Lot # 1150 (Sale Order: 151 of 952)

Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Rifle Chambered in Scarce 38 WCF with Set Trigger

This is an early model 1885 rifle manufactured in 1892. The top flat of the number "2" barrel is marked with the two line Winchester factory address ahead of the rear sight and "38 W.C.F." stamped at the breech in front of the receiver. The barrel is fitted with a reproduction Winchester target/globe front sight with a reproduction mid-range rear sight, with a blank plate in the rear sight dovetail. As noted it does have a single set trigger. The lower tang has been stamped with the Winchester factory patent dates and serial number. The rifle is fitted with the original straight grip walnut stock with a crescent steel buttplate and standard Winchester forearm with a ebony tip inlay.

Condition: Very good as partially refinished with 90% of the original blued finish on the barrel with a the complete action, lever, hammer and breech block having been non-professionally recase colored which has now faded to give it a nice aged appearance. The stock and forend are both fine with much of the original factory finish with minor handling marks and light nicks on the underside of the stock. There is an old professionally plugged sling swivel hole on the underside of the buttstock. With a proper restoration of the receiver case colors this would be an excellent looking rifle in a very scarce caliber.

Extremely Rare Marlin Model 1893 Saddle Ring Trapper Carbine with 16 Inch Barrel

Lot # 1159 (Sale Order: 160 of 952)

Extremely Rare Marlin Model 1893 Saddle Ring Trapper Carbine with 16 Inch Barrel<BR><BR>This is a very rare example of a Marlin Model 1893 Carbine with special 16 inch barrel. The standard barrel lengths on these carbines was 15 and 20 inches. "Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms" states that Marlin manufactured sixty-one Model 1893 Carbines with 15 inch barrels and one Model 1893 Carbine with a 15 1/2 inch barrel. Neither Flayderman's or the "Marlin Firearms" by Brophy list a 16 inch barrel, however it is no doubt an extremely low number, or possibly one-of-a-kind. The top of the barrel is marked "-Marlin Firearms Co., NEW-HAVEN, CT. U.S.A.-/-PAT'D OCT.11. 1887.APRIL. 2. 1889. AUG. 1. 1893.-" ahead of the rear sight, "SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL" flanked by a diamond on the left side and right side, (adopted in 1904), and "30-30" on top at the breech. The top of the receiver is marked "MARLIN SAFETY" with foliate, the upper tang "MODEL/<1893>" and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. The upper tang is drilled and tapped for sight mounting. Brass blade front sight and folding ladder carbine rear sight graduated to 20, and a saddle ring and staple on the left rear of the receiver. Blue barrel, magazine, barrel bands and loading gate, with casehardened remaining parts. Mounted with a smooth varnished walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate.<BR><BR>Condition: Fine. The carbine retains 80% of the faded blue and 40% casehardened finish. The barrel and magazine have nearly all of the blue finish remaining. The barrel bands show handling wear and retain about 60% of the blue finish. The blue finish on the loading gate is faded with 90% remaining. The top and sides of the receiver, and the sides of the lever retain 90% plus case colors. Contact points on the bottom of the receiver and the lever have faded to a silver-gray patina. The buttplate has a smooth gray-brown patina. The revarnished stock and forearm are very good overall with some minor dents and scratches. The markings are crisp. This is a very fine example on a very rare, perhaps unique Marlin Model 1893 Carbine with special 16 inch barrel.<BR>

Rare Marlin Model 1893 Lever Action Musket with Factory Letter

Lot # 1160 (Sale Order: 161 of 952)

Rare Marlin Model 1893 Lever Action Musket with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1895, this Model 1893 Musket is 1 of only 31 Model 1893s manufactured in the Musket configuration from 1895 to as late as 1915, however records show that only one was manufactured after 1906 (listed as year unknown) according to "Marlin Firearms" by Brophy. Also in Brophy's book on page 588 are the serial numbers, calibers and date of shipment of all 31 including this musket. There is also a breakdown of calibers and number made per year. This musket was manufactured in the first year and in that same year the greatest number 20 of the 31 were made and 22 were manufactured in the 32-40 caliber. All 20 of the muskets manufactured in 1895 were shipped from the company on the same day, December 14, 1895 and were chambered in the 32-40 caliber. (More than likely they were all shipped to the same location). The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two line address/patent dates and "32-40" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "MODEL/1893" and the serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. Fixed blade front sight and folding ladder carbine rear sight graduated to 900 yards. There is a sling swivel mounted on the underside of the receiver ahead of the lever and one on the front barrel band. Mounted with a full length smooth walnut forearm and a straight grip stock with a steel carbine buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the model, Musket configuration, 32/40 caliber, 30 inch barrel and that it was shipped on December 14, 1895.

Condition: Very good. The musket retains 20% original blue finish concentrated mainly in protected areas mixed with a smooth mottled brown patina. The buttplate is heavily pitted. The wood is good overall with a couple of minor age cracks on the wrist and overall scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are readable. The action is fine. An extremely rare find and a must have for any Marlin lever action enthusiast.

Bullard Large Frame Lever Action Rifle with Three Digit Serial Number

Lot # 1162 (Sale Order: 163 of 952)

Bullard Large Frame Lever Action Rifle with Three Digit Serial Number

Bullard rifles are desirable on the collector market today as they were manufactured only from 1886 to 1890. They competed for sales directly against the Winchester, Marlin and Whitney Arms Company lever action rifles also manufactured during this time. This fierce competition really stymied their sales creating a very limited production of Bullard rifles (approximately 10,000 to 12,000). This rifle employs a very long receiver/action that houses a brass cartridge lifting mechanism (very similar to the Winchester 1876 rifles) to accommodate the larger and longer cartridges. It has a straight cylindrical bolt (similar to the 1873 and 1876 Winchester rifles). This bolt has a unique two-tooth gear mechanism at the rear that engages a similar two-tooth geared mechanism on the front of the breechblock. This geared mechanism functions off the loading lever and basically acts as the locking lug for the rifle bolt which gave it far more strength to withstand higher pressure of the larger cartridges. The left side of the receiver has a small side plate that allows access to the mechanism inside and the loading gate for the tubular magazine located on the underside of the receiver. This particular rifle has a round barrel marked with a small number "32" at the breech. The top of the receiver at the breech is marked "Cal/40". The upper left side of the receiver is marked with the two line address and 1881 patent date. The serial number is marked on the upper tang directly behind the hammer. Blade front and adjustable sporting rear sights. Blue finish with casehardened hammer, breechblock and lever. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with an iron forend cap and crescent buttplate. With the rifle are a pull through cleaning rod, full length 40-75 sizing die, brass powder measure, deprimer and 2 bullet seaters.

Condition: Fine. The rifle retains 40% original blue finish mixed with smooth brown patina. The hammer and lever retain most of the faded original case colors with a smooth gray on the balance. The wood is good with some shallow gouges, minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine. The cleaning brush shows heavy wear, otherwise the tools are very good.

This geared mechanism is operated by the loading lever and basically acts as the locking lug for the rifle bolt which gave it far more strength to withstand higher pressure of the larger cartridges. The left side of the receiver has a small side plate that allows access to the mechanism inside and the loading gate for the tubular magazine is located on the under side of the receiver. The rifle features a full magazine and is equipped with a Lyman ivory bead front sight, rifle style ladder rear sight and the upper tang has been drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The left side of the receiver is marked "BULLARD REPEATING ARMS COMPANY/SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT. AUG. 16. 1881." marking and the right side is marked "Model 1886". The top front of the receiver is marked "Cal/45." The serial number is on the rear of the frame just behind the hammer slot and also found inside top and bottom tangs at the tips and on the face of the buttstock inside the action. Straight grain smooth American walnut straight pistol grip stock featuring an iron end cap and checkered hard rubber Bullard buttplate.

Condition: Excellent. The barrel and magazine tube retain 98% strong original bright blue and the receiver retains 80% original blue with losses flaked, not worn, to a medium patina. The lever retains 70% strong vivid original case colors with the hammer retaining 80% brilliant colors. Stock has a small hairline crack in left side of wrist and a couple more by the buttplate, otherwise wood is sound and retains a smooth hand rubbed patina. Markings are all clear. Mechanically excellent.

Rare Exceptional Colt Model 1855 Revolving Carbine

Lot # 1169 (Sale Order: 170 of 952)

Rare Exceptional Colt Model 1855 Revolving Carbine

This is an outstanding example of a Colt Model 1855 revolving carbine. Also known as the Model 1855, which quickly became known as the "Root" after Colt Superintendent at the time Elisha K. Root, the Model 1855 marked Colt's return to the manufacture of shoulder arms and can be attributed to the introduction of a New Model pocket pistol. This is one of approximately 2,000 carbines sold through Colt's London Agency. This rare carbine is marked with British "crown/GP" and "crown/V" proofs on the left rear barrel flat below the rear sight and alternating in each cylinder flute. The top strap is marked "COL. COLT HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.", one of the cylinder flutes is stamped "PATENTED SEPT. 10, 1850" and the left side of the receiver is marked "COLT'S PATENT/NOV. 24th 1857" directly above and ahead of the saddle ring and stud. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel, frame, lower tang and the buttplate toe. The upper left rear of the trigger guard is marked with the letter "P". Pinched brass front sight with folding three leaf rear sight, (one fixed, two folding), marked for 100, 300, and 600 yards. The barrel, cylinder and frame are blue, loading lever and hammer casehardened, brass trigger guard and buttplate, and the carbine is mounted with a smooth oiled black walnut straight grip stock with crescent buttplate.

Condition: Excellent. The barrel retains 85% original blue finish with scattered areas of smooth plum patina. The frame retains 98% original blue finish with some scattered minor spotting and a small patch of minor pitting on the top strap. The cylinder retains 95% original blue finish with loss due to flaking, and showing a smooth brown patina on the exposed areas, and some minor spotting. The loading lever and hammer retain almost all of the original bright, vivid case colors. The trigger guard and buttplate have taken on a very pleasant mellow aged patina. The stock is excellent with some scattered minor dents and dings. The markings remain sharp. The action is excellent. A rare carbine that would be extremely hard to improve on and would be the center piece of any Colt or carbine collection.

Desirable Rare Documented Factory Engraved Blackpowder Colt Single Action Army Frontier Six Shooter

Lot # 1170 (Sale Order: 171 of 952)

Desirable Rare Documented Factory Engraved Blackpowder Colt Single Action Army Frontier Six Shooter Revolver with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1880. The left side of the barrel has an oval panel acid-etched "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". The revolver has a nickel plated finish with niter blue frame screws and a one-piece ivory grip. The revolver is factory engraved with Germanic style scrollwork on a punch dot background. The engraving coverage is approximately the equivalent of the later Colt "B" engraving. The engraving was probably executed by Master Engraver Cuno A. Helfricht or his shop. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "COLT"S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in one line. The barrel legend is surrounded by a panel composed of wavy lines and punch dots. The caliber "44" is stamped on the underside of the barrel. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt three date, three line patent marking in an engraved panel with double line borders. "44CF" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard bow. The assembly number "1010" is located on the inside of the loading gate. The full serial number "53117" is stamped on the bottom of the fame, trigger guard, and back strap. The partial serial number "3117" is stamped on the side of the cylinder. A partial serial number "3088" is stamped on the underside of the barrel beneath the ejector shroud. The revolver is documented by a Colt factory letter and was featured in a issue of Gun Report. Both the Colt letter and the Gun Report article accompany the revolver.

Condition: Extremely fine. The revolver retains 80% of the original nickel plated finish. At least 95% of the delicate acid-etched "FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER" marking remains. There is finish wear and light pitting on the forward edges of the frame and top strap. The cylinder has 75% of the nickel plated finish with pitting on the face and in the cylinder flutes. Some of the plated finish has flaked from the sides of the hammer. The serial numbers and the markings on the barrel and frame are sharp. The impeccably executed scrollwork and punch dot engraving is crisp. The ivory grip has yellowed with age but remains very fine, showing a shallow chip and several very minor age stress lines on the right side of the grip and on the butt. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. This is a much sought after example of a scarce factory engraved blackpowder Colt Single Action "Frontier Six Shooter" revolver.

Fine Nickel Plated Black Powder Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Ivory Grip

Lot # 1172 (Sale Order: 173 of 952)

Fine Nickel Plated Black Powder Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Ivory Grip

This Colt Single Action Army Revolver was manufactured by Colt c. 1877 utilizing a condemned barrel and cylinder from government contract Colt Cavalry Model revolvers. The revolver has most of the characteristics of "Condemned Model" Single Action revolvers set forth by Kopec and Fenn on pages 157-158 of "COLT CAVALRY AND ARTILLERY REVOLVERS". The revolver has a nickel plated finish with casehardened hammer and ivory grip. The condemned U.S. contract barrel and cylinder were rejected by government inspectors and subsequently salvaged by Colt and utilized on this commercial production revolver. The barrel has the early script address and hole for the early style ejector housing with round boss. The barrel is fitted with a Second Style ejector housing with bullseye ejector rod head. The underside of the barrel is stamped with the partial original serial number, "6638" under the ejector housing immediately ahead of the frame followed by the partial serial number "8324". A "C" condemnation mark is stamped on the underside of the barrel. The military cylinder is stamped with the "D.F.C." Ordnance Sub-inspection marks, a "P' proofmark and the partial serial number "6191", the military proof, inspection mark and partial serial indicate that it is a condemned component from a government contract Cavalry Model revolver. The left side of the frame is roll stamped with the Colt three line, three patent dates. "45 CAL" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard. The assembly number, "1861" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. A Colt "P" sub-inspection mark is stamped in the hammer well. The full serial number "38324" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. Colt Single Action Army revolvers that utilize "Condemned" government contract parts are a rare and desirable variation of the Single Action Army revolver.

Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains more than 80% of the retailer nickel plated finish. There is some finish loss and light pitting on the end of the barrel surrounding the front sight and along the top of the frame near the sight groove. The front edges of the cylinder and the edges of the cylinder flutes have some finish loss and scattered flash pitting. There is light edge wear on most of the other components. The ivory grip is very good with some age discoloration along the edges and the usual hairline age cracks on the butt. The barrel and frame markings and serial numbers are sharp. The hammer will not hold at half or full cock but function otherwise. This is an attractive example of a rarely encountered "Condemned" Single Action Army revolver.

Colt Rinaldo A. Carr Sub-Inspected Single Action Cavalry Model Revolver with Factory and Kopec Lette

Lot # 1173 (Sale Order: 174 of 952)

Colt Rinaldo A. Carr Sub-Inspected Single Action Cavalry Model Revolver with Factory and Kopec Letters

This is an example of a Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector Rinaldo A. Carr (R.A.C.) and Ordnance Inspector Capt. Stanhope E. Blunt (S.E.B.) in 1890 and was subsequently refurbished by Colt. The revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter and a letter of authentication by Colt Single Action expert John A. Kopec. The Colt letter states this revolver was shipped from Colt's to the Springfield Armory on April 30, 1890 as part of a lot of 300 revolvers. The Kopec letter states that this revolver falls within the serial number range of four revolvers documented as issued to Troop D, 8th Cavalry Regiment on May 19, 1890. The Kopec letter also notes that the revolver was refurbished by Colt as evidenced by a small ampersand (&) stamped on the right rear trigger guard bow and additional numbers stamped on the loading gate hinge. The letter further states that the barrel, cylinder and grips are serial numbered "0564" and originally were fitted to revolver serial number 120564 inspected by Capt. John G. Butler (J.G.B.). The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Colt style IV elongated block letter address. The underside of the barrel is stamped with the partial serial number, "0564", the sub-inspector initials "D.F.C." and a "P" proofmark. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt three line, three patent dates and the "U.S." property mark. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "457". The frame, trigger guard and back strap are stamped with the serial number "131767" and "R.A.C." is stamped above the serial number on the frame. The side of the cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "0564", a "P" proofmark and the sub-inspector initials "D.F.C.". The lower left side of the grip is stamped with the date "1887" above the script initials "JGB" in a rectangle. A faint "D.F.C." sub-inspection mark is stamped on the lower right side of the grip. The revolver has the bullseye ejector rod head used on Cavalry Model revolvers thru serial number 113,000 and has elongated bordered knurling on the hammer spur.

Condition: Fine as factory refinished. The barrel, trigger guard, cylinder, back strap and ejector rod housing retain 90% of the blue finish. Wear is limited to some minor finish loss on the leading edges of the cylinder and ejector housing. The frame, loading gate and hammer retain 95% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The serial numbers, ordnance inspection marks and Colt markings are clear. The walnut grip is good with numerous light handling and storage marks. The ordnance inspection marks are light but legible. None of the oil finish is present on the grip. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. This is a very good looking example of a factory refinished late production Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver.

Extremely Fine U.S. Colt Artillery Model Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 1174 (Sale Order: 175 of 952)

Extremely Fine U.S. Colt Artillery Model Single Action Army Revolver

From 1895 to 1903 a number of "US" marked Single Action Army revolvers, like this one, were returned to either the Colt factory or (this example) Springfield Armory where they were modified (to 5 1/2 inch barrel length), dismantled and refinished, often with little regard to which gun the refinished parts came from, resulting in a mix of serial numbers and markings. This revolver has a 5 1/2 inch barrel, casehardened frame and hammer and blue remaining parts. The serial numbers are mixed on these altered models and they were remarked by inspectors of the era. This revolver is serial numbered "2419" on the frame, "115863" over a "G" on the trigger guard, "95/690/G" on the back strap and the cylinder is un-numbered. It bears the standard one line address on top of the barrel and the two line, two patent date marking on the left side of the frame followed by "U.S.". The loading gate has the assembly number "819". It has the standard blade front and frame notch rear sights and is fitted with the correct smooth one-piece walnut grip with "1884" over "FH" (Frank Heath) in an oval cartouche on the left side and a lightly visible "DFC" cartouche on the right.

Condition: Very fine as arsenal refurbished. The revolver retains 70% of the correct arsenal/factory refurbished blue finish with the balance a smooth brown and gray patina. The frame retains 95% arsenal refurbished case colors with areas faded to a smooth gray patina. The grip is also very fine with a few small minor dents and scratches. The barrel address is light and the remaining markings are clear. The action is excellent.
