Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 2011 (Sale Order: 12 of 1288)

Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Based on the features and serial number of this carbine, it started out as a late third Model Carbine manufactured in 1870 and subsequently embellished in the Nimschke style along with facsimile Nimschke "LDN" signature on the underside of the frame. The engraving pattern is a copy of a distinctive Nimschke style, very similar to that example shown on page 84 of "The Winchester Book" by Madis. It has the standard 20 inch carbine length barrel with the standard Winchester two-line address and patent markings of "WINCHESTER'S' REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CT/ KING'S IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED MARCH 29, 1866, OCTOBER, 16 1860". Distinctive early style "trap door" crescent butt plate. It has the early style carbine leaf sight and the single sight blade on top of the front barrel band. The serial number is located on the lower tang mid way between the trigger and the main spring screw with the larger style numbering. The barrel, magazine tube, barrel bands and loading lever are blue, with the distinctive brass frame. It has a straight grained walnut forend and buttstock.

Lot # 2012 (Sale Order: 13 of 1288)

Scarce and Desirable John Ulrich Signed, Master Engraved, and Gold Plated Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

This beautiful Third Model was manufactured in 1870. The highly detailed inhabited scroll engraving incorporates a bald eagle's head on the right side near the back of the frame and a wolf's head on the left side plate as well as intricate geometric patterns. The engraving patterns are similar to examples pictured in the chapter "Signed Works of John Ulrich" in "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson, especially number 26484 on page 143 which has the same wolf head design. The left side of upper tang is signed "J.U." for John Ulrich, and the last four digits of the serial number are found in the upper tang mortise and inside the buttplate. In addition, the lower tang is marked "G" and "XXX ." The rifle features a combination globe and blade front sight, notch and folding ladder rear sight, tang peep sight, sling swivels (front absent), and a high grade deluxe walnut stock. Volcanic Repeating Arms Lever Action Navy Pistol

Lot # 2013 (Sale Order: 14 of 1288)

Desirable Volcanic Repeating Arms Lever Action Navy Pistol

This is a solid example of one of approximately 1,500 lever action Navy pistols with an eight inch barrel manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., circa 1856. The barrel is fitted with a brass post front sight with a fixed iron notch rear sight dovetailed to the top rear of the frame. The top of the barrel is marked "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB 14. 1854." The grips could not be removed, but "1701" is stamped on the lever.
