with octagon barrels. The five shot cylinder is hand engraved with the Cabin and Indian scene. The hammer spur has bordered knurling and there are there are seven tiny dots stamped on the hammer below the spur (writer believes that these denote Gustave Young's work charge performed on the cylinder, hammer and barrel address). The assembly number "11" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder and on the side of the cylinder pin. The serial number, "76" is stamped on the underside of the barrel, the side of the cylinder and on the butt. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel and frame. The loading lever, cylinder pin and hammer are casehardened and the cylinder is bright. The one piece rosewood grip has a varnished piano finish. Model 1 Revolvers are among the rarest Colt percussion revolvers and seldom appear at auction. Fewer Model 1 Revolvers were made than any Colt Paterson revolver.

Condition: Fine. The revolver is all original and retains 50% of the original blue finish. There is some heavy pitting on the barrel at the muzzle and light flash pitting on the percussion nipples and rear of the cylinder. Both sides of the barrel lug and the top strap have scattered dents and scratches. The blue finish on the back strap is thin. The hammer, loading lever and cylinder pin retain about 80% of the casehardened finish. The cylinder retains nearly all of the Cabin and Indian scene and has an even gray patina. The barrel markings and serial numbers are clear. The grip is also fine with most of the piano finish intact. This is a fine example of a seldom encountered and highly desirable Colt Model 1, 1855 Revolver. This variation is absent from most Colt Percussion Collections!

Documented Cased British Proofed Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver with Rare Matching Canteen Shoulder S

Lot # 1059 (Sale Order: 60 of 952)

Documented Cased British Proofed Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver with Rare Matching Canteen Shoulder Stock Photographed in The Book of Colt Firearms

This is a very fine example of a Colt Model 1860 Army revolver manufactured in 1866, with the rare variation of steel back strap and trigger guard/front strap, 8 inch barrel and matching serialized canteen shoulder stock. A very limited number of 8 inch civilian models were cut for a shoulder stock as this revolver is. This particular revolver, case and accessories are pictured, identified by serial number and briefly described on page 165 of "The Book of Colt Firearms" by R.L. Wilson. The top barrel flat is marked "--ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA--", the left side of the barrel lug has a "Crown/ V" and "Crown/GP" proof and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT". The left trigger guard shoulder is marked "44 CAL". The cylinder is engraved with the Texas naval battle scene and marked "COLTS PATENT No 6656" and marked with a "crown/V" and "crown/GP" proof mark alternating between each nipple recess. The matching serial number "156656" is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap, the partial serial number "6656" is marked on the cylinder and the wedge is secured too tightly to check. Fitted with a smooth one piece walnut grip. Complete in an English oak case with brass fitting and inset brass disc on the lid and paper "Directions For Using Colt Pistols" label affixed to the inside of the lid. The case is divided into eight compartments with green felt lining and comes with a rare canteen stock with matching serial number marked on the lower tang of the attaching brass and on the tang of the buttplate, all fittings are silver plated brass. There is an iron lanyard ring and swivel mounted on the lower tang. These canteen stocks were manufactured in limited numbers in the 1850s and the canteen stock concept was intended to ease a soldier's burden by replacing two pieces of gear with a single piece which could perform both tasks, and like the later coffee mill Sharps or the trowel bayonet, the idea did not catch on. In addition, the case contains a metal cleaning rod with a metal handle, "L" shaped nipple wrench/screwdriver, an iron bullet mold marked "COLT'S/PATENT" on the sprue cutter, a "J BARLOW/PATENT" marked brown lacquer finished bag shaped flask, a nickel oiler and a large empty W. & C. Eley percussion cap tin. This revolver was formally in the Robert Sutherland collection.

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 70% original bright blue finish with loss due to flaking and showing a smooth gray and brown patina on the exposed areas. The cylinder retains 50% original blue finish concentrated on the rear and showing a smooth brown patina on the forward portion mixed with scattered original blue finish. The scene is fully visible and clear. The grip frame retains 80% original blue finish with scattered flaking and an area of smooth gray patina on the front of the trigger guard bow. Most of the original bright case colors remain on the frame and loading lever. The grip is excellent with 85% original varnish remaining showing wear on the top sides from installing the shoulder stock and a few minor dents and dings. The shoulder stock is excellent with 97% plus original varnish remaining and showing a few scattered minor dings and scratches. 75% of the original silver plating remains which has darkened with age. The exposed brass has a very pleasant aged patina. The case is good with a couple of minor gouges, numerous minor scratches and some normal wear for a case of this age. The flask is excellent with almost all of the original brown lacquer finish remaining showing some high point wear. The cap tin has an aged patina and the lid label is mostly intact. The oiler is fine. An extremely rare documented variation of a Colt Model 1860 Army revolver with matching rare canteen shoulder stock, case and accessories.

Factory Engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver

Manufactured in 1855. The revolver has a five-inch barrel with loading lever, five-shot cylinder, and oval trigger guard. The cylinder is roll-stamped with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLT'S PATENT" markings. The bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and backstrap are stamped with a punch dot above or below the serial number. The sides of the barrel lug, upper edges of the barrel, sides of the loading lever, frame, hammer, trigger guard and backstrap are decorated with Germanic scroll engraving on a punch dot background. The sides of the hammer are engraved with a wolf's head motif. The engraving was either executed by Master Engraver Gustave Young or his staff. All of the visible screws are engraved. The full serial number "104010" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, backstrap and on the side of the cylinder. The partial serial number, "4010" is stamped on the loading lever. The barrel and cylinder are blue, the loading lever, frame and hammer are casehardened and the brass trigger guard and backstrap are silver plated. The one-piece grip is highly figured walnut with a high polish piano finish. Colt revolvers with factory engraving by Gustave Young are some of the most desirable American collector firearms.

Condition: Fine. The revolver retains 30% of the original blue finish on the top and sides of the barrel. The trigger guard and backstrap have 75% of the silver plated finish intact. The loading lever, frame, hammer and cylinder have a silver gray patina. The flawlessly executed scroll engraving is crisp and deep. The markings on the barrel and frame are sharp. The cylinder retains most of the Stagecoach Holdup scene and shows firing wear with battered safety pins and moderate flash pitting on the percussion nipples and rear cylinder face. The grip is fine with scattered handling marks, 70% of the piano finish remains intact. This is both an attractive and fine example of a Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver factory engraved by Gustave Young or his shop.

Historic Leather Bound and Silver Furnished Photo Album from the Household of Historic Master Engrav

Lot # 1061 (Sale Order: 62 of 952)

Historic Leather Bound and Silver Furnished Photo Album from the Household of Historic Master Engraver Gustave Young as Documented by Noted Arms Historian R.L. Wilson From His Personal Collection

Included with this unique item is a letter from R.L. Wilson, author of numerous books on the history of American arms, in which he details the events that led to discovery of this album. While performing research in 1967, Wilson was provided access to the home of Robert Young, grandson of Gustave Young, whose attic was found to contain a virtual archive of one of the top names in American engraving, a "treasure trove" of documents and memorabilia, including this album, which then entered Wilson's personal collection. Marked "ALBUM" in gilt text on the spine, this photo album is laid out in the classic book format, with a brown leather cover, metal protectors on the front corners, a metal clasp, and a silver shield on the front cover bearing the monogram "MY" in a style that Wilson compares to a deluxe Colt or Smith & Wesson casing with a dot and line border in the style of the master engraver himself, implying that Gustave Young personally appointed this album. The front pages identify the maker as William T. Amies of Philadelphia, with the presentation page reading to "Mrs M. Young" from "Mrs. Thomas Gay". Thomas Gay and his wife have not been identified, but "M. Young" is identified by Wilson as Marie Young, wife of Gustave Young. Within the album are a card for C.S Gerlach, a photographer from Elgin Ill, an advertisement for Chauncey L. Moore & Co. of Springfield Mass, and 63 pictures of men, women and children. Also included with the letter is a document titled "List of Contents of the/Photo Album of Gustave and Marie Young/Dating from the 1850s/1860s to the 1890s"; though the Wilson header and credentials is absent, the hand signature on the front page, combined with the center-aligned, bolded headline in the style that graces Wilson's letters, indicate this as his personal inventory of the contents, including pictures identified as Marie & Gustave Young, their sons Alfred, Oscar and Eugene from different stages in their lives.

Condition: Very good. The exterior of the album shows mild scuffs, a few tears at the folds, and a small amount of play in the hardware. Minor tears are present in the pages and some fading of the contents appropriate to age. 95% of the original silver finish is present on the cover plaque, with a fine aged color overall and sharp engraving. A one of a kind item, documented to one of the most important names in American engraving by one of the top names in American arms writing (see website for more photos).

Desirable Colt Belt Model Paterson Revolver No. 2 with Extra Cylinder

Lot # 1062 (Sale Order: 63 of 952)

Desirable Colt Belt Model Paterson Revolver No. 2 with Extra Cylinder

This is a highly desirable and sought after example of a Colt Belt Model Paterson Revolver No. 2 with an extra cylinder. Colt manufactured approximately 850 Belt Model No. 2 revolvers at the Paterson, New Jersey factory between 1837 and 1840. Experts believe that fewer than 250 of these revolvers still exist today. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, frame, grip straps and hammer. The straight grips are highly figured walnut with a high polish piano finish. The five-shot square back cylinder is roll engraved with the Centaur hunting scene. In addition to the square back cylinder this No. 2, Model revolver has the distinctive flared barrel lug, double curve barrel lug, flat butt and is in the correct 100-200 serial number range. The top of the barrel is marked "-Patent Arms Mg Co Paterson N.J. Colt's Pt.-" flanked by small arrows. The serial number, "185", is visible on the rear of the barrel lug, the wedge, the rear face of both cylinders, on the left side of the trigger, on the cylinder plate in the trigger slot and on the bottom right edge of the grip. The revolver comes with an extra cylinder roll engraved with the Centaur scene and numbered to the gun.

Condition: Very fine as period refurbished. The pistol retains nearly 90% of the high polish blue finish showing some scattered edge wear and a smooth gray patina on the back strap. The grips remain very good with some small gouges on the lower portion. The hammer appears to be an expertly executed replacement. The barrel markings are sharp and the cylinder scene is at least 90% complete. The action is crisp and functions well. The Colt Paterson revolvers are historically important and rare in any condition. No advanced Colt collection is complete without an example of a Colt Paterson Model revolver.

Rare One of Three Known Factory Engraved Documented Colt Model 1871-72 Open Top Revolver

Lot # 1067 (Sale Order: 68 of 952)

Rare One of Three Known Factory Engraved Documented Colt Model 1871-72 Open Top Revolver

The accompanying Colt factory letter (photocopy) states that this revolver was one of eight revolvers shipped to J.P. Moores & Sons on July 4, 1876. These eight revolvers are the only Model 1871-72 Open Top revolvers that were factory engraved. The letter lists the finish as "nickel" with the grips as "Not Listed" and verifies the factory engraving. The barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap are decorated with factory scroll engraving on a punch-dot background. The barrel legend and Colt "1871" and "1872" patent dates are enclosed in engraved panels. The engraving on the bottom of the barrel lug and trigger guard covers the serial numbers. Colt Model 1871-72 Open Top revolver serial number 1970 was in the same lot of eight revolvers shipped to J.P. Moores on July 4, 1876, and is illustrated on page 158 of "The Book of Colt Engraving" by R.L. Wilson. Wilson describes the engraving on serial number 1970 as, "a flowery scroll design which may have been done by one of the younger craftsmen. But, nevertheless, one of the rarest deigns in the study of Colt firearms engraving". The engraving on this revolver is nearly identical to that on serial number 1970 and appears to have been executed by the same craftsman. The top of the barrel is marked with the one-line address "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" and "-PAT. JULY.25. 1871.-/-PAT. JULY 2.1872-" is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT NO.003". The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "1209". The full serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "003". All nickel finish and fitted with a smooth one-piece ivory grip. Research by Colt experts indicates that the eight factory engraved, nickel-plated Colt Model 1871-1872 Open Top revolvers shipped to J.P. Moores on July 4, 1876, were intended for display at the Independence Day celebration and Centennial display in New York City. The revolvers were serial numbers: 1932, 1970, 1982, 1983, 1992, 1993, 2003 and 2004. This revolver, serial number 1970 and 1992 are the only known Colt factory engraved Model 1871-72 revolvers extant. Serial number 1992 is also offered in this auction. Colt manufactured only about 7,000 Model 1871-72 Open Top revolvers and surviving examples are scarce.

Condition: Very fine as restored. The revolver has been carefully polished and the barrel lengthened. Half of the original nickel-plated finish remains on the balance. Most of the finish loss is concentrated on the sides of the trigger guard and cylinder. There is scattered shallow flash pitting on the sides of the barrel lug, top of the barrel, ejector housing and forward edge of the cylinder. There is scattered light pitting on the back strap and hammer. The bottom of the back strap is drilled and tapped for a lanyard ring which has been removed. The cylinder retains 85% of the Texas Navy scene. The grip is fine. The ivory has a very attractive patina, shows minimal shrinkage and has a few minor age cracks on the bottom. The markings and engraving are clear and crisp. This rare and extremely desirable Colt revolver is a prize that would occupy a place of honor in the finest Colt collection.

The revolver is fitted with a varnished one-piece walnut grip. Complete in a walnut case with a brass shield inset in the lid and red velvet lining. The case has five compartments and contains a crossed revolvers/stars/eagle/cannon brass powder flask and two cavity iron bullet mold with "COLTS/PATENT" marked on the sprue cutter and "N.J" on the bottom of the left block.

Condition: Near fine. The metal surfaces have an attractive smooth mottled gray and brown patina. The brass has a very pleasant aged patina with strong traces of the original silver plating in the protected areas. The grip is very fine with 95% original varnish remaining, and showing some lower edge wear and some minor dings and dents. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. 90% of the cylinder scene is visible and clear. The action is excellent. The relined case and accessories are all very good. This is a solid original example of a highly desirable Factory Engraved Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver!
