Excellent U.S. Colt Transitional Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Factory Documentation

Lot # 1856 (Sale Order: 857 of 952)

Excellent U.S. Colt Transitional Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Factory Documentation

Developed in 1923 on orders from the Ordnance Department, the Improved Model 1911 pistols were equipped with a shorter trigger, dished out receiver sides, extended grip safety, arched mainspring housing and widened front sight, essentially making them the first government contract pistols to conform to the 1911A1 standard. This particular model comes with a factory letter, identifying it as part of a 2,998 pistol delivery made to the Springfield Armory on July 25, 1924, with the letter explicitly calling it a "Transition Model" and calling out the "new style" trigger, safety and mainspring housing. Fixed sights, with the two line, two block address and patent dates on the left side, divided by the Rampant Colt, and "MODEL OF 1911.U.S.ARMY" on the right. Captain Walter T. Gordon's "WTG" inspection mark on the left side of the frame, with "60" on the trigger guard and "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" on the right side. Equipped with a Colt barrel (conjoined "HP" stamp), checkered wide hammer, slide catch, thumb safety, trigger and mainspring housing, checkered grips and a two-tone magazine.

Condition: Excellent, with 98% plus of the original blue finish, with a few scratches from the slide catch and some light handling marks. The grips are of equal quality, showing crisp and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent. An important milestone in the development of American small arms, in a state of condition that may be impossible to beat.

Scarce U.S. Army Contract Remington-UMC Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol

Lot # 1857 (Sale Order: 858 of 952)

Scarce U.S. Army Contract Remington-UMC Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is an very nice original example of a very scarce late WWI "Remington-UMC" U.S. Army Model 1911 contract pistol. These rare pistols were manufactured in late 1918/early 1919, their own serial number block of "1 to 21,676", with this pistol being manufactured in early 1918. This series of pistol was manufactured totally by the Remington Arms-U.M.C. Co., in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Almost all of these pistols were disposed of after WWI because they did not conform to the standardization requirements for part interchangeability with the Colt Model 1911 pistol. The left side of the slide is roll stamped in two blocks with "PATENTED DEC.19.1905/FEB.14.1911.AUG.19.1913./COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO." followed by "MANUFACTURED BY/REMINGTON ARMS UMC CO. INC./BRIDGEPORT. CONN.U.S.A.", with the circled, "REMINGTON/UMC" logo between the two blocks. The right side of the slide has the two-line markings "MODEL OF 1911/U.S. ARMY CALIBER .45". The left side of the frame extension is stamped with "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" with the final U.S. Government inspector's initials "E.E.C."/"Eagle Head/E1" Ordnance inspection mark above the magazine release button. The serial number "NO 783" is stamped on the right side of the frame above the trigger. The right side of the barrel lug is stamped with a partial "P" proofmark with no other proofmarks. The rear of the slide above the firing pin stop is stamped with a single letter "E" provisional inspection mark and so is the left side of the trigger guard bow. The overall finish and wear patterns of both the slide and frame match exactly with the breech end of the underside of the slide numbered "285". This scarce early M1911 is complete with one early all blue magazine with the double pinned base plate with the lanyard loop on the underside. This scarce early pistol is complete with an early Mexican style embossed leather holster. The holster is similar to the type typically seem worn by Texas Rangers in the early 1920s and 30s. The front has been nicely hand stamped with raised floral pattern with a decorative border around the edges. The back has a single belt loop, but it has been modified with extra cutouts for a wider belt.

Condition: Fine condition with 40% of the original finish remaining overall. The markings are clear and sharp. The grips are fine with nice distinct checkering on both sides, showing light wear across the tops of the checkering mixed with some minor handling marks. The holster is very good with nice decorative embossing on the front with tight stitching overall. Although this pistol seems to be a little down in condition it is all original and extremely early production Remington-UMC M1911 and any one of these that you can find that is still all complete and original is considered to be very scarce and highly desirable.

Excellent Late World War I Colt M1911 U.S. Army Semi-Automatic Pistol

Lot # 1858 (Sale Order: 859 of 952)

Excellent Late World War I Colt M1911 U.S. Army Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is a very fine example of an original late WWI U.S. Army contract Model 1911 pistol, as manufactured by the Colt firearms company in late 1918. This pistol was manufactured in the last block of serial numbers at the very end of WWI. Although this pistol is in the last block of serial numbers it is in a unique subset of pistols that has the new later style block letter markings (vs. the earlier serifs letters) but still retains the earlier Colt military brushed blue finish and not the late "Black Army" finish. The left side of the slide has the standard Colt factory two-line, two-block markings with the Rampant Colt behind the slide serrations. The right side is marked "MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY". The left side of the frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" and has the circled "JMG" proof of LTC J.M. Gilbert, above the magazine release and the right side is stamped with the serial number "230835" of the pistol. The pistol still retains the correct original WWI parts such as the checkered Colt wide spur hammer, flat main spring housing, checkered slide stop and thick type III thumb safety. It is fitted with a WWI Colt barrel that is marked over the chamber area with the separated "H" and "P" proofmarks with a single number "5" on the underside in front of the lug. This fine pistol still retains the original WWI Colt diamond pattern checkered walnut grips and is complete with one half-tone magazine.

Condition: Very fine overall with 75% plus of the blue finish remaining with the balance a light spotty brown patina. The grips are very fine with nice distinct checkering on both sides, mixed with some minor handling marks. A very nice all original example of a late WWI Colt M1911 U.S. Army contract pistol.

Lot # 1859 (Sale Order: 860 of 952)

Exceptional World War I U.S. Army Colt Contract Model 1911 Semi-Automatic with World War I Aeronautical Documents and Holster

This is a beautiful example of a early 1918 US Army, Colt contract pistol that is accompanied with a set of documents (provided by the consignor) from James Burrell who was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Service ( Aeronautics) in June 1918. The pistol itself is a very nice late totally original WWI military contract pistol that has the new "block" style markings but still retains the wartime brushed blue military finish, diamond checkered walnut grips and the two-tone magazine. The accompanying documents for Mr. Burrell include a certificate awarding him a Corporal-Sharpshooter in July 1916, he received a Certificate of Graduation from the US School of Military Aeronautics, at Princeton University, February 1918 and then was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army "Air Service" (Aeronautics) in June 1918. His service record which also accompanies this lot notes that he entered service as a Pilot Flying Cadet in Oct 1917 and was subsequently discharged in late June 1918. It would certainly be worth doing some additional research to determine who James Burrell actually was. The right side of the frame is stamped with the serial number: "No 219896" behind the slide stop hole and the right side of the slide is marked "MODEL OF 1911.U.S.ARMY". The left side of the slide is marked with the 1897-1913 patent dates in a two-line block followed by the two-line Hartford address, with the Rampant Colt behind the slide serrations. The left side of the frame is stamped with the circled initials "GHS" monogram of the US Army Ordnance inspector Gilbert H. Stewart. The top flat of the frame around the disconnector hole is stamped with the small Provisional Ordnance Inspector's, assembler's and Colt production order proofmark that consists of a small "H", "W" and "G" proof. The blue barrel has a separated "P" and "H" proofmark stamped on the chamber and it is fitted with the correct WWI blue and checkered thumb safety, slide release, flat main spring housing and Colt wide spur checkered hammer. It has the correct diamond checkered walnut grips and is complete with the correct two-tone blue magazine. The pistol is accompanied by an original WWI brown leather "US" marked flap holster stamped on the back, "G&K/ 1917/J.A.O."

Condition: Excellent overall. The pistol retains 98% plus of the crisp original brushed blue military finish with some minor flaking on the lower rear edge of the main spring housing and edges, the chamber area of the barrel, and a hint of blue thinning on the front grip strap. The grips are excellent showing light wear across the tops of the crisp checkering with some very minor nicks and chips and a small pressure dent in the middle of the left panel. The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent. The holster is very good with some light wear and tight stitching. An exceptional example of a late WWI Colt contract Model 1911 pistol.

U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Rifle with Warner & Swasey Telescopic Sight and Case

Lot # 1866 (Sale Order: 867 of 952)

U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Rifle with Warner & Swasey Telescopic Sight and Case

This is an example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1903 rifle that was manufactured in 1915 and subsequently fitted (unknown as to when) with a Model 1913 Warner & Swasey 5.2 X telescopic sight. The rifle has a case-hardened receiver and military blue barrel, barrel bands, rear sight base, bolt, trigger guard and floor plate. The rifle has a checkered buttplate, straight bolt handle, grooved trigger, folding leaf rear sight with bright finished face and 2750 yard center notch, small dished elevation screw and large dished windage screw. The black, oil-finished, walnut "S" stock has grasping grooves and a single reinforcing bolt. The handguard has the rear sight clearance cut and spring clips that were introduced c. 1910. The top of the receiver is roll-stamped with the standard Springfield Armory markings and the serial number "513679". The top of the barrel behind the rear sight base is roll-stamped: "SA", above the Ordnance 'Shell & Flame' insignia and is dated "8-15". The magazine cut-off lever has a polished "ON" side and is marked with Roman (serif) letters. The safety lever has the later Gothic letter markings without serifs. The left side of the stock is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection mark that consist of the block initials "J.F.C." with a rectangular border. An encircled, block, "P" proof mark is stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard. A small "S" is stamped on the tip of the forearm. The telescopic sight has a black enamel finish and a black rubber eyepiece. The left side of the sight body is stamped with the factory legend, "MODEL OF 1913" and "No. 4198". Brass plates stamped with windage ad drift corrections are screwed to the top of the telescopic sight body and the eyepiece. The sight base has the distinctive windage and elevation knobs Model 1913 Warner & Swasey sights were individually fitted to selected, star-gauged, Model 1903 rifles and were stamped with the rifle serial number in the mount dove-tail. The inside of the sight dovetail on this rifle is not stamped with a rifle serial number. The sight bracket is attached to the left side of the receiver by three screws. The screws are staked on the inside of the receiver. The upper edge of the stock is inletted to accept the sight bracket. The sight is accompanied by a WWI case for a Warner & Swasey sight; the case has been dyed black. The back of the case is stamped with the maker's name "DIAMOND "D"" and the inspection mark "A.B.D.". The case is missing the leather shoulder strap. The Army fitted 3014 Warner & Swasey Model 1913 telescopic sights to Model 1903 rifles between 1916 and 1918. A significant number of Model 1913 telescopic sights purchased by the Ordnance Department during WWI were not serial numbered and were probably never fitted to Model 1903 rifles.

Condition: Good as refinished and assembled. The rifle retains traces of the original blue and parkerized finish; the balance of the finish has aged to a smooth, dark, patina. There is evidence of a receiver sight having been removed and holes plugged. Most of the bright finish is present on the rear sight leaf and the "ON" side of the cut-off. The barrel and receiver markings are clear. The reoiled stock is in very good condition with sharp edges on the grasping grooves, and clear final inspection and proof marks. The telescopic sight is in very good condition and retains about 70% of the black enamel finish. The optics are cloudy. The case is in good overall condition.

Desirable Springfield Model 1903 Hoffer-Thompson Conversion Bolt Action Rifle

Lot # 1867 (Sale Order: 868 of 952)

Desirable Springfield Model 1903 Hoffer-Thompson Conversion Bolt Action Rifle

Springfield Armory manufactured approximately 15,000 Model 1903 rifles using the Hoffer-Thompson conversion system as Gallery Practice rifles between 1907 and 1918, with this rifle manufactured in 1912. These rifles used standard 1903 receivers with a special 22 caliber barrel with an enlarged chamber that used special steel chamber inserts to fire the 22LR cartridges. Additionally this rifle has had the firing pin modified to use the steel inserts. The receiver has the standard four line Springfield Armory markings over the serial number "106883". The barrel is marked "S A/flaming bomb/9-12" and it has the unmarked straight bolt handle and all-milled components. The stock is an early finger groove that has a boxed "CCV" cartouche on the left side with a circled "P" proof on the underside with a steel buttplate with an early no-clip handguard. This example does not have the copper-colored firing pin spring found on most Gallery Practice rifles.

Condition: Fine with 85% of an arsenal dipped blue finish over the original metal finish with flaking and scratching of the blue finish in various areas. The stock and handguard are both very fine with a nice dark original appearance with a clear cartouche and P proof. The front section of the handguard has been sanded/dished a long time ago and now matches the stock correctly. Mechanically fine. A scarce and desirable Model 1903 Gallery Practice rifle.

Z Prefix Remington Model 1903A4 Sniper Rifle with Lyman Alaskan Telescopic Sight

Manufactured by the Remington Arms Co. in 1943. The rifle has a blue Lyman Alaskan telescopic sight with the military serial number "A3758" roll-stamped on the tube, cross-hair reticle and military rubber eyepiece. Most telescopic sights found on Model 1903A4 rifles were fitted after the rifles were purchased from the DCM.

Condition: Very fine as arsenal refinished. The rifle retains more than 98% of the arsenal parkerized finish. The scope is excellent; the tube has 90% of the original commercial blue finish and the optics are clear. All of the markings on the rifle barrel, receiver and scope mount are sharp. The stock has been reoiled but remains excellent with a clear over haul inspection mark. This is an excellent example of a desirable Z-prefix Model 1903A4 Remington Sniper Rifle.
