Extremely Rare Documented Colt Model 1900 Sight Safety/Browning Slide Lock Prototype Semi-Automatic

Lot # 1775 (Sale Order: 776 of 952)

Extremely Rare Documented Colt Model 1900 Sight Safety/Browning Slide Lock Prototype Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is a unique documented Colt Model 1900 prototype Browning Slide Lock prototype pistol built on a Colt Model 1900 Sight Safety semi-automatic pistol. There are 5 important patents issued to Colts during the evolution of the design of the 1911 Government Model pistol. The first prototype demonstrates the ?Parallel Ruler? hesitation locking feature which made possible the use of powerful pistol cartridges in this and future Colts Government Model pistols. That hesitation lock prototype is in a Browning family collection in Ogden, Utah. This Slide Lock Prototype features the slide lock feature allowing faster reloading and now a feature of almost all semi automatic pistols. It was the prototype for the second patent of the five. The remaining three patent prototypes for the single link barrel, grip safety, thumb safety and other features are now in private collections. John Browning developed and engineered this fix specifically to resolve one of the weaknesses identified during the U.S. Army test of the Model 1900 pistol. Testers remarked that it took two hands to get back into action after the last shot was fired and asked for a design change to allow for faster reloading. Using this pistol, serial number 1433, as a base John Browning personally made the modifications which backed up the patent application and served as the model for production adoption of the improvement. This specific pistol is photographed and described on page 66, 67 of the book ?The Government Models? by W.H.D. Goddard. As noted it still retains the rear sight/safety with the left side of the slide marked with the two line/two block marking of: ?BROWNING?S PATENT?/PAT?D APRIL 20. 1897? followed by ?COLT?S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO./HARTFORD. CONN. U.S.A.? with the circled Rampant Colt trademark behind the serrations. The right side of the slide is marked: ?AUTOMATIC COLT/CALIBRE 38 RIMLESS SMOKELESS? ahead of the ejection port. The left side of the frame has the serial number ?1433? with a small hole directly behind it with the Browning handmade prototype slide stop as pictured in the above noted reference. This pistol has the high polish Colt commercial blue finish with niter blue barrel and trigger, casehardened rear sight and hammer with smooth walnut grips. This pistol still retains its original all blue and unmarked prototype magazine that has the small square notch cut on the left front edge of the magazine that is designed to allow the magazine follower to actuate the slide stop lever. Provenance: Shipped to Browning Bros. January 4, 1901, Colts Factory Collection, Collection of The Connecticut State Library, Collection of William H. D. Goddard.

Condition: Extremely fine as modified by John Browning with 90% of the original blue finish overall, slightly fading on the grip straps with scratches on the side of the frame with a rub spot on the center, left side of the slide (where the notch was cut for the slide stop). The markings are clear and intact. The grips are very fine with nice original color on both sides showing minor handling marks and scratches overall from actual field use. A super rare opportunity for the advanced Colt collector to be able to purchase a truly significant Colt Model 1900 Prototype pistol.

Documented Rare Russian Contract Colt .45 Government Model Semi-Automatic Pistol with Factory Letter

Lot # 1776 (Sale Order: 777 of 952)

Documented Rare Russian Contract Colt .45 Government Model Semi-Automatic Pistol with Factory Letter

Russian Contract Colt Government Model pistol with Colt factory letter. The letter states that this pistol, serial number "C66614", was one of 300 Government Model Automatic Pistols shipped to the "Government of Russia" on October 7, 1916. The Imperial Russian government purchased 51,000 commercial .45 Government Model pistols from Colt between February 1916 and January 1917. The Russian Contract pistols were marked with the abbreviated Cyrillic marking "English Order" on the left side of the frame. A Colt Russian Contract Government Model is believed to have been one of the weapons used to execute the Czar of Russia and his family on July 16, 1918. Very few Russian Contract Government Model pistols survived WWI and the Russian Revolution to return to the United States. The Russian Contract pistols are one of the hardest of all the Colt Government Model, M1911 and M1911A1 variations to obtain. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Cyrillic markings "ENGLISH ORDER". The Colt 'Triangle/VP' proofmark is stamped on the left front of the trigger guard bow and a "Y" assembler's mark is stamped on the rear of the bow. The right side of the frame is roll-stamped "GOVERNMENT MODEL/C 66614" behind the disconnector hole. The right side of the slide is roll-stamped "COLT AUTOMATIC/CALIBRE 45" in front of the ejection port. The left side of the slide is roll-stamped with the Colt 1897-1913 patent dates in a two-line block followed by the two-line Hartford address. The Rampant Colt trademark is roll-stamped on the left side of the slide behind the grip serrations. All of the frame and slide markings use the early Roman (serif) style letters. The top of the frame has a "P" stamped to the right of the disconnector hole and "H" stamped behind it. A small "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the lug. A "U" sub-inspection mark is stamped in front of the proofmark. The pistol has the correct short hammer with rounded rear edge, safety lock with thick thumb-piece and slide stop with plunger groove. The barrel is blue with a polished chamber. The oil-finished checkered walnut grips have diamond escutcheons surrounding the grip screws. The pistol has a two-tone flat base magazine.

Condition: Very fine. The pistol has been professionally restored. The slide, frame and small components have a commercial blue finish that is indistinguishable from the original Commercial Colt blue. All of the markings on the left side of the frame are sharp. The grips are excellent. The magazine has nearly 95% of the blue finish. Russian Contract pistols are extremely rare in any condition and are invariably in poor condition from hard service in a hostile environment. Very few, if any, Russian Contract Government Model Pistols exist in excellent or better original condition. This example of a Russian Contract Government Model Automatic pistol is in the condition that it would have appeared when it was shipped to Russia in 1916. This is a great example of a key piece in any collection of Colt firearms or Colt Automatic Pistols.

Fabulous Extremely Early Original 1912 Commercial Production Colt Government Model Semi-Automatic Pistol with Serial Number C502

This is an unbelievable example of a super early first year production Colt Government Model that was manufactured in 1912. These early Colt Government pistols in high end condition are nearly impossible to find, as they saw heavy use when first introduced. These early pistols were some of the best that Colt ever produced, as they had all hand fitted slides, frames and parts with the beautiful early Colt high polish commercial blue finish with niter blue small parts and fine checkered walnut grips. This example has all the early features, such as the early style Colt slide markings, narrow rounded half-moon front sight, rounded rear sight with the small round sight cut, thin checkered thumb safety with the sharp edge and milled undercuts, early short checkered slide stop release. Early Colt 1911 barrel that is only marked with a small "NT" Colt inspectors proof on the underside in front of the lug, and the early first style Colt serif serial number (C502) and "GOVERNMENT MODEL" markings on the sides of the frame. This beautiful Colt is complete with an early half-blued magazine with the lanyard loop on the underside of the double pinned baseplate. The right side of the slide is marked "COLT AUTOMATIC/CALIBRE 45" the left side is marked "PATENTED APR.20, 1897/SEPT. 9, 1902/DEC.19, 1905. FEB.14, 1911" followed by "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A." with the Rampant Colt behind the slide serrations. The right side of the receiver is marked "GOVERNMENT MODEL / C502" in front of the slide stop pin hole. The left trigger guard bow is stamped with the Colt "VP / Triangle" proof mark and "K" is stamped on the lower left of the trigger guard. This fabulous example is one of the earliest Commercial Colt Government Model pistols we have had the opportunity to offer for sale.

Condition: Excellent with 97% plus of the original Colt high polish blue finish with some minor edge and high spot and some with minor thinning on the main spring housing. The slide stop release, thumb safety, hammer, trigger magazine release, hammer and sear/disconnector pins all retain 90% of the beautiful Colt niter blue finish. The checkered walnut grips are excellent plus with sharp original checkering. As noted this pistol is all original. Rare and Magnificent Factory Engraved Colt Officers Model Double Action Target Revolver with Fabulou

Lot # 1780 (Sale Order: 781 of 952)

Rare and Magnificent Factory Engraved Colt Officers Model Double Action Target Revolver with Fabulous Gold Initial Inlaid Mother of Pearl Grips

This is a spectacular example of a very early Colt Officers Model DA Target revolver that was manufactured in late 1909 which has been beautifully engraved in a Cuno Helfricht pattern and fitted with a set of Mother of Pearl Grips with large Gold initial inlayed in the right grip. If you could afford to own one of these early Colt Officers Model target revolvers that was a true mark of superior marksman and to have one that was factory engraved was usually only reserved for the very rich and/or elite top shooters in the shooting fraternity. These were beautifully manufactured revolvers that were hand built to exacting accuracy requirements and were the best target pistol at this time. They had flat top target type frames, adjustable front and rear sights, checkered trigger and back strap with a super smooth, hand honed, double and single action trigger pull. This exceptional pistol has also been beautifully engraved in a magnificent Cuno Helfricht pattern that covers over 75% (C coverage) of the metal surfaces. The Helfricht family was actively engraving from approximately 1870-1920, with this example falling right in the middle of those dates. The pattern consists of a beautiful laid out scroll engraving intermixed with several geometric patterns. The scroll engraving has a heavy punch-dot background covering the flats of the frame, sides of the barrel with an alternating pattern on the flutes of the cylinder, with geometric engraving on the borders, around some of the factory markings, sides of the top strap, front edges of the frame and cylinder crane and radiuses on both sides of the hammer. The grips as noted are Mother of Pearl and have the gold wire inlayed intertwined "JJR" initials on the right side. Even the top flats of the initials have been embellished with a punch-dot surface on the "R" and a cross-hatched pattern on the "JJ to give them a contrasting appearance. The metal surfaces have the original Colt high polish blue finish with the Colt niter blue on the trigger, rear sight, frame screw heads, and top surfaces of the hammer. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber, barrel length, blur finish, factory engraving, pearl grips with "JJR" inlaid in gold on the right panel and that it was shipped as 1 to Morrell Hardware (no address available) on April 15, 1910. A wonderful example of a Master level gun engraver from the 1910 era.BR>
Condition: Excellent with 95% plus of the original high polish blue finish overall with minor wear on the edges and high spots sides of the muzzle, with browning and spotting on the front grip strap. The grips are excellent with no visible chipping or cracking, which is rare as these are very fragile grips. The gold wire inlayed initials are still tight in the grips. The engraving is just superb, beautifully laid out and executed with no over runs or corrections. A fantastic example of a Factory Engraved Colt Officer's Model DA Target Revolver.

Extremely Rare Pre-War Colt Government Model Exercito Brasileiro (Brazilian Contract) Automatic Pist

Lot # 1783 (Sale Order: 784 of 952)

Extremely Rare Pre-War Colt Government Model Exercito Brasileiro (Brazilian Contract) Automatic Pistol

This is a fabulous example of an original Colt Government Model Semi-Automatic Pistol that was manufactured under contract for the country of Brazil. There were approximately 14,500 made in total under this contract in the 1937/38 time frame with very few ever seen in the United States. Eventually the country of Brazil adopted the Model 1911A1 as their standard pistol, and started producing them at the State/Military run IMBEL factory. These pistols conform in all respects to the standard military models manufactured during this time, except they lack the U.S. military proof and acceptance marks. The right side of the frame is marked "GOVERNMENT MODEL/C196230" with the left side trigger guard bow marked with the standard small "P" and Colt "VP" Verified Proof inside a small Triangle, with the right side of trigger bow marked number "77". The left side of the slide has an unusual Colt's three-line markings that consist of the Colt address and patent markings used from 1937-40, with an additional marking below that of "CAL .45 AUTOMATIC", obviously intended to alert the user that this was a nonstandard caliber. The right side of the slide has the single Brazilian country/military crest with the following in two lines "EXERCITO BRASILEIRO No5620/1937. The slide is correctly numbered (196/230) above and below the firing pin stop plate. The pistol has the standard checkered trigger, arched mainspring housing, thumb safety and slide stop and it is fitted with a set of checkered walnut grips. The blue barrel has a polished chamber area and is marked on the left side "COLT 45 AUTO". It is complete with one half-tone blue magazine that is marked "COLT/45 AUTO" on the bottom of the base plate.

Condition: Excellent with 97% of the blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear, with the very front edge of the slide having some very minor, microscopic pin-prick pitting, where it was in contract with a holster. The grips are also in excellent condition with very nice distinct checkering on both sides, showing a hint of wear across the tops of the checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Excellent Pre-War Colt Ace Model .22 Automatic Pistol with Original Matching Number Factory Box

Manufactured in 1933. The right side of the slide has the distinctive marking "COLT" followed by "ACE" in a diamond and ".22 LONG/RIFLE". The left side of the slide is marked with the elongated two line Colt Hartford address/patent dates followed by the Rampant Colt. The right side of the frame is marked with the serial number "4421". A "3" assembler's mark and the Colt "triangle/VP" proofmark are stamped on the upper left trigger guard bow, and "20" on the opposite. The top of the frame is stamped with an "R" production order mark to the right of the disconnector hole. Colt commercial blue finish, original Colt Ace marked two tone magazine, blue barrel with bright chamber, half moon blade front and adjustable rear target sights, and fitted with checkered walnut grips. The heel correctly lacks the lanyard loop found on Model 1911A1 pistols. The Colt Ace was introduced by Colt in 1931 as a companion arm to the Model 1911A1 Government Model. Approximately 10,745 Ace pistols were manufactured by Colt before production ceased in July 1941. The pistol is complete with the original hinged lid maroon box correctly numbered to the gun on the bottom in grease pencil. One end of the box has the blue "ACE" label with white print. The interior of the box lid and bottom are printed with Colt advertising. The box is complete with a blue steel screwdriver and some original packing material.

Condition: Excellent. The pistol retains 98% of the bright original high polish commercial blue finish. The only wear is some minor finish loss on the edges of the slide. The grips are also excellent with light handling marks and sharp checkering. The magazine retains nearly 98% of the original blue finish. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. The box is very good with wear limited to several minor dents in the lid, some scuff marks on the edges and some minor flaking on the corners. The tool is excellent. Documented U.S. Army Colt Model 1911 Black Army Semi-Automatic Pistol Used in 1933 Kansas City Mafia

Lot # 1799 (Sale Order: 800 of 952)

Documented U.S. Army Colt Model 1911 Black Army Semi-Automatic Pistol Used in 1933 Kansas City Mafia Murder

Manufactured in May 1918 and the accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber, barrel length, blue finish with grips as "Not Listed" and that it was shipped to the Ordnance Depot, Bush Terminal, Brooklyn, New York as part of a lot of 15,000 pistols on July 22, 1918. The pistols sent to the Bush Terminal were subsequently shipped to the American Expeditionary Force in France. Documents that accompany this pistol state that it was used by Mafia member Charles "Mad Dog" Gargotta to murder rival gangster Feris Anthon in Kansas City, Missouri on August 12, 1933. After killing Anthon, Gargotta and two other gang members engaged in a gun battle with Sheriff Thomas B. Bash. Sheriff Bash killed two of the gangsters and captured Gargotta after he allegedly emptied this pistol at Bash. The pistol was introduced by the prosecution as "Exhibit A" at Gargotta's murder trial and was identified by serial number in a "Kansas City Star" article dated May 5, 1934. The prosecution attempted to link this pistol to the Anthon murder by use of ballistic evidence. Gargotta was acquitted of the murder charge but was jailed and fined for possession of stolen government property (this pistol). This pistol was documented as one of several weapons stolen from a National Guard Armory by Gargotta and members of the John Lazia/Charles Binaggio Kansas City crime syndicate several years prior to the Anthon murder. Charles Gargotta subsequently testified about his organized crime activities (he was arrested more than 40 times on charges that ranged from extortion to murder). As a result of this testimony both Gargotta and Mafia associate Binaggio were murdered in 1950. The pistol is an original unaltered U.S. Army Colt Model 1911 automatic pistol with Black Army, low polish blue finish, blue barrel, checkered walnut grips with diamond screw escutcheons and two-tone flat base magazine. The slide has the larger (7/64-inch) "MODEL OF 1911.U.S. ARMY" markings and late pattern recoil spring housing introduced about serial number 290,000. The left side of the frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" and stamped with the "Eagle Head/S5" Ordnance Inspection stamp. The pistol retains the correct short hammer with bordered knurling on the spur and 1914 pattern safety lock used until mid-1918. The top of the frame is stamped with an "H" provisional inspection marks and a "G" government contract mark. A "G" is stamped on the left rear of the slide next to the hammer slot and the "H" provisional inspection mark is stamped in the hammer slot above the firing pin stop. The top of the barrel chamber is stamped with a "H" and a "P" proofmark. The magazine has an "A" contractor marking on the top of the floor plate and is the correct magazine for this pistol. The barrel, slide, hammer, safety lock and other components have identical finish wear and appear to be original to this pistol. The pistol is accompanied by extensive documentation relating to the Anthon murder, the Gargotta trial and Mafia activities in Kansas City. It also comes with a copy of the book "Open City True Story of the KC Crime Family 1900-1950" by William Ouseley. This is one of the very few weapons that can be positively identified as a Mafia pistol used in a notorious gang murder and violent shoot-out. It is an extremely historic pistol with solid provenance from 1918 to 1933.

Condition: Good. The pistol has a smooth blue brown patina with traces of the original dull blue finish and extensive handling wear. The pistol components show identical wear and patina. All of the markings are sharp. The grips are good with moderate to heavy handling wear. The magazine is fine with most of the original blue finish. The floor plate shows the same moderate to heavy wear as the pistol. Mechanically fine. This is a unique and historic pistol with outstanding provenance.
