Four Japanese Tsuba, One with NTHK Certificate
Lot # 4206 (Sale Order: 207 of 1156)
1) Round iron tsuba with gold overlaid accents, 3" wide, with a sculpted scene of a bird in flight over flowers. Good, with some brass filler in the tang slot, a deep aged brown patina and some shallow pitting. With a NTHK certificate (green) and envelope. 2) Round iron tsuba with gold accents, 2 7/8" wide, featuring a sculpted fu dog and a broken column. Good, with a dark patina and tang filler. 3) Round iron tsuba with gold accents, 2 3/4" wide, with carved village scenes on each side and a signature in the center. As #2 in condition. 4) Four-lobed darkened brass tsuba, 2 /7/8" wide, with a set of six "triple hollyhock" mon badges on each side, a symbol heavily associated with the Tokugawa clan and the Edo-era Shogunate. Good, with bright wear on the edges.

Four Ornate Japanese Tsubas with Three Wooden Cases

1) Pierced iron tsuba featuring two dragons, beaded edge, and three Japanese characters. 2) Floral tsuba with small gilt punch dot accents and a plethora of Japanese characters on both sides. 3) Floral tsuba with relief carved gilt accents on a stippled background. 4) Tsuba featuring a gilt accented samurai and a mask-like stamp on the opposite side. "1" and "1" are in a hardwood case together, separated by cushions, while "3" and "4" have their own hardwood cases. All are generally good or better showing an attractively aged patina and retaining most of the gilt accents. The hardwood cases are all excellent with minimal wear.

37" OAL, 26" blade with straight hamon and standard furniture and saya. The tang is signed, with a 6-symbol signature on the left side, four on the right, along with some paint markings; the paint markings match a set of pencil markings on the wood of the grip under the fuchi. Good overall, with some spotting and wear on the blade.

Signed Japanese Tanto-Length Knife
Lot # 4209 (Sale Order: 210 of 1156)
19 1/2" OAL, 12 1/4" blade with wavy hamon, silver habaki, pierced-through round iron tsuba with leaf motifs and signature, gold accented village scenes on the fuchi and kashira, blackened mekugi, black lacquer saya with kogatana, and a blue cloth case. The kogatana has a chipped, signed blade with a loose handle decorated with a scene of chickens standing atop a drum. The tang has a single mekugi-ana, with two symbols engraved into the left side. Good overall, with some minor spotting and wear on the blade, and the saya showing mild cracking and wear.

18" OAL, 11" blade, wavy hamon, gilt/blackened habaki, scene of a man handling a horse on the fuchi, a single armor-themed menuki, ho-oh bird themed kashira, and a black lacquered saya with silver accented kogatana. The tang has two mekugi-ana, with an 8-figure signature on the left side. With a cloth case. The fittings are bit worn, and the blade shows one or two small nicks, otherwise good.

38" OAL, 26 3/4" blade with strong hamon (straight towards the tip, wavier further down, silver plated habaki, naval-style fittings and a black lacquered saya. The tang is paint marked "102", which is also stamped on a number of the fittings (minus the fuchi, which is stamped "201" in a possible die-setting error) and the wood of the grip, with a 12-figure signature engraved into the right side and 7 on the left. Very good, with minor spotting and wear, along with a few edge nicks.

Good, with minor spotting and wear. 2) Signed wakizashi length sword, 24 3/4" OAL, 18" blade, wavy hamon, iron tsuba with village motifs and signature, gold accented furniture and a black lacquer saya. The tang has two mekugi-ana, with a two symbol signature on the left side. Blade and saya are rough, the former polished and nicked, fittings good.

Japanese Shin Gunto Pattern Sword

38" OAL, 26 1/4" blade with wavy hamon, nickel finish habaki, shin gunto fittings and a green finished saya. The grip material has shifted, obscuring the mekugi and preventing disassembly. Mild spotting on the blade, well defined hamon, some cracks in the grip wood, and mild handling marks/staining overall.

Shin Gunto Pattern Japanese Sword with War Trophy Documentation

37 3/4" OAL, 26 1/4" blade with slightly wavy hamon, standard shin gunto furniture, and a blue/brown tassel. The hilt could not be removed for inspection. Included documentation, including an April 1945 dated capture certificate for "One (1) Japanese Samurai Sword" identify this as the war trophy of a Lieutenant Colonel Mathew J. Hall of the Army Air Corps, member of the 58th Fighter Group and Bronze Star winner. Undocumented consignor statements describe Hall as having taken the sword during the New Guinea Campaign.
