London Armoury Co. Kerr Percussion Revolver

London Armoury Co. Kerr Percussion Revolver Formerly in the Val Forgett Collection

This revolver is an approximately late 1864 or 1865 production and very near the end of the production for established Confederate revolvers, thought to be in the 3,000 to 10,000 serial range. The Kerr revolver was a high quality weapon that saw extensive service in the Confederacy. Marked "KERR'S PATENT 10026" on the right side of the frame, and the matching serial number is on the cylinder.

Good. The metal has been cleaned and exhibits scattered minor pitting. The metal and wood exhibit moderate overall wear. Mechanically fine.

Manufactured c. 1860s-1870s. Featured in the article "Why Kerrs?" by Valmor J. Forgett in the American Society of Arms Collector's bulletin and previously in his father's collection. In addition the the conversion serial number "783" on the frame and some other components, the revolver has the number 171 on several components.

Class: Antique

Good as period refinished possibly at the time it was converted to cartridge. The grips are very good with smoothing by the lock plate and a few minor dents and the checkering remains crisp. Front sight absent. The action needs adjustment.

T.W. Cofer Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun

"T.W. COFER NORFOLK" marked rib and "T.W. COFER" marked locks. Thomas Wrenn Cofer (1828-1885) of Portsmouth, Virginia, designed a revolver in 1861 produced by T.W. Cofer & Co. until the fall of Portsmouth in May 1863. Shotguns from his shop are also known to have been used by Confederates. He later ran a gun store on Union Street in Norfolk, Virginia, until his death in 1885.

Only approximately 2,000 Civil War era rifle-muskets were converted by the Meriden Manufacturing Co. circa 1865-1867 to the Miller patent breech loading system for use with .58 rimfire ammunition. "1864" dated lock, "EWR" inspection initials stamped on the left stock flat, period shortened barrel and stock.

Fine as shortened, with scattered freckling and a few small patches of light pitting. Stock is also fine with some light dents and scratches, defined edges and a crisp stamp. Mechanically fine.

1/2 Scale Model of a Civil War Era Billinghurst-Requa Volley Gun

Contemporary 1/2 Scale Model of a Civil War Era Billinghurst-Requa Volley Gun

The eighteen smoothbore barrels measure approximately .83 caliber, and ignition is performed with a hammer using a single percussion cap at the breech end. A reloadable 18-count magazine with fixed brass chambers measuring approximately .75 caliber/12 gauge for use with powder and ball is able to be pushed in for loading at the breech end. The original full sized Billinghurst-Requa volley gun had twenty-five barrels, but this example was made with eighteen barrels to fit scale requirements and keep a common bore diameter according to the included consignor note. Approximately 200 Model 1841 rifles were altered in late 1861 for U.S. service in General Butler's forces (another 100 altered for State of Massachusetts), "U.S./L.B.C./P" on breech, two faint cartouches, upper tang fitted with peep sight base.

These "PHILADELPHIA" rifle-muskets are believed to have been produced under a contract held by John Rice, and the few pieces completed may have been assembled by Alfred Jenks & Sons after Rice defaulted.
