U.S. General Motors/Guide Lamp Liberator Single Shot Pistol

Lot # 1882 (Sale Order: 883 of 952)

U.S. General Motors/Guide Lamp Liberator Single Shot Pistol

Manufactured by the Guide Lamp Division of General Motors from 1942-1945, the Liberator was issued the nomenclature "Flare Pistol, 45 Caliber" in order to obscure its true purpose to be airdropped in occupied territories and be used to eliminate a German soldier and steal his weapon. Given the smooth bore and crude sights, this was a task best performed from immediately behind while the soldier was alone. This is a two hole model that was made from sheet metal stamping that were spot welded together on top of the smooth bore barrel, and fitted with a cast zinc cocking knob with integral guide pin. The grip is hollow to store additional rounds, and fitted with a sliding cover.

Condition: Fine. The pistol has a smooth mottled gray/silver gray patina. The action functions well.

Magnificent Cased Factory Master Engraved (George Spring) Colt One-of-a-Kind Colt 1911 Government Mo

Lot # 1886 (Sale Order: 887 of 952)

Magnificent Cased Factory Master Engraved (George Spring) Colt One-of-a-Kind Colt 1911 Government Model Colt Collectors Association 1986 Auction Gun with Conversion Kit and Factory Letter

This magnificent Colt 1911 Government Model pistol was specially produced by the Colt Custom Shop as a "one of a kind" to be auctioned at the Colt Collector's Association Seventh Annual All Colt Gun Show fund raiser, which was held at the Marriott Hotel in Farmington, Ct. on October 4, 1986. The pistol is accompanied by a two page Colt factory letter describing the embellishments and later enhancements by the successful bidder. The pistol features Type "B" scroll engraving in "Henshaw" style on the forward lower receiver and trigger guard, "Nimschke" style on the left side of the slide, "Helfricht" style on both sides of the receiver and "Contemporary" style on the right side of the slide. The 150th Anniversary Rampant Colt logo is line cut engraved on the left side of the slide, the front strap is line cut engraved "Colt Engraving Sampler" in script style and the serial number "CCA1986" is engraved on the right side of the frame. The engraving was done by Colt Master Engraver George Spring. At the time of sale the pistol was fitted with smooth ivory grips with the left panel scrimshawed "R. Henshaw 1831, L. Nimschke 1850-1900, C. Helfricht 1871-1921, Contemporary". The pistol originally came with a walnut French fitted case designed to accommodate the pistol, a Colt 150th Anniversary Cloisonne medallion and an extra pair of grips, which is included with the pistol. The successful bidder (David Buehn) commissioned the Colt Custom Shop to enhance the piece by adding a .22 caliber nickel plated conversion unit with the slide engraved to match the pistol slide, engraving to be done in the four sample styles and done by Master Engraver George Spring, an additional pair of pearl grips carved on the right side with the Colt 150th Anniversary Logo and on the left side the initials "DLB" (these grips are presently on the pistol). There is also a pair of the diamond checkered walnut grips that were standard for the model. An additional presentation case was also requested with French fitted interior to accommodate the pistol, conversion unit, two extra pair of grips and two extra magazines (one 45 caliber, the other 22 caliber). The case was to be French fitted with a brass presentation plaque in the lid featuring the Anniversary 150th Logo in the center and engraved by Master Engraver George Spring with the four sampler styles at each corner. The pistol is currently in the additional custom case Mr. Buehn ordered with the extra wood and ivory grips, conversion unit, extra nickel 45 caliber magazine with lanyard ring on the bottom and nickel 22 caliber magazine. The addition embellishments were processed on Colt Repair Order Number 219661C/ Colt Custom Shop Order Number 2994-2. All of the aforementioned information is verified on the two page Colt Factory letter, including the serial number, caliber, 5 inch barrel and nickel finish. Also accompanying the pistol is a copy of the work order request for Mr. Buehn requesting the conversion unit with slide to be engraved by Master Engraver George Spring in the four sampler patterns to match the pistol, the walnut presentation case to hold the pistol, two extra magazines, two extra pair of grips, ( the pearl and wooden), gun to face to the right, extra nickel magazine with lanyard ring, French fitted plaque in the lid and the pearl grips with the 150th logo on the right side and the initials "DLB" on the right side. In addition to the two walnut presentation cases, the pistol comes with the original Colt box for the conversion unit with Custom Shop end label marked "Custom Engraved Conversion Unit Series '70, .22 Caliber, Nickel, for 1986 Colt Collectors Association Auction Gun" and a plain two piece cardboard box for each case.

Condition: Excellent. The pistol retains 99% plus of the original nickel finish with some speckled flaking on the right side of the slide and scattered "frosting" of the finish. The engraving remains crisp. The conversion slide is excellent with 99% plus original finish with some speckled flaking on the right side, a few light scratches and some "frosting" on the left side. The ivory and pearl grips are excellent with the ivory grips beginning to take on an attractive light aged patina, and the walnut grips are as new. Both cases are excellent with a few minor dings and handling marks on the exterior of the currently used case and the original case is in new condition. A rare opportunity to own this magnificent factory Master Engraved, one of a kind, full factory documented Colt 1911 Government Model pistol.

Lot # 1887 (Sale Order: 888 of 952)

Spectacular Exhibition Quality Engraved Documented Alvin A. White Signed Gold and Silver Inlaid Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Carved Ivory Grips Intended for Presentation to Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev

This exquisite masterpiece was embellished and relief gold inlaid by renowned Master Engraver Alvin A. White. The Colt factory letter confirms the caliber and barrel length with the stocks not listed and the finish as blue when originally sold to Jackson Arms of Dallas, Texas, and shipped to Alvin A. White as part of a two gun shipment on January 26, 1959. Alvin White's recessed silver cartouche ("A A WHITE/ENG.") appears on the right side of the front strap under the grip. The revolver features 65-70% coverage of White's distinctive deep intertwined foliate arabesque patterns as featured on the barrel, cylinder, ejector rod, hammer and grip straps. Gold wire inlaid borders adorn the frame, recoil shield, loading gate and hammer. A deep relief gold inlaid onion dome building resembling Saint Basil's Cathedral located on Red Square in Moscow is featured on the left recoil shield. A second deep relief gold inlaid onion dome Russian building is featured on top of the back strap and surrounded by a silver wire border. Down the length of the back strap is a gold wire scroll pattern incorporated in the foliate engraving and the butt has a silver wire border of onion dome shape which extends to the heel of the back strap. The trigger guard also has the gold wire inlaid scroll pattern incorporated in the foliate engraving and the Colt factory VP triangle proof and the letter "P" are stamped on the left side and the number "5" is stamped on the right side. Silver and gold wire inlaid scrollwork extends to the barrel which also has a silver band and onion shaped wire patterns at the muzzle. The same band and onion pattern is repeated on the breech of the barrel but the onion pattern is inlaid in gold. The ejector housing mimics the barrel with the same type of engraving and gold and silver wire inlay. The left side of the barrel has the one line model/caliber marking with the one line address marking on top. The left side of the frame has the two line, three patent date marking followed by a Rampant Colt. As stated, the cylinder is engraved including the flutes. A silver band is featured on the rear of the cylinder and a gold wire inlaid border with onion dome shapes following the lands and flutes. The revolver is fitted with two piece ivory grips. The right grip panel has a relief carved horse head and the inside of the panel has the last two digits of the serial number ("11") in pencil. The grip straps and cylinder are numbered to the gun. The revolver was once part of the Romaine Fielding Collection. Fielding was President of Romaine Fielding & Associates, Inc., an export company that did business in the Soviet Union. The revolver was originally part of a pair intended for presentation to Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev by Fielding in the 1960s. Fielding was never allowed to present the revolvers to the Soviet Premier. Khrushchev's personal security objected to the gift believing that the revolvers were booby-trapped or contained listening devices. The revolvers remained in the United States and later entered the collector's market. Along with the Colt factory letter are several copies of letters and newspaper articles regarding Fielding including letters from Vice President Richard Nixon and Senator J.W. Fulbright.

Condition: Near mint as embellished by renowned Master Engraver Alvin A. White. The revolver retains nearly all of the blue finish with only the slightest loss at the muzzle and a spot of light pitting on the left forward side of frame. There is a noticeable drag line on the cylinder. The grips are also near mint with an attractive color and grain pattern. A true work of art created by one of the most famous Master Engravers that would be the centerpiece to even the most advanced Colt Single Action Army Revolver collection!

Chicago, IL on February 1, 1961 as part a 50 gun shipment. The first of these revolvers were marketed by Centennial Arms. The revolver has standard Colt barrel and frame markings with an inscription on the back strap "TULSA/OKLAHOMA" and "DAVE FAULKNER/SHERIFF". The grip straps and smooth walnut grips are numbered to the gun. A letter addressed to Deputy Sheriff John Nelson of Tomay, California, from Sheriff Dave Faulkner dated 1979 confirms that the revolver was once carried by Faulkner and that the holster in this lot was handmade by one of Faulkner's deputies. The open top/open toe leather holster has deeply tooled stacked initials "DF" along the front. Research pertaining to Faulkner's career as a sheriff is also included with the gun. Retiring in 1982, Faulkner served as Tulsa County Sheriff for 23 years with a total of 44 years in law enforcement. During his tenure, Faulkner transformed the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office into the largest in the state of Oklahoma. He was held in high regard with one friend commenting, "As a politician [Faulkner] was perhaps the most popular figure to ever run for local office."

Condition: Excellent. The revolver retains 95% plus original blue finish showing some loss at the muzzle, some light high edge wear and cycling marks on the cylinder. A patch of minor pitting is present on the front strap. The frame retains 97% plus original case colors. The grips are very fine with some minor handling marks. The holster is excellent as homemade.
