Harrods Marked "Paradox" Shotgun with Case

Lot # 3599 (Sale Order: 598 of 929)

Engraved Harrods of London Retail Marked 12 Gauge "Paradox" Box Lock Side by Side Shotgun with Case

An included information card with the gun states it was manufactured by Bentley & Playfair and sold by Harrods in 1920. Harrods is the largest department store in Europe and the most famous in the world. Established in its current location in the Knightsbridge district in 1851, the store started with a single room and in the proceeding century and a half has grown to occupy 5 acres with 330 departments, covering an astounding 1.1 million square feet. It is so large in fact it has its own unique postal code. The principle of rifle chokes in shotgun barrels was developed by Col. George Vincent Fosbery of Webley-Fosbery revolver fame. The majority of the barrel length is smooth as in a traditional shotgun, with the last 2 1/2 inches of the barrels rifled with a special "ratchet" style rifling allowing a solid projectile to catch the rifling as it swages through the choke. Blue steel dovetail barrels marked "HARRODS LTD. BROMPTON ROAD. LONDON." on the raised breech end of the rib, beaded blade front and two folding leaf rear sights marked for 50 and 150 yards with platinum sighting lines, chambers measured at 2 3/4 inches, chokes marked "RCHOKE", London proofs (1887-1896) on the flats, and small importer mark on the underside of the rib. Casehardened box lock treble grip action, light border engraving, "HARRODS LTD." marking on the sides, dual triggers, and sliding automatic tang safety with silver inlaid "SAFE." Walnut straight grip checkered stock and splinter forearm with Anson push button latch, "B4" stamp on left side of buttstock, silver initial oval, and checkered horn buttplate. With leather bound takedown case with blank inscription plaque on the lid, Harrods label on the interior, two snap caps, and two piece wood cleaning rod. Bore and stock measurements are: proved at 12, bore diameter 9 inches from breech .736/.735; minimum wall thickness .034/.032: drop at comb 1 7/16 inches in line with barrel dimensions for "Paradox" guns; drop at heel 2 inches; length of pull 14 1/4 inches; weight 7 lbs 3 oz.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine with 85% reblued finish on the barrels, clear markings, scattered light spotting, some surface pitting, and small scratches and edge wear. The action has 50% original muted case colors and blued finish with a smooth gray patina on the balance, light surface spotting, numerous small scratches on the trigger plate and guard, and a mostly gray/brown patina on the tangs. The wood is also fine with well-defined checkering small dings and dents throughout, and some small chips on the buttplate.
