Scarce U.S. Springfield First Model Allin Conversion Breech Loading Rifle-Musket

Lot # 1326 (Sale Order: 327 of 952)

Scarce U.S. Springfield First Model Allin Conversion Breech Loading Rifle-Musket

Developed by Erskine Allin, Springfield Master Armorer, the Allin Conversion was designed to take advantage of the sizeable quantity of Model 1863s that were stockpiled following the Civil War. The overall design and philosophy of the conversion (remove a section of the breech, mill a chamber into the barrel, install a hinged breechblock) remained consistent through all versions produced of Allin's system, but the First Model has some special features, such as the retention of a 58 caliber bore, a more sweeping profile to the top of the breechblock, and a spring loaded extractor/ejector assembly. Opening the breech extends a cam-driven extractor, while retracting an ejector pin mounted in the bottom of the cutout, and when the breech is fully opened the extractor snaps back and the pin strikes the extracted cartridge, ejecting it from the weapon. Though an elegant and mechanically ingenious solution for rapidly clearing spent cartridges, the ejector/extractor was eliminated from later models in favor of less intricate extraction system. Blade front and proper 2-leaf rear sights with "64" marked ahead of the tang and an eagle head on the upper left flat of the barrel. The lock plate is marked "1865" behind the hammer and "American eagle" and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead with the checkered breech lever resting in the bolster cutout. Smooth straight wrist stock with three "U" and "V" marked barrel bands, tulip-head ramrod, "ESA" (Erskine S. Allin) and "SWP" inspection cartouches on the left side flat, steel trigger guard and smooth "US" buttplate.

Condition: Very good as refurbished. Some light spotting and handling marks on the gently cleaned barrel, bands and trigger guard, with a dark brown patina on the tang and minor pitting near the breech and muzzle. The breechblock assembly shows a mixed brown and gray patina with darker traces of the casehardened pattern on the hammer and lock. The stock is refurbished and repaired with some cracking near the breech assembly and tang, mild chipping at the ramrod channel and buttplate, and scattered pressure dents. Mechanically excellent, including the ejector and extractor. Like all weapons that undergo scrutiny for military acquisition, the First Model Allins were subjected to a battery of tests and trials that can be fairly described as brutal, and survivors are rare in any condition.

Scarce U.S. Springfield Model 1877 Trapdoor Carbine

Lot # 1328 (Sale Order: 329 of 952)

Scarce U.S. Springfield Model 1877 Trapdoor Carbine

This is an example of a very rarely encountered U.S. Springfield Model 1877 Carbine manufactured circa 1877-1878 using Model 1873 Carbines as the base. The Model 1877 incorporated a number of modifications, including a butt trap in the stock for a three-piece steel cleaning rod and headless shell extractor, (not included), with the latter added as a result of combat experience at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Additionally, the 1877 is equipped with an early pattern buttplate to match the butt trap, and a short wrist, long comb stock, which was more rugged than the Model 1873's long wrist. The buttplate tang is marked "US". The lock plate has the two-line, "U.S./SPRINGFIELD", inscription without the "1873" date used until 1877 and the eagle and shield motif in front of the hammer. The high arch breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873", and the left side of the barrel is marked with the small "V/P/Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection markings that are typically found on carbines in the 40,000-60,000 serial number range but which are occasionally found on carbines in the 75,000-80,000 range. The carbine has the three-click tumbler added around serial number 73,000 and hammer with stamped knurling in an oval pattern on the spur. The rear sight is the Model 1873 pattern with 500 yard graduations on the right side of the base and 1200 yard graduation on the right side of the leaf. Notes from a previous owner state that Model 1877 Carbines in this serial number range were issued to the 7th Cavalry in 1881.

Condition: Good. The carbine shows handling wear that is typical of field-carried weapons. Showing a mottled brown-gray patina on the metal components, light pitting on the barrel band and heavier pitting on the heel of the buttplate. The stock is fair to good as refinished and repaired, with a replaced chip in the forearm and upper left rear of the stock, cracking of the wrist and buttstock. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. This is a good solid example of a scarce Springfield Model 1877 Carbine.

Historic Inscribed Scarce U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1898 Krag Saddle Ring Carbine with Sword

Lot # 1330 (Sale Order: 331 of 952)

Historic Inscribed Scarce U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1898 Krag Saddle Ring Carbine with Sword

Only 5,000 Model 1898 carbines were manufactured by Springfield Armory in 1898 and 1899 with this example being manufactured in 1898. The serial number range for Model 1898 Carbines fall within the Model 1898 Rifle range. Observed carbine serial numbers range from 118,894 to 134,256. Blade front sight and folding leaf rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards and marked with a "C" on the upper right hand corner of the leaf. The left side of the base has even numbered graduations from 2 to 6. Standard receiver markings and mounted with a smooth one-piece straight grip stock with finger grooves in the forearm, saddle ring and bar on the left side of the stock, visible "JSA/1898" cartouche on the left wrist, circled "P" on the bottom of the grip area and steel buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included). The right side of the buttstock has a plaque with an inscription thanking the previous owners, Capt. and Mrs. C.D. Stearns, for loaning the rifle "for the defense of Britain in a time of dire necessity." The rifle was given with "grateful thanks" from R.B. Pullin & Co. Ltd., a British maker of scientific instruments founded in 1932. The rifle was one of thousands of firearms Americans sent to England in an effort to supply the British Home Guard during the early years of WWII. Research has found the Capt. Clark Daniel Stearns served as the Commanding Officer board the U.S.S. Roanoke, a merchant passenger-cargo ship that was converted to 7,620 ton minelayer in order to serve with the U.S. Atlantic Fleet during World War I. In 1918 the Roanoke assisted in operations against German U-boats. Before the Navy returned the ship to its original owners, the Roanoke was modified to a transport ship and made four voyages across the Atlantic bringing American troops back to the U.S. after the armistice. For his efforts as the CO of the Roanoke, Stearns was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. Prior to WWI Stearns was the 9th Governor of American Samoa from 1913 to 1914 and would later be relieved of his command of the battleship U.S.S. Michigan "for allowing the men under his command to organize committees" in 1921. These committees allowed for enlisted men to give suggestions to the officers and was done in an attempt to alleviate tensions. Stearns died in 1944 aboard a submarine stationed in Miami of a coronary thrombosis. He was 74 years old. With the carbine is a Horstmann 1850 Navy sword with scabbard. The etched Damascus blade has the motto "Right on my side and Justice" on the left side and "Clark Daniel Stearns" on the left side.

Condition: Very good plus. The barrel retains traces of faded original blue finish with a smooth brown patina showing some minor pitting. The receiver has a mottled gray patina. The wood is very good with a couple hairline cracks and a chip repair near the receiver, some surface chipping and some minor pressure dents and scratches. The cartouche is clear. Mechanically fine. The sword is very good with much of the Damascus pattern remaining and some very scattered mild pitting. The etching is crisp. The scabbard is good with the hardware having a smooth dark aged patina.
