Winchester Model 1886 Musket with Bayonet and Letters

Lot # 3025 (Sale Order: 26 of 929)

Extremely Rare Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Musket with Bayonet and George Madis and Factory Letters

The accompanying factory letter for this Model 1886 confirms the musket configuration and .45-70 caliber. It was received in the warehouse on September 19, 1893, and shipped with 22 other arms on September 20. The letter from noted Winchester expert and author George Madis states this Model 1886 musket "is all original" and "because of the fine condition, rarity and age, number 81878 merits a prominent place in any collection or museum." Experts estimate that total production of Model 1886 musket was just over 350 pieces. Model 1886 muskets are extremely rare; most of these muskets were apparently manufactured for export. Pinned blade front sight on a base that acts as a bayonet lug and adjustable "ski slope" rear sight on a barrel stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "45-70" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-," and the lower tang is marked with the serial number and two-line patent dates. Mounted on a smooth full length musket type stock with a sling swivel on the underside of the barrel band and buttstock, forend cap and trapdoor crescent buttplate. Comes with a five piece cleaning rod and a socket bayonet with leather scabbard.

Class: Antique

Fine. 50% thinned original blue finish remains on the barrel, forend cap and barrel band. 95% plus original blue remains on the bolt. 60% faded nitre blue remains on the loading gate. 50% original case colors remain on the frame, hammer and lever. Patterns of original case colors remain on the buttplate. The wood is very fine with some chipping and a hairline crack at the forend cap juncture, "W" lightly hand marked on the buttstock and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is fine with mostly a bright appearance, and the scabbard is very good with some loss material.

Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Musket

The factory letter lists this rifle in .38-55 W.C.F. with a #3 weight 30 inch part octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock, Dutch cheekpiece, no buttplate, no sights, and no rear sight seat when received and shipped on December 28, 1901. It was repaired and returned on February 25, 1902. It is fitted with an adjustable globe front sight, "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." on top of the barrel, mid-ranger Vernier peep sight mounted on the upper tang, an adjustable single set trigger, checkered Schnabel tip forearm, and fancy grade walnut buttstock with checkered wrist, hard rubber grip cap, prominent cheek rest, and a blued steel Swiss buttplate. Winchester Model 1885 Schuetzen Rifle with a Winchester A5 Scope

Lot # 3033 (Sale Order: 34 of 929)

Winchester Model 1885 Special Order High Wall Schuetzen Rifle with Factory Letter and a Winchester A5 Scope

The included factory letter confirms this rifle was originally in .25-20 (now rechambered to 28-30 and so marked) and had a #5 36 inch octagon barrel, Schuetzen set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Schuetzen cheek piece, Helm buttplate, blank in the rear sight, windgauge front sight, mid-range peep sight, and spur lever. It was received in the warehouse on September 12, 1905, and shipped the next day. The rifle remains mostly in the same configuration; however, the barrel is remarked "28-30" over the "25-20 SS" marking and has a non-windgauge globe front sight and has been equipped with a desirable Winchester A5 scope. The markings are mostly standard. The top of the receiver has the "WP" proof, but the barrel does not have the proof and has the serial number on the bottom punched with individual stamps and a three-leaf clover style stamp in addition to the usual factory markings at the breech (including "25-20 SS"). The stock and forearm are fancy grade walnut with style H checkering, a contrasting Schnabel tip insert, hard rubber grip cap, the large Schuetzen cheek piece and comb, and blued steel Helm buttplate.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine as rechambered with 70% faded blue finish overall, partially refinished and remarked caliber marked barrel, fading mostly at the buttplate and raised areas, traces of original case colors in the protected areas of the lever, smooth brown patina on the balance, and the usual minor marks and scratches. The wood is very fine and has attractive figure, crisp checkering, a few tiny chips on the corners at the junctions with the frame, mild scrapes and dings, and glossy varnish. The scope has a small dent on the top of the tube, strong original blue, good optics that could use a little cleaning, and distinct crosshairs. Mechanically excellent.

Accompanied by a letter from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives listing this carbine as being removed from the NFA (National Firearms Act) and classified as a curio and relic. This letter is addressed to noted Winchester expert and author George Madis. The 15 inch barrel has pinned blade and folding ladder sights and is stamped with two-line Winchester legend, two-line nickel steel marking and "30 W.C.F." on the left side. Winchester factory oval proofs are present, a saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver, and the upper tang has the three-line model/trade mark information. Mounted on a smooth carbine stock with sling eyelet on the underside.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Good. The barrel has some cold blue and tool marks on the barrel, otherwise the carbine retains a few patches of original blue finish in and around the protected areas with the balance a mottled brown-gray patina. There is some scattered pitting. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is very good with minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.

Documented Antique Special Order Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle with Scarce Extra Length Barrel and Factory Letter

This Winchester Model 1894 was manufactured in 1895 with the desirable 30 inch extra length barrel. Good, retains traces of original blue finish under the frame with the balance mostly a smooth grey patina speckled with some artificial brown throughout the entire length of barrel and magazine tube. The wood is fine with minor dings and scratches scattered throughout, a hairline crack in the wrist, and a generous amount of the varnish remaining. Mechanically excellent.
