Inscribed Engraved New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Carbine

Lot # 2006 (Sale Order: 7 of 1100)

Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Co. "Volcanic" Lever Action Carbine with Silver Plaque Inscribed to Major H. F. Beebe and Diary

Only an estimated 1,000 "Volcanic" carbines were manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1857-1860. They are important pieces in the evolution of Winchester firearms as the predecessors of the Henry rifle. Matching serial numbers are marked on the upper tang screws, left side of the lower tang, buttplate screws, heel of the stock twice, and heel tang of the buttplate. The right side of the butt has a silver patriotic escutcheon inscribed "Presented /By/J R Morris/To/Maj H F Beebe" over a masonic compass and rule. Further to the rear are crossed U.S. and Confederate national flags. Major Hinkley Francis Beebe (1831-1901) was an officer of the 38th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Includes a Willy Wallach "Diary for 1865" with Beebe's name and unit inside and a leather "wallet" of other documents mainly relating to Beebe, including his appointment as captain of the 38th Iowa Infantry on the 4th of November 1862 and promotion to major on the 8th of January 1864. An included Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States Commandery of the State of Missouri memoriam for Beebe indicates he was born in Columbus, New York, and married Minerva Case in 1852 and then moved to Waverly, Iowa, in 1856. He served as a first lieutenant in Company G of the 9th Iowa infantry in 1861 and resigned due to ill health in March of 1862 after the Battle of Pea Ridge. After his recovery, he became captain of Company B of the 28th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on November 4, 1862. At the beginning of 1865, the regiment was consolidated with the 34th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He is noted as "a brace and faithful officer" and as fighting at Sugar Creek, Pea Ridge, Vicksburg, Fort Morgan, Fort Blakeley, and Fort Fisher. After the war, he moved to Carthage, Missouri, and later Kansas City. He father and brother also served in the Iowa infantry during the Civil War.

Engraved New Haven Arms Company Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 2020 (Sale Order: 21 of 1100)

Engraved Civil War New Haven Arms Company Henry Lever Action Rifle

Manufactured in 1862. The receiver features a highly attractive custom engraving covering much of the brass surfaces. The engraving consists mostly of floral scrollwork on a punch dot background along with floral blossoms and checkerboard patterns. The scrollwork extends to the buttplate tang. The rifle has a blade front sight, a folding ladder rear sight with 900 yard center notch, and an empty sight dovetail on the receiver. The barrel flat has the two-line Henry's patent/New Haven address legend ahead of the rear sight. The serial number "826" is stamped on the barrel flat, the three tang screws, left side of the lower tang, stock inlet, the two buttplate screws, and buttplate. Although a limited number of Henry Rifles were purchased by the Federal government during the Civil War the majority of wartime New Haven Arms' Henry Rifles were privately purchased by individual soldiers. Most Henry Rifles were used in the Civil War and many of these rifles and the post war-production Henry Rifles subsequently saw hard use in the frontier west.
