First Model Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 4012 (Sale Order: 13 of 1294)

Early Production First Model Henry Lever Action Rifle with Three Digit Serial Number

Early production Henry Rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in 1862. The rifle has the first pattern brass frame with rear sight dovetail and first pattern brass buttplate with rounded heel. The barrel is fitted with the standard folding adjustable rear sight in the alternate rear sight dovetail and nickel silver front sight. The loading lever has a spur to engage the latch on the lower tang. The rifle is not fitted with the extra cost sling swivel on the left side of the stock and sling loop on the left side of the barrel. The serial number of the rifle "526" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the frame, on the lower left side of the tang, in the upper tang inlet of the stock and on the inside of the buttplate. The buttplate screws and the lower tang screw are stamped with the full serial number. The two small tang screws are stamped with the partial serial number "26". The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." The Henry Rifle was the most advanced rifle manufactured during the Civil War. Experts believe that most Henry Rifles manufactured before April, 1865, were purchased by individual Federal soldiers who appreciated the Henry's fire power. Henry Rifles were especially popular with soldiers from Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky in the Federal Army of the Cumberland. This is a very attractive, early production original Civil War Henry Rifle.

Manufactured 1864. Matching serial numbers on the barrel, left side of the lower tang and stock inlet (buttplate could not be removed). Barrel is loose, although fits snug.
