Historic Extremely Rare Cased Presentation From The Prime Minister of Israel To General Walter Bedel

Lot # 1817 (Sale Order: 818 of 952)

Historic Extremely Rare Cased Presentation From The Prime Minister of Israel To General Walter Bedell Smith IMI Double Action Military Revolver

This is an extremely rare IMI manufactured revolver. Only 52 of these revolvers were manufactured in 1952 and 1953 and all given as presents. The revolver is a copy of the Smith & Wesson Model 1917 45 caliber revolver, however the IMI revolver is chambered in the 9 mm Parabellum cartridge. It also comes with half moon clips to accommodate rimless ammunition. This particular revolver was presented to General Walter Bedell Smith from David Ben-Gurion the Prime Minister of Israel. General Smith started his military career as a private in the Indiana National Guard and rose to coordinating the entire planning of the invasion of North Africa and Normandy in World War II. He was General Dwight D. Eisenhower's Chief of Staff through most of the war, with the two becoming known as "Ike and Beetle". Winston Churchill nicknamed him "Bulldog" because of his tenacity in handling problems. Eisenhower once described Smith as "the general manager of the war," and he signed the Italian surrender document in September of 1943 on Eisenhowers behalf and in 1945 he headed the Allied group which accepted the unconditional surrender of Germany. When Eisenhower became President in 1953 the two were once again united with Smith being the Undersecretary of State. The only markings on the revolver are the IMI logo over the serial number on the right rear of the frame. The revolver looks almost identical to the Smith & Wesson Model 1917 with a different contour to the hammer and a slimmer grip frame. Blade front and frame notch rear sights, all blue finish and fitted with smooth varnished walnut grips and lanyard loop on the butt. The revolver comes in an Israeli olivewood case with purple velvet lining. The upper left hand corner of the lid has a silver "WBS" monogram and the inside of the lid has a silver plaque which reads "TO/LT. GENERAL WALTER BEDELL SMITH/IN APPRECIATION/DAVID BEN GURION/PRIME MINISTER OF ISRAEL". In the case is a box containing 13 half moon clips. The revolver is also accompanied by letters of correspondence from American gun expert Jac Weller and IMI, which give a brief history of the revolver. There is also a copy of General Smith's obituary.

Condition: Excellent. The revolver retains 98% original dull military blue finish with a couple of minor scratches and dings in the area of the cylinder release, and a minor drag line on the cylinder. The grips are also excellent with 99% plus original varnish remaining showing only a few light handling marks. The action is excellent. The case is extremely fine with two separated partitions and some minor wear from cylinder contact. An extremely rare IMI manufactured revolver presented to one of World War II's greatest Generals from the Prime Minister of Israel. A must have for the most advanced military collection or museum.

Extremely Rare Documented Colt Government Model 1911 Russian Contract Semi-Automatic Pistol with Fac

Lot # 1819 (Sale Order: 820 of 952)

Extremely Rare Documented Colt Government Model 1911 Russian Contract Semi-Automatic Pistol with Factory Letter

This is an extremely rare Colt Government Model Russian contract semi-automatic pistol that has been verified as authentic via Colt factory letter dated Feb 2010. During the 1914-1916 time frame the Russian Army was severely short of arms and ammunition and was forced to purchase thousands of weapons from abroad based on credits that the Russian Government had negotiated with Great Britain. These credits were supported by the Gold reserves held in Russia, however all the contracts had to be placed with Great Britain on behalf of Russia. Because of this Russia was able to purchase Colt pistols through Great Britain. During 1916-1917, Russia purchased approximately 51,000 Colt Model 1911 commercial pistols. These were standard Colt commercial models that did not have any specific Russian acceptance proofs, however the left side of the frame is marked in Cyrillic letters "ANGL. ZAKAZY", which roughly translate to "English Orders". These are an extremely rare pistol, almost no examples were ever reimported back into this country. These pistols fall into the serial number range of "C23000 to C89000", with this example being mid-way in the production run. The left side of the slide has the standard Colt pre-war commercial slide and has the two-line, two-block markings of "PATENTED APR. 20.1897. SEPT.9.1902, DEC. 19. 1905. FEB.14.1911. AUG 19.1913" followed by "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." with the Rampant Colt behind the rear of the slide serrations. The right side of the slide is marked "COLT AUTOMATIC/CALIBRE 45". The left side of the frame is marked with the correct Russian Cyrillic markings noted above with the right side marked "GOVERNMENT MODEL/C56231". The barrel is an all blue version, with the separate "H P" proofmarks on top of the chamber area with a small sub inspector proof of "D" and "L" on each side of the lug. It also has the early style (1914 pattern) checkered thumb safety, a serrated slide stop release, Colt wide-spur checkered hammer, flat smooth mainspring housing, along with a set of checkered walnut grips.

Condition: Fine with 70% of the blue finish overall showing wear on the edges and high spots, mixed with scattered surface rust and brown patina. The grips are in fine plus condition with nice original checkering overall with some minor handling marks, with light wear across the tops of the checkering on both sides. The left side of the slide, directly opposite the chamber area has a slight bulge showing. A scarce and desirable early Colt 1911 Russian Contract pistol. What a story it could tell!

Documented Historical Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless Pistol Issued to Major General Herbert Norma

Lot # 1822 (Sale Order: 823 of 952)

Documented Historical Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless Pistol Issued to Major General Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf Sr. with Springfield Research Letter

This is a very nice example of a Colt Model 1903 issued to Major General Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf Sr. in 1956. General Schwarzkopf was a 1917 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and after receiving a commission as Second Lieutenant in the cavalry, he was sent to war torn Europe where he survived a mustard gas attack and later served as a Provost Marshal during the occupation following the conclusion of WWI. In 1921, the General returned to the U.S. with the rank of Colonel and was appointed by the New Jersey Governor to head the newly formed New Jersey State Police, which he shaped into an effective law enforcement agency. The General was among the first officials called to the residence of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh following the kidnapping of his son and remained on the Lindbergh kidnapping case until its conclusion. After clashing with a new governor, General Schwarzkopf was fired from the New Jersey State Police in 1936. He went on to narrate the radio program Gang Busters and then reenlisted in the U.S. Army at the beginning of WWII. He was posted in Iran in 1942 and organized the country's police force. After WWII he took part in the CIA's Operation Ajax to convince the self-exiled Iranian monarch, Mohammad Reza Shah, to return and seize power and would organize a security force to support the Shah, which later became the SAVAK. He achieved the rank of Major General before retiring in 1953. General Schwarzkopf is the father of one of the most famous late 20th century commanders, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr., the commander of Coalition forces for Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Schwarzkopf Sr. died in 1958 from complications of lung cancer and is buried at West Point Cemetery. This pistol was manufactured in 1945. The left side of the slide is marked with the elongated two line address/patent dates, the right side is marked "COLT AUTOMATIC/CALIBRE 32 RIMLESS SMOKELESS", the right side of the frame is marked U.S. PROPERTY" and the serial number is on the left side. Low profile fixed sights, parkerized finish, two tone magazine marked "CAL. 32/COLT" on the bottom and fitted with checkered walnut grips with silver Colt medallions. The pistol is listed by serial number on page 97 of "The Colt U.S. General Officers Pistol" by Horace Greeley as being issued in 1956 and a copy of the accompanying Springfield Research service letter identifies U.S. 1903 Colt automatic pistol serial number 571358 as a 32 caliber pistol issued to Major General H. N. Schwarzkopf (SCHWARZKOPF H N MG) on August 8, 1956."
