Silver Mounted Bone Handle Bowie Knife

Lot # 2075 (Sale Order: 76 of 1235)

Silver Mounted Bone Handle Bowie Knife with "Toke from Dead Reb Glorieta March 1862" Inscribed on the Grip

The unmarked 8 1/2" blade has a clip point and appears to have had etched panels. The right side of the grip has a primitive inscription reading "TOKE FROM DEAD REB/GLORIETA, MARCH 1862". The cross guard and ferrule are silver, and the pommel has an inset silver half dollar (appears to be a Capped Bust c. 1807-1839). The Battle of Glorieta Pass (March 26-28, 1862) in Sante Fe County, New Mexico Territory, ended in a Union victory and is known as the "Gettysburg of the West" as it largely marked the end of Confederate control in the Southwest and forced the Confederate troops from Texas to retreat back to San Antonio.

Class: Other

Good with gray patina and mild oxidation on the blade, aged patina on the silver, cracks in the grip, and moderate wear.

Civil War U.S. Inspected New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle

Lot # 2077 (Sale Order: 78 of 1235)

Highly Desirable Civil War U.S. Martially Inspected 1863 Production New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Manufactured in 1863. Only around 14,000 Henrys were manufactured in 1860-1866. Many of these rifles were purchased and used by Union troops during the "War Between the States" such as this example. This rifle's serial number falls into the range of 3000-4000, 800 of which are known to have been shipped to the 1st D.C. Cavalry Regiment on 9 March 1864. Their historical significance as both Civil War rifles and important predecessors to the famous Winchester rifles has made "That damned Yankee rifle that can be loaded on Sunday and fired all week" one of the most valuable and sought after of all American firearms. The right side of the receiver bears an "HH" inspector stamp (Henry) and the right barrel flat is marked "C.G.C./H" (Charles G. Chapman/Henry). The matching serial number is marked on top of the barrel, left of the lower tang, in the stock inlet (faint), inside the buttplate, and on both buttplate screws. Includes a copy of a LeRoy Merz authentication letter.

Class: Antique

Very good, the iron showing mostly a grey-brown patina with a few noticeable patches of pitting and the brass showing an attractively aged patina. The refinished wood is also very good with some minor handling/vise marks and a very faint cartouche. Mechanically fine.

Provenance: The Collection of David L. DeLullo
