Factory Engraved Colt Single Action Army Revolver
Lot # 2057 (Sale Order: 58 of 1235)
Factory letter states revolver was sold to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. of Chicago, Illinois and shipped to Soto Brothers with dealer locations in Pearce, Gleeson, Courtland and Wilcox, Arizona territory, on February 11, 1897 (Arizona became a state in 1912) with a 4 3/4 inch barrel in .45 caliber, nickel finish, relief carved ox head motif on grip, and factory engraving. Factory engraving consists of floral scrollwork along with fan patterns on recoil shield, loading gate, and back strap shoulder, zig-zag line and dot motif on rear of cylinder, top strap and ejector rod housing, and geometric line pattern on back strap and trigger guard. The right grip panel features a relief carved ox head. Matching serial numbers on frame, trigger guard, and back strap.

Very good as period replated, some softened engraving, replacement cylinder pin, and grips with hairline crack on left panel, couple small chips, and worn carving from spending a lifetime in the hand. Mechanically fine.
Engraved Silver Antique Colt Single Action Army with Carved Grip
Lot # 2058 (Sale Order: 59 of 1235)
The serial number dates to 1875. The revolver features later engraving, and the right grip features a carved longhorn steer with gold tipped horns, gold nose ring, and red inlaid eyes.

Very good as professionally embellished and updated with, light aged patina, distinct engraving, fainter original markings, remarked serial numbers, age lines and patina on the grips, and generally fairly minor wear. Mechanically fine.
Frontier Issued Sharps 1874 Business Model Buffalo Rifle
Lot # 2059 (Sale Order: 60 of 1235)
Only a total of 700 "Business 40" rifles were reportedly manufactured between August 1876 and September 1880, with the .40-70 2 1/4 inch Sharps cartridge offered for this model until March 1878. "Old Reliable" and Sharps Bridgeport address on top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight, "BUSINESS 40" on top of the breech, "2 1/4" on the right of the breech with matching serial number on bottom of the barrel, and "54170" marked inside the replacement lock assembly.

Good as frontier issued, showing gray patina on the iron, a brighter appearance on the replacement lock, and scattered mild freckling and pitting. Re-oiled forearm is also good with general characteristic wear, scratches, dents, cracks and an absent section at the top left front. Replacement buttstock is very good with some light handling marks. Mechanically fine. This desirable Sharps Bridgeport Model 1874 Business Model heavy barrel buffalo rifle would make a fine addition to any western firearms collection!
Native American Style Winchester Model 1866 Carbine

Native American Style Sharps New Model 1863 Cartridge Conversion

Antique Black Powder Frame Colt Single action Army Revolver
Lot # 2062 (Sale Order: 63 of 1235)
The consignor stated: "This Colt 1876 Model was sold to the U.S. Cavalry in August 22, 1876, at the cost of $13.00. It was acquired on the Zuni Reservation in 1920. This gun had been captured some time in the 1880s." Matching numbers are faintly visible on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap.

New Mexico Related Framed Items & Alexander McSween Knife
Lot # 2063 (Sale Order: 64 of 1235)
This lot includes 11 framed displays mostly consisting of documents relating to the New Mexico Territory, including men involved in the Lincoln County War and Bill the Kid's escapades. One frames item is a Bowie knife with "Alexander McSween" on the left side of the 9 1/2" clip-point blade. The display also indicates the right side is marked New Mexico Territory. The silver-gilt hilt has a bone handle. Alexander McSween (1837-1878) was one of the partners of John Tunstall and faced of against James Dolan and Lawrence Murphy in 1878. He was killed during the days long Battle of Lincoln essentially ending the war.

The frames are generally good to very good and have some mounting hold and age and storage related wear, and their contents are generally in very good condition for their age. The knife is good with dark patina on the blade and mild wear.
Eight Framed Antique Portraits
Lot # 2064 (Sale Order: 65 of 1235)
1) Ryker case containing a portrait of an older woman labeled as an "Original silver print photograph portrait of Dulvina Maxwell taken in 1919..." and cased portrait of a young man labeled "Tin type photo...found in the papers of Eusavio Gonzales with the Billy the Kid letter. The photo is not Gonzales. We think it's the Kid What do you think?" The inside of the second portrait's case has three rows of letters that do not appear to spell names, possible sets of initials. 2) Framed portrait of a man within a wall frame with label reading "Barney Mason". Mason was a member of Pat Garrett's posse that tracked down Billy the Kid. 3) Small portrait of a woman within a display frame labeled "Maggie Brown Owner Browns Rooming House Turned Henry McCarty in to Sheriff Whitehall for stealing clothes Sept 23 1875". 4) Portrait of three well-dressed men with trim set in a display frame. 5) Portrait of a man set within a brass frame and in a display frame with a label reading "William Antrim. Billy the Kid step father Original tintype photo Earliest known photo." 6) Portrait of two men set within a frame with a label reading "William Black Owner of Silver City Stan Hotel Gave Billy dish washing job". 7) Portrait of a man with a case frame set within a display case with label reading "Dan Dedrick friend of Billy the Kid". 8) Framed portrait of a man with a printed copy of another photograph labeled "Fred Tecumseh Waite". Waite was one of Tunstall's cowboys and was one of the Regulators with Billy the Kid during the Lincoln County War.

Very good overall. Most of the portraits are nice and clear and have age and storage related wear. The display frames have cracks and holes from prior mounting, and the Dan Dedrick attributed photo's display frame glass is cracked.
John H. Tunstall Marked Inkwell and Related Documents
Lot # 2065 (Sale Order: 66 of 1235)
The inkwell has a 9 1/2 by 14 1/4" marble base, scroll and paw feet, lion, brass inkwell cover, glass well within, and a "JOHN H. TUNSTALL/LINCOLN COUNTY/N.M.T." marked plaque. It is accompanied by two framed printed portraits of John H. Tunstall (1853-1878), and four framed Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory, driver's receipts relating to Tunstall's business in 1881. By then Tunstall had been dead for a few years. Tunstall had been born and raised in England. His father had business interests in Canada, and Tunstall moved to British Columbia in 1872 and then to the New Mexico Territory in 1876 where he partnered with Alexander McSween and John Chisum and competed with the established businesses of James Dolan and Lawrence Murphy who were also allied with the local lawmen. The murder of Tunstall sparked the Lincoln County War. When he was shot down, one of his employees was William Bonney, soon to be known around the country as the outlaw Billy the Kid, and Bonney and others participated in the cycle of violence that followed.

Lawman Pat Garrett Monte Card
Lot # 2066 (Sale Order: 67 of 1235)
Per the included framed document signed by President Robert E. McNellis of the El Paso Saddlery Co., the #11 card in the accompanying frame was "once the property of Patrick Floyd Garrett, the famous Lawman who killed 'Billy the Kid' in Fort Sumner in July of 1881." McNellis indicates that he was friends with Garrett's son Jarvis and purchased from him a roll-top desk that had belonged to Pat Garrett which contained cards from "several decks of 'Mexican Monte' cards" which Jarvis indicated had belonged to his father. There were 102 cards total. He also notes that Jarvis was his best friend and was the vice president of El Paso Saddlery. McNellis also once sold Pat Garrett's Single Action Army through Arms Gazette on behalf of Jarvis Garrett in 1976. The framed display also displays the back of a card and a #4 card.

Cased James Dolan Inscribed Folding Knife
Lot # 2067 (Sale Order: 68 of 1235)
The knife features an approximately 5 1/2" blade and has dark horn scales and a silver plaque stamped "JAMES J. DOLAN" on the left. It is mounted within a wood display case using a wire loop at the blade and what appears to be hot glue on the scale. James J. Dolan (1848-1898) was one of the leading figures in the famous Lincoln County War during which he used both hired outlaws and allied lawmen to face off against his rivals. Famously, one of these men was the young Billy the Kid.

Colt First Generation Single Action Army Revolver

Manufactured in 1899. Matching numbers are visible on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. Per consignor, this revolver was in the collection of Jarvis Garrett and when he died, it passed to J.P. Garrett, famed Old West Lawman Pat Garrett's youngest grandson

Major General Lew Wallace's GAR Sword and Related Items
Lot # 2069 (Sale Order: 70 of 1235)
The sword has a 30" blade etched with "GRAND ARMY of the REPUBLIC" on the obverse and "Major General LEW WALLACE" on the reverse along with "WM READ/& SONS/BOSTON/MASS" on the reverse ricasso. The nickeled scabbard is included. Also in the lot is a copy of Wallace's book "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" published by Harper & Brothers, two volume autograph edition of "Lew Wallace: An Autobiography" (1906), framed portraits and signatures of Lew Wallace, and a print of a photograph of the "BEN HUR ROOM". Lew Wallace (1827-1905) was a Union general during the Civil War and later a politician and diplomat as well as the author of the bestselling novel "Ben-Hur" and remained the bestselling American book until "Gone with the Wind" in 1936.

"Stinking Springs" Relic Colt Single Action Army Revolver
Lot # 2070 (Sale Order: 71 of 1235)
This relic Colt Single Action Army is identified in the included provenance statement as discovered by Ralph Campo at Stinking Springs in the summer of 1910 when he was 9 years old. Campo indicates he was later told that given its location, it may have belonged to a member of Billy the Kid's gang. The revolver has no legible markings and remains loaded, but it is completely frozen up and inoperable. The revolver appears to have the dished ejector rod head introduced in 1882 and the "black powder frame" used until the mid-1890s placing the revolver's date of manufacture between those dates. In addition to the framed revolver and provenance statement from June 17, 1939, framed photographs of Jarvis Garrett at the site of the rock house at Stinking Springs and one of the rock house are included. Billy the Kid and some of the Regulators were found in the rock house by Pat Garrett and his posse on December 23, 1880. After a shoot-out, Billy the Kid and others were captured and outlaw Charles Bowdre lay dead.

Framed Items Relating to the New Mexican Territory
Lot # 2071 (Sale Order: 72 of 1235)
The stag handled hunting knife has a 5 3/4" blade and a black leather scabbard with German silver fittings, including a mouth piece inscribed "J.D./to/W.M.B". It is framed with a print of a portrait of Sheriff William Brady of Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory, and a statement reading: "Rare American Made Bowie by Hassam Bro.'s Boston. Presentation J.D. to W.M.B. J.D. was J.J. Dolan who with John Riley owned a big general store called 'The House' in Lincoln, New Mexico. The county seat of Lincoln county. W.M.B. was William M. Brady, who was the Sheriff of Lincoln county. On April 1, 1878, sheriff Brady was shot and killed by Billy the Kid. These men were all involved in the Lincoln county war." It is of note that Sheriff William Brady's middle initial is J. The consignor stated, "The Lincoln County War, in which William Brady played a prominent part, is a wild and exciting chapter in settlement of the West. What part this knife may have played will likely never be known but there is always the possibility that something may turn up in the future." The lot also contains an original period portrait identified as featuring Judge John Riley and his wife, a Lincoln County Stock Association receipt signed by James Dolan as the association's treasurer in 1887, a check signed by James J. Dolan in 1895, and an original photograph identified as "Jimmy Dolan/Last know[n] photo 1888".

New Mexico Related Documents, Map, and Photo

1) Framed map of the Beaubien and Miranda or Maxwell Grant in New Mexico and Colorado. 2) Framed El Capitan Land and Cattle Company $1,000 bond, 3) Framed United States Indian Service document from the Navajo Indian Agency on Nov. 14, 1879, signed by Galen Eastman relating to silver and drafts. 4) Framed Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory, document from Thomas Gardner certifying that on April 29, 1882, Morton R.F. Swope was arraigned on the charge of larceny and proven guilty in default of giving bonds of $500 and committed to jail. 5) Framed portrait of men and boys armed with various firearms listed as "John G. Gause (left) with 4th of July Hunting Party on His Ranch in New Mexico, c. 1890" by Frank W. Brady. Winchesters, a Colt Single Action Army, and a double barrel shotgun are among the weapons shown.

Large Selection of Walter Noble Burns Books & Related Documents
Lot # 2074 (Sale Order: 75 of 1235)
This lot contains a wide variety of items, many of which relate directly to author Walter Noble Burns (1866-1932). Among them are various photographs and documents, including a letter and envelope to Burns from lawman Pat Garrett's son Dudley Poe Garrett on June 15, 1926, in relation to the publication of "The Saga of Billy the Kid" by Burns. The following books are included by Burns: "The Sage of Billy the Kid", "A Year with a Whaler" (2 copies), "Tombstone" (2 different copies), The One-Way Ride", and "The Robin Hood of El Dorado". Also included are "Kit Carson Days" by Edwin Sabin with a presentation inscription inside indicating it was a Christmas present for Burns, "The True Story of the Death of Billy the Kid, Notorious New Mexico Outlaw" by John W. Poe marked for Burns in 1922, and "A Dictionary of Poetical Quotations from English and American Poets..." by Anna L. War (1883 copyright) with a decorative leather dust cover. The lot also includes a large framed display containing two W.H. Weed & Co. documents from 1883 regarding payments received from John W. Poe who was Pat Garrett's deputy and helped him track down and kill Billy the Kid and became sheriff following Garrett.
