Factory Engraved German Aydt Style Schuetzen Rifle

Rare Factory Engraved German Aydt Style Single Shot Schuetzen Rifle with Loading Accessories

This is a beautiful example of a factory engraved German Schuetzen rifle, as manufactured by W. Weisgerber in St. Wendel Germany. Engraved with a traditional German floral designs combined with the typical Schuetzen shooing panel scenes. The engraving covers the complete action to include the octagon portion , under side, the upper and lower tang area, front of the cocking lever and buttplate. The left side depicts a German schuetzen shooter with the traditional German beer maiden on the right side. The top of the action is engraved with a standing "Dragon /GREIF" marking. It has a 31 5/8 inch full octagon barrel that has the rare eight pattern fluted barrel design. This was usually only found on the highest quality schuetzen rifles and combined with the engraving indicates it is a very rare rifle. The top barrel flat has the standard roll marked matte finish design with the rear area engraved in an oval relief panel "W. WEISGERBER" "ST. Wendel". The underside is dated 7/25 and has the traditional "crown/B.U.G." proofs. Traditional German/Austrian Tyrolean style walnut buttstock with a German double prong buttplate and offhand forend. The buttstock is beautifully hand checked around the pistol grip and thumbrest. It comes with its original schuetzen tang rear sight that includes a rear sight adjustment key. The tang sight also as its large eye-disk and the barrel has a rare four position rotating front sight. Includes 50 unprimed casings, a set of 8.15X46R loading dies, a bullet mould and 25 bullets.

Two Desirable German Aydt Style Schuetzen Rifles, with Cases -A) PISTOR & Kost Aydt Style Schuetzen Rifle
Original 1910 era German offhand Schuetzen Rifle made by PISTOR & KOST of Schmalkalden, chambered in 8.15 x 46r. The firm of Piston's and Kost originated in 1745 in the German City of Schmalkalden, which was noted for its high quality hunting, military, and target firearms. The firm was liquidated in 1854 and eventually acquired by the Simon Brothers until 1927 when its doors were closed when the Hitler came to power. This is an original unaltered offhand rifle with German double set triggers with its original German Schuetzen rear sight with sight disk and pin head front sight. the barrel is marked "PISTOR & KOST SCHMALKALDEN" with "WHITTENER on the right and "GUSS STAHL on the left. Underside is marked with Prewar Crown/B., U., and G. proofs over the bore diameter, 6.18 (year made) over 628/WITTEN. It has a fine line engraving pattern on the receiver and barrel with rolled matte finish on top of the barrel, The 31 5/8 inch octagon barrel has a rebated chamber. Standard German walnut with Tyrolean pattern schuetzen stock, with double prong buttplate and forend. Comes with approximately 100 fire formed cases and several small bags of German stop-ring bullets.

B) HAENAL Original Aydt
Original Haenal Aydt Chambered in 8.15x46r. The top of the receiver is engraved and gold filled "HAENAL ORIGINAL AYDT" and has the 31 1/2 inch tapered blued barrel with a color case hardened action. It's missing its original breech block, however this lot includes an original Aydt replacement breech block that needs to be fitted. Fitted with a Swiss pattern Schuetzen buttstock and forend with the rear sight only (missing the front sight).

This display board is fitted with 27 desirable meerschaum pipes, many of which are very attractively relief carved featuring geometric patterns, a man's head, and floral themes. The pipes are retained on the board using rubber coated wire. The board measures 37 x 27 1/2 inches. One of the pipes has a break near the stem with the others fine or better with some showing signs of moderate use and generally mild wear. The frame and board are also fine with some mild handling/storage wear.

37" OAL, 25 1/2" shin gunto pattern hilt and saya. The tang has one mekugi-ana, with 3 blue paint figures on the right, a Seki Arsenal stamp and carved 4-symbol signature on the left. A consignor-supplied translation suggests "Atsumori Yamada" as the smith, but not record can be found for a smith by that name. Good overall with the blade unprofessionally polished.

The factory letter lists this revolver in .45 caliber with a 7 1/2 inch barrel, and nickel finish when part of a shipment of two guns of this type on June 1, 1882, sent to Schoverling, Daly & Gales in New York City. The revolver has "BROWNING BROS, OGDEN, U.T." indicating it was sold by the famous Browning shop. Underside of barrel stamped “P” and “RAC.” Action needs work.
