Collector's Lot of Mid 19th Century Cartographer's Exploration Instruments

1) An Exploration Size Pantograph. The instrument is within the original shaped and dovetailed mahogany case, (19.5" long with brass hooks). The brass instrument, used to trace and draw to varied proportion, is complete with anchor and tracing stylus and a set of four casters. The brass rails are engraved and graduated to proportions with adjustable clamps for the tracing stylus and pen. The exploration size pantograph is a smaller and more portable example of the more common full-size pantograph. 2) A Sharkskin Cased Drawing Instrument Set signed and dated "George Rutter, Jan 1st 1847" including two rulers, a proportional scale and a sector rule used for trigonometric calculations, a brass protractor, and drawing instruments including dividers, dotting pen and various stylus attachments.

Both are fine with brass components showing attractively aged patina, some light handling wear, and the cases showing some minor handling/storage wear.

Wall clock manufactured by Seth Thomas Clock Co. with label in the pendulum hollow. The face of the clock features the Remington aiming cowboy advertising in the upper center with "REMINGTON AMMUNITION" below that. The lower center of the face is marked for the J.C. Weakley Guns, Pistols, & Ammunition shop in Early, Texas. Includes the pendulum and winding key. The consignor states the clock functions when hung and wound properly.

Very good, the face showing nice color and distinct image with some slight fading and yellowing and there is some scattered light handling marks on the wood. Mechanically untested.

Manufactured by O.D. Jennings and Company of Chicago. The machine measures approximately 26" tall, is mounted on an approximately 15" x 15" wood base, and weighs approximately 90 Lbs. The cast components are finished in red, blue and yellow. Escalator style coin feed with the last 4 coins visible on the escalator, nickel plated handle and hardwood sides. The machine has 4 dimes visible and comes with the key.

Cased Troughton & Simms of London Surveyor's Level, Two Cased Balance Scales Sets and Accessories

Manufactured c. second half of the 19th century, this is a very attractive example of a surveyor's level from one of Britain best-known firms, Troughton & Simms. The tube is approximately 20" long and is fitted with a large spirit level and large compass on top, both of which are functional. Also includes an adjustable pintle mount and hardwood travel case. Also included with the lot are two small cased balance scale sets, one with interior label for Vandome, Titpords & Pawson of London, as well as some additional weights, some in a case.

Class: Other

Surveyor's level is very good with attractively aged brass and some light handling evidence/tarnish. Optics are cloudy but function, and the other components appear to functions. Scales and weights are good or better with attractively aged appearance and some mild wear. Cases are all generally good or better.

W. & L.E. Gurley Surveyor's Transit with Case and Tripod and a Thacher's Calculating Instrument

Brass and aluminum construction overall with a height of 14 inches and a scope length of 11 1/4 inches with dual on-board focus adjustments, three spirit levels, four inch compass plane with lockout screw and dual fine readout windows, full adjustment/lockout capacity and a hand-leveled swivel base. With a Gurley case numbered to match the transit, detachable sunshade, small maintenance tools and a wood and brass tripod (not currently compatible with the transit.

Class: Other

Transit is very good, with most of the original finish, some scattered light handling marks, and functioning optics. Mechanically appears to function as it should. Thacher's instrument is very fine with minimal handling evidence and slight yellowing. Cases for both are fine. Tripod is fine.

Factory letter states serial number was applied on November 17, 1898 and the rifle was received in the warehouse on January 6, 1899 and shipped on April 5, 1899 with an octagon barrel in .32-40 caliber and plain trigger.
