Rare Colt Paterson Model 1839 Shotgun

Lot # 1201 (Sale Order: 202 of 952)

Rare Colt Paterson Model 1839 Shotgun

Model 1839 Revolving Shotgun manufactured at Colt's Paterson, New Jersey, factory c. 1839-1841. The total production of Model 1839 Shotguns was less than 225 guns; the Model 1839 Shotgun is one of the rarest Colt longarms. The shotgun has a round, 16 gauge, 32-inch Damascus finished barrel and flat-sided, brazed lug with beveled corners. The right side of the lug is roll-stamped "-Patent Arms M'g. Co. Paterson, NJ.-Colt's Pt. -" in one line. The barrel has a half-moon profile rear sight and a period replacement, half moon, brass front sight blade. The barrel lug has a two-groove wedge. The 3 1/2-inch, five-shot cylinder has rounded shoulders. The serial number, "54", is stamped on the face of the barrel lug and the cylinder turning ring. The walnut stock has a crescent shaped, carbine style buttplate.

Condition: Good. The carbine is complete and appears to be original with the exception of the wedge and period replacement front sight blade. The barrel has traces of the Damascus finish. The rear portion of the barrel, barrel lug, frame, trigger guard an crescent buttplate all have moderate-heavy pitting with a silver-gray patina. The cylinder has a dark brown patina with light-moderate flash pitting on the percussion nipple and front and rear face. Traces of the detailed, three panel, cylinder scenes are visible. The tang screws are battered. The left side of the stock is period inlaid with a German silver eight-pointed star. Period German silver half-moon and oval inlays on both sides of the stock wrist cover old repairs. There is a crack on the left side of the stock wrist between the recoil shield and the tang. The stock is in fair-good condition with moderate wear. This is a solid example of one of the rarest Colt longarms.

Exceptional Colt Model 1861 Special Rifle-Musket

Lot # 1202 (Sale Order: 203 of 952)

Exceptional Colt Model 1861 Special Rifle-Musket

Model 1861 Special Rifle-Musket manufactured by Colt c.1863. The Model 1861 Special Rifle Musket was a simplified version of the Springfield Model 1861 Rifle-Musket that featured a distinctive hammer, nipple bolster with no clean-out screw, two-leaf folding rear sight, screw-fastened Enfield type barrel bands and a straight shank, tulip head, ramrod. Many of the features introduced on the Model 1861 Special Rifle-Musket were subsequently incorporated on the Springfield Model 1863 Type I and Type II Rifle-Muskets. The barrel, lock plate and furniture are National Armory bright. The lock plate, hammer and barrel bands have a high polish finish while the barrel and other components have less polish. The rear sight is a dull military blue. The straight grain black walnut stock is oil finished. The barrel has a block style front sight that serves as a bayonet lug; the leaves on the rear sight are graduated for 100, 200 and 500 yards. The lock plate has high polish finish and is dated "1863" behind the hammer and roll-stamped "U.S./COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD CT." in three lines ahead of it. The nipple bolster is stamped with a small Federal eagle and shield motif. The top of the barrel is dated "1863" and the left side is stamped with "V/P/Eagle Head" proof and inspection marks parallel to the axis of the bore. The left barrel flat is stamped with a small "WP" Ordnance sub-inspection mark. "U.S." is stamped on the top of the buttplate heel. "U" is stamped on the right sides of the barrel bands facing the muzzle. Small single letter Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. The left stock flat is stamped with the Ordnance sub-inspector's and final inspector's marks. The stamps consist on three script initials in a rectangle with rounded ends and two script initials in a rectangle with rounded ends. Colt manufactured an estimated 75,000 Model 1861 Special Rifle-Muskets for Ordnance Department contracts during the Civil War; many of these muskets apparently were never issued and remain in very-fine to excellent condition.

Condition: Excellent plus, as issued. The musket retains most of the original 'National Armory Bright' finish. There are some small patches of pitting on the top and left side of the hammer, on the sides of the barrel bands and on the heel of the buttplate. The percussion nipple, bolster, hammer and adjacent portions of the lock plate and barrel are free from flash pitting. The rear sight retains more 98% of the military blue finish. The barrel and lock plate markings are sharp. The stock is in excellent condition with a few, scattered and relatively minor storage marks. The Ordnance inspection marks on the left flat are very sharp. This is an exceptional example of an important Civil War rifle-musket.

Lot # 1204 (Sale Order: 205 of 952)

Impressive Cased Presentation Colt Model 1878 Double Action Frontier Six Shooter Revolver with Factory Letter

This is an outstanding example of a Colt Model 1878 Frontier Six Shooter revolver manufactured in 1896. The barrel has standard Colt one line Hartford address on the top and is stamped "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER .44-40" on the left side. "A FRIEND IN NEED/From your Wife. MAY 1908" is engraved on the barrel between the address and the model designation. The first and second lines of the inscription use different styles of engraving. The right rear trigger guard has the factory "six-pointed" rework star present. This was most likely added at the time of the aforementioned 1908 era factory inscription. The underside of the barrel is marked with the caliber designation "44" and the circled Rampant Colt is located on the left rear of the frame just in front of the grips. The full serial number "36/307" is located on the underside of the grip and the partial serial number "307" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. The rear of the loading gate is stamped "203". Nickel finish with niter blue trigger and hammer with polished sides, and a casehardened lanyard loop on the butt. Fitted with checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt in an oval at the top. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber ".44/c" caliber, barrel length, nickel finish, rubber grips and that it was shipped as 1 of 5 to Hartley & Graham in New York, New York on December 16, 1896. The revolver comes in a English style oak case with a varnished finish with an inlaid brass escutcheon on the lid. The interior is lined with red baize and divided into four compartments with a 24-round oak cartridge board containing 24 rounds of 44-40 cartridges and a steel cleaning rod.

Condition: Excellent. The revolver retains 99% of the original factory nickel plated finish with some flaking on the forward portion of the cylinder, the inside edges on the frame adjacent to the cylinder and the edge of the barrel at the muzzle. At least 95% of the fiery niter blue finish is present on the trigger and hammer. The cylinder latch pin appears to be a contemporary replacement. The grips are excellent with minimal fading, light handling wear and crisp checkering. All of the markings are sharp and the engraved inscription is crisp. The action is excellent. The case is excellent. The top and sides have most of the original finish and show only light storage marks. The red baize lining is excellent and shows minimal contact wear and some oil stains. This is an impressive example of a rare inscribed Colt Model 1878 Frontier Six Shooter Revolver.

Colt London Agency Model 1878 Double Action Revolver in 476 Caliber with Factory Letter and Actor As

Lot # 1221 (Sale Order: 222 of 952)

Colt London Agency Model 1878 Double Action Revolver in 476 Caliber with Factory Letter and Actor Association

Also known as the Enfield Mark III Ball cartridge, the 476 was introduced in 1881 due to concerns regarding the Mark II .455 caliber round properly engaging the rifling of the Enfield revolver. Though phased out of British service in 1887, the Woolwich Arsenal continued Mark III cartridge production into the 1890s, and Dum in India produced the cartridge clear into World War One. Colt manufactured an estimated 2,458 Model 1878s in 476 caliber. The included factory letter verifies the caliber, barrel length and hard rubber grips with the finish blue at time of original shipment. The revolver was shipped to Colt's London Agency, London, England, on February 8, 1886 as part of a 100 gun shipment. The top of the barrel is marked with the one Hartford/Pall Mall address and "476 CAL" on the upper left front of the trigger guard. London Proofhouse "crown/V" and "crown/GP" markings are present on the underside of the barrel and alternating on the cylinder behind each flute. The loading gate has the assembly number "15" and the cylinder is not numbered. Fitted with checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt in an oval at the top and a lanyard ring on the butt. A letter included with the gun confirms that this revolver was once part of the Gary R. Burghoff Collection (best known for his role as Radar O'Rielly on the hit television series M.A.S.H.)

Condition: Very fine as factory refinished. The revolver retains 95% of the blue finish with the grip straps thinning to a brown. The grips are excellent with a few minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically functions fine, but is slightly loose.
