Civil War Era New Haven Arms Company Henry Lever Action Rifle

Manufactured in 1864. Approximately 14,000 Henry's were manufactured between 1860-1866, and half of them are believed to have been used by Union soldiers, mostly purchased by the men themselves, some using reenlistment bonuses. "That damned Yankee rifle that can be loaded on Sunday and fired all week" was one of the most advanced firearms of the war. Fitted with a German silver blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight. The top flat of the barrel has the two-line Henry's patent and New Haven address. Serial number "4797" stamped on the left side of the lower tang, top of the barrel, inside the buttstock channel (faint), inside the buttplate, and both buttplate screws.

Very good, the iron showing mostly an untouched smooth brown patina with crisp original markings and some scattered patches of light surface pitting. Attractively aged brass with some scattered repetitive dings on the top and bottom edged of both sideplates and elevator. The wood is good with hairline wrist crack on both sides, mild wear, and scattered dings, dents, and minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.

Manufactured in 1883, the first year of production. Chambers measured 2 3/4" with extractor, chokes measured improved modified/full, and 14 1/4" LOP.

Good overall with original finish turned brown/gray patina, moderate scattered spotting and pitting, a dent in the left barrel, and moderate handling evidence. Wood shows scratches, dings, cracks at either side of the toe, some chipping in the forend, handling marks, and well-defined. Mechanically very good.
