Excellent Documented Colt London Agency Model 1878 Double Action Revolver in 476 Caliber Photographe

Lot # 1185 (Sale Order: 186 of 952)

Excellent Documented Colt London Agency Model 1878 Double Action Revolver in 476 Caliber Photographed in "Colt's Double Action Revolver Model of 1878" by Wilkinson

Also known as the Enfield Mark III Ball cartridge, the 476 was introduced in 1881 due to concerns regarding the Mark II .455 caliber round properly engaging the rifling of the Enfield revolver. Though phased out of British service in 1887, the Woolwich Arsenal continued Mark III cartridge production into the 1890s, and Dum in India produced the cartridge clear into World War One. This particular revolver was manufactured in 1887. The top of the barrel is marked with the one Hartford/Pall Mall address "476 CAL" on the upper left front of the trigger guard. London Proofhouse "Crown/V" and "Crown/GP" markings are present on the underside of the barrel and alternating on the cylinder behind each flute. The partial matching serial number "713" is marked on the rear face of the cylinder and the loading gate is marked with the assembly number "446". All blue finish with niter blue hammer and trigger, and fitted with checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt in an oval at the top and a lanyard ring on the butt. This revolver can be seen in a full page spread on page 362 of Don Wilkerson's "Colt's Double Action Revolver Model of 1878", which gives a production number of only 1,682 for this configuration.

Condition: Excellent. The revolver retains 95% plus of the bright original blue finish, showing a smooth brown patina on the ejector housing and in scattered patches, a few minor scratches and handling marks, and some bright edge wear. The niter blue is strong and vivid, with a small amount of spotting visible on the hammer and trigger. The grips are also excellent, with some minor scuffs. The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent.

Manufactured in 1925. The revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter that describes it as caliber 38/40 with 4 3/4 inch barrel, nickel finish, rubber stocks and factory engraved Grade B coverage. The letter further states that this revolver was shipped to Albert Steinfeld and Company in Tucson, Arizona on October 15, 1925. The revolver is decorated with Colt "B" factory scroll engraving on a lined background. The engraving was executed by Wilbur A. Glahn. This revolver is illustrated and described on page 299 of THE BOOK OF COLT ENGRAVING by R.L. Wilson. The original hard rubber grips listed in the factory letter and shown in the above referenced illustration have been replaced with period Colt relief carved pearl steerhead grips. The right grip features a relief carved steer head. The hammer spur has borderless knurling. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the two line legend "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co./HARTFORD CT. Only about 1,000 Colt Single Action Army revolvers were factory engraved in 67 years of production. Factory engraved Single Action Army revolvers like this outstanding example are rare and very desirable.

There is some minor flaking on the edges of the barrel at the muzzle, on the front and rear edges of the cylinder and on the edges of the hammer. The cylinder shows some light abrasion marks. The well-executed engraving is deep and sharp. The markings and serial numbers are crisp. The grips are very good and fit well with only very minor shrinkage. The relief carved steer head has minimal wear. There is a small chip in the heel of the right grip and some very minor nicks on the edge of the right grip. Although the grips are not original to this revolver, they are period Colt grips that enhance the overall look of this outstanding revolver. This is an excellent example of a scarce post-WWI factory engraved Colt Single Action Army revolver documented on The Book of Colt Engraving as engraved by master factory engraver Wilbur Glahn.
